I have not played the original Mass Effect, although I plan to download it off of Steam as soon as I upgrade my failing and outdated graphics card. In any case, I'm rather curious how "secure" doors and consoles are in this universe. I have this worried, niggling feeling that if I don't have a tech class / person on hand at all times, that I will find myself severely impeded (or at the very least, frustrated) by being locked out of everything.

Is this really the case, or is this just my outdated fears from playing a tech-inept "Soldier" in KOTOR?

Nothing plot critical is locked but you would I think hate a low level run without a tech in the party. There are 3 different NPCs that can allow access for you. Your character doesn't have to have the skill, so a soldier is fine as long as a companion has the skills. Also on some worlds you can use this same feature to allow your character to have kick butt armor and pop your companion in armor to keep you safe® from environment.

If you want to unlock everything, you'll have to make sure you spend all of Kaiden's skill points on the unlocking skill or you will miss some stuff in the beginning.

I start with Kaidan and dump all points into unlocking skills. I keep him and ash until I get garrus. Then from that point on my party is Soldier Shep, ashley, and garrus. I like the ridiculous firepower punch that gives you. I first dump all of garrus' points into electronics and decryption (the 2 unlocking skills). Once I hit their max point, I will give garrus some sniper training. That way I can do all the sidequests and get all the loot and still have a ridiculous firepower punch.
