Seems they just wanted to keep the box art similar.

Just seems lazy. Cerberus is a criminal organization at best.

Lazy? It's a completely different suit of armor that just happens to have an N7 logo on it. Don't be absurd.

Either hes not in the Alliance anymore or he shouldn't be sexing up every subordinate he can get his hands on.
What self respecting officer does that?
He did it in ME1 when he was firmly in the S. Alliance.

good to see some people still pay attention.
unfortunatly though, they went rouge, and are no longer affiliated with the systems alliance.
A+ for remebering that bit of information though.
as for the OP:
shepard still considers himself a marine and pland on rejoining the force after this mission is complete?

My Shep isn't in the Alliance any more. He's a Spectre. Also, the Systems Alliance never gave me a fish tank. Screw those guys.

Because now he is a comicbookish character, participating in the BioWare "I don't give a sh*t what's there beyond Omega-4 Relay" fashion contest. Well, being a character from ME1, Shepard contests under the motto "BUT I GIVE A SH*T!!!"

From the wikia:
'N7[/b]' is a vocational code in the Systems Alliance military. The 'N' designates special forces, the 7 refers to the highest level of proficiency. It applies to marines who have graduated from an elite training programme. Both David Anderson and Commander Shepard are classified as N7; Anderson was one of the first graduates.
If Shepard is equipped with any weight of Onyx Armor, the distinctive N7 and red detail on the right arm will be emblazoned on it. According to The Art of Mass Effect, the red detail symbolises the human blood Shepard must sacrifice to stop Saren. The red stripe is also a historical reference to the red stripes commanders wore on early space missions to make them instantly recognisable.
