Hi BioWare Community, I played and loved the first Mass Effect, and was really excited about Mass Effect 2 up until I noticed the increase in mature content in the game. As someone with a fairly conservative family and a baby in the house, I was wondering if, like the first game, all of the Romance sub-plots are optional, and if the game had some way to censor swear words or violence, much like Brutal Legend and Gears of War 2.

Hi, welcome :)

Yes, all the romances are optional, though I'm not 100% sure if you will be able to censor any swear words.

You guys don't have cable, right?

Because from what I've seen of ME2 so far... it's not really any more "offensive" than any late night cable show.

A swearing filter would be logical, but difficult maybe. For your sake, I hope it is there.

Though you could just keep your personal gaming comp password protected, and use headphones.

You probably shouldn't be purchasing an M game if you're trying to avoid M content. Think of your baby!

Also; why would they force a romance sub-plot on the player? They haven't before.

Last I checked, a drop of the F is still censored on cable, and if, for some reason it isn't, I don't really watch it.

You must've never watched Dexter.

Admittedly, I watch mostly Space, Teletoon, and Discovery... but when I do catch the odd other show, I have noticed some swearing. Not tons... usually... but it depends on what's on. Movies after 10, swear like mad.

I'm not so sure if there is a "bleep" option. Guess you may have to mute when SuZe comes on.

Guess I haven't then, but that's not really what I'm asking.

Yes, romance is optional, and for the record, it isn't graphic. Like...at all.
No, there is no swearing filter. As I and someone else recommended...headphones.

If you've got kids, put a password on your computer.

I'd leave SuZe on the ship most of the time if I were you. That might bring the level of vulgar language down under that of a sailor's shore leave party, and yes the romances are optional (this is again assuming you leave SuZe on the ship apparently).

Ha, Shepard gets raped by a girl.

Am I a bad person for finding that funny?

(Yes i know she doesn't actually rape him. it just looks like it.)

That's the point. A baby hears something, they try and say it. I don't want my one and a half year old nephew telling his mother what the TV said.

it is pretty well known that language use around an infant will come around and bite you in the ***, when said infant DOES begin talking.  Flip side of that is scientific proof that an infant raised in a multi-lingual environment will likely be multi-lingual.

Then don't play the game when there may be children around.

I feel you, the first game was a very tame M, especially if you avoided the romance plots, but for the sake of reducing it as much as you can, it should be possible to not do the subject zero mission, cutting out a lot of the swearing, and I have a feeling that the amount of swearing in the promotional materials isn't quite representative of the game as a whole. I may be wrong about that, but I would guess that since they are trying to go with an edgy marketing gimmick they are using the most edgy parts for promotion

look, i get your a concerned parent sage and that is a very good thing. i wish more parents were as active as you are. but really, get some headphones or earphones (leave on earphone out so you can still listen to the baby) and work from there. it isn't an ideal situation but neither is bringing an adult game into a home with any young child. i'm not saying it's wrong, it's just not the ideal situation.

My 15-month old swears like a sailor. There are only so many one-syllable sounds you can make and the ones which get the best reaction are always top of the list.

There seems to be a lot of swearing based on the live feed last night. A lot.

I would find it hilarious if my baby's ( if I had one) first word was F***, but I can understand why some wouldn't.

i was actually over at a friend's house the other night (knew this guy since grade school) and his marriage isn't exactly a picture perfect. he also plays a lot of 360 and violent games.

the kid is four now and his list of vocabularly is pretty extensive but includes: "dink, a**hole, f*ck" and an interesting combination of "f*ck me in the a**hole"

while humorous to a third person party it's not exactly inspiring to a young parent. is his a broken home? no, far from it. it's just another thing to work your way through.
