have you considered drawing the fight to you instead of taking the fight to them? pick the ground you want to defend. or walk into an ambush. the choice is yours

And replies that are a bunch of MMO style jerks.

The flash game had better combat. At least melee didn't suck.

In this game, by the time you close the distance as melee you are utterly raped, CCed, snared, stunnned, etc. Even with Indomitable going. Its totally BS. And if you run indomitable, threaten, etc. good bye stamina.

Or you can play a mage and just enjoy ez-mode.

There's a serious problem when range is 100 times better than melee.

Change your tactics then. Quite simple really. Sounds as if you are charging around like a bull in a china shop which is a surefire way of getting a beating.

Many of the replies are clearly from old school RPG players.

So, cambios, what difficulty are you playing on?

There's this button. It switches your weapon set. Use it.

PS: Mages have always been the most powerful class. They have magic, duh.

You probably need to use more consumables and get a healer mage on your team.

It sounds to me like the AI is challenging. :)

The game is supposed to present a challenge. Even many of us whose primary job was playing the game still had to consider each random encounter carefully, and yeah, sometimes we died. Sometimes we died horribly. In every single instance though, perseverance ended up paying off. Slow down. Pause and play, choose each action carefully. Focus fire (press + to select the whole party) on the enemy who is the biggest threat to you, or the easiest to kill and get out of the way. Use your poultices and spells liberally.

The game is not easy, but rest assured that you are in good company in terms of people who have died over and over on a seemingly inconsequential encounter. Once it all clicks for you I think you will appreciate that the combat in the game takes actual strategy and full use of your party into account. Feel free to send any specific questions you might have to me in a PM, and I will do my best to lend a hand.

When your fighter gets stunned, use dispel magic. Use grease to gve your enemy movement penalty(but keep your hands away from that nasty fireball spell :P). Have your rouge in your party scout ahead before you encounter enemies, so you can plan your actions. Let him reviel himself; luring those melee'ers after him, so you can finish them off.

Etc etc etc

Besides, you have your own stun-abilities. And mage is not easy-mode; only different

I dunno where you're running into trouble, my dual wield warrior is a one man bloodbath so far.

Yeah I see no problem melee>range. Range characters just suck imo. Also tactics are a little lackluster, melee rush from the enemy, archers shoot me. My counter, rush Morrigan into melee, mind blast, the cone of cold, warrior kills one rogue kills another, tank draws aggro. Then the rogue rushes the ranged guys, the warriors finish up the melee, and then join the rogue, battle over (again and again and again).

what kind of combat system do you prefere? any particular games? I'm guessing they may be completely different to DAO combat.
Just because you're struggling with it doesn't mean it's rubbish, it's just hard. Although some reviews have said the opposite and that the combat is not very challenging (at least one review did)

btw, you kinda sound like one of those MMO-ers yourself

Play the game on Easy, or maybe Normal if you don't like thinking through your fights or dying a few times to some new encounters. Sometimes you need everyone on a tough guy, other times you need to try to single Tank and/or CC/Debuff that one guy while everyone else burns down his goons. You need to chug potions in combat if you don't have a healer. You need to stay on your toes, if you're playing Hard mode anyway.

Also, it may come as a surprise, but sometimes terrain can play a big role in a fight. You can create choke points in some places and thats just great IMO. Other times there might be an intractable object in the area that isn't apparent the first time you enter the fight, use them. Oh and another reason to at least be aware of what you're fighting is that you don't always need to be running certain toggles every fight. This game isn't kind to people who don't make an attempt to be efficient with their Stam/Mana

Also, balanced party FTW. Right now I have S&B Tank, 2H Melee, Archer-Bard, and CC-Mage, I like it, though i'm considering grabbing a "Cleric".

Anyway, my Main is a 2H Warrior, and I don't feel gimp at all. Knockdowns and big crits FTW!

the MMO feel pretty much makes the game. I can see this game going MMORPG in the future.

Then let the AI control your melee and you can switch over to a mage in your party and have this ezmode you speak of. Problem solved!

Yeah, this game definitely requires planning ahead of time. Often I'll use a rogue to scout just to get a feel for what I'm up against. Then I'll pull with a bow to see if I can get just a few off the main group. Kill the guys you pull, rinse, repeat.

Halls and corridors also help a ton due to line of sight. Archers can't shoot what they can't see, so you use corners to your advantage to close the distance -- don't run to them.

Plays like an MMO? I must be playing this game completely differently from you guys, as it doesn't play like any MMO I've ever tried out.

On the other hand, I do sit back and force the melee enemies to come to my party. The archers are usually easy to take out if separated from their melee companions. I also zoom out all the way and micromanage my party. Regardless, My melee character and Alistair together make a pretty good team, as he has commented on a couple of occasions. Hehe.

Dear god.

Edit: I play WoW, which is about as MMO EZmode as you get. DAO is nothing like it, have you actually ever played any MMOs or sRPGs before or are you just talking out of your ass?

I can't help but notice the OP has several different threads complaining about different aspects of the game. Some people just like to whine.

Gee. Maybe because I want to play melee without being CCed 100 times while I walk 20 feet?
