It's super over the top lighting... which results in massive over-shiny objects.
Have you ever tried staring into the sun?
Well, bloom lets you get that effect off of every reflective surface in the game.

Bloom is that stupid lighting effect that the 360 was so proud of... and made several of its games pretty much hideous to look at.

...Like Shepard's face whenever they had a chat with Kaiden?
I certainly hope there's a way to even it out.

In the first game you could disable it via BioEngine.ini, in ME2 they don't have any options.
Game is almost unplayable with it.

Just go to options, then choose the brightness screen and tone it down.
Brightness = / = Bloom.

Yeah, unfortunately turning down brightness doesn't stop the bloom.
It's still there, shining away... just looks more... dull... while everything else is downright dark.

Um...how are you playing mass effect 2 a bit under a week before release?
I'm not.

Mom & pop stores usually put out games as soon as the stock's in. Even if they're not supposed to.
And I know the local EB Games has had it since last week, cause I was watching the clerk playing it in the backroom.
I could have gotten my copy already... but I have enough stuff I'm still playing, so I can wait.

I assume you aren't referring to lens flare though, which casts a sort of glare across the screen. That I mostly enjoyed. It is much like Star Trek with the lens flare thing. Pretty cool IMO.

Anyway, how do you know that the .ini files are gone?

It can look good. The issue is, it looks good in moderation, but it seems rarely used in moderation. Whenever a game uses it, it seems to pump it into all the metal or objects that are near a light so that far too much in the scene has the bloom effect.
If I am in some cave and there is some hole in the ceiling letting light in to shine on a shield, sure give me some bloom. But If I walk into the Presidium and the leaves of trees are bloom lit...
No. Trees leaves don't blind me in real life. They shouldn't be blooming with bright reflecting glow light.

I never had problems with the bloom in ME1. In fact, I never even noticed it. UT3 bloom on max settings is pretty bad, I'll agree, but ME1? Please...
ME1 bloom was less intense, and you can turn it off via BioEgine.ini
Mass Effect 2 doesn't have a config ini, no joke. Basically no way to turn off bloom or that ugly DoF. Strong consolization here.
