Well here is what we know about squad outfits so far:

For a matter of fact:

-We don't get to choose what their armor looks like.

-We do get to choose between various altnerative outfits.

-We have seen there is breather gear for our squadies on planets w/ unbreathable atmospheres from a video.

Based off that, there could be:

-No real differences, some differences, huge differences or a mix of all three when it comes to squad outfits. So far we have possibly seen one alt version of both Miranda and Samara outfits. Both of them look like retextures.

-Based off the breather thingy Miranda had on a planet, there could be enviromental suits for hazardous planets (if we visit any in ME2) as well.

-Some of our squadies might have different defense types like NPCs do. For example Miranda might only have Health/Shields, Jacob Health/Barrier, Grunt Health/Armor/possibly Shields etc.

Lore wise the lack of armor can be explained away because:

-Most if not all the less armored squad members are agents, techies or biotics. That means they have other means of protection and some aren't trained to equip or handle more advanced combat suits.

-Working with Cerberus you have access to the most technologically advanced equipment in the known galaxy two years after ME1. Everything seems to be a lot more tech-based rather than physically based. It looks to me like the galaxy in ME2 is moving away from highly armored soldiers to more maneuverable tech/biotic based defenses.

The only thing that can't be explained away is how non-armored squad members hold out against melee combat, explosions and other hazards. If they can hold up just as well as squad members in armor, it might not make sense from an ME1 lore standpoint.

Yeah, pretty stupid decision for us not to be able to give our squad-mates better amor. I guess the COD/Halo kids couldn't comprehend such a simple game mechanic.

I really don't mind it. Armor often made some squad members look goofy, like they didnt belong in it. Aka Liara.

If the game's a big hit, you can bet they make the connection that it was the move towards being more of a shooter that "did it".

So ME3 will be even more dumbed down.

Kind of funny the argument that because we can't change armor visuals on NPCs, ME2 isn't a true RPG. That would disqualify most FF games as being RPGs and pretty much all RPGs and action RPGs of the 90s. The fact is the squad armor issue if anything is a cosmetic issue and a slight lore issue which can be indefinately argued either way.

It has nothing to do with FPS games, Halo kids and all the other idiotic labels people keep giving to others who aren't upset about fixed squad outfits. Also the so called "kiddies" and FPS lovers on this topic seem to have a much larger grasp on RPGs, their history and actual origins.

This. And Miranda's high heels. They are sexy for casual, they are stupid for combat.
Why does Shepard carry one thing for casual (and can change it), and another for combat?
Why is Miranda dressed the same  all the time (and she doesn't vary her outfit randomly as such a rich girl would want to, but it's not the point of this discussion).
Why in ME1 Ashley and Kaiden took off their armor aboard the ship, just like Shepard, and there is no such thing for Jacob and Miranda in ME2? Let them have just one set of armor for missions, but it must be a genuine armor, not a jumpsuit with an awkward far-fetched explanation, attached to it like a price tag.

Why this stupidity? I'm actually not complaining about the lack of opportunity to customise their armor. I say that they just don't have any armor to customize or not to customize it. And therefore the whole Mass Effect universe, that was quite coherent in the first game, starts ruining like the freakin Port'o'Prince.

And an outright fail, because by that time every game will be a shooter.

Could someone show me the video of the breathing mask for the other players? I'm very interested!

Oh god please no. It will be like DOW2 and the RTS genre.

ITS REAL TIME STRATEGY! :D but without the strategy D:

Oh please god no. Dragon age was immensly popular because it started going back to the old school style of RPG massive world, tons of stuff. Just huge. Of course it didn't go all the way' But it was popular because it was edging back to the way things used to be.

They decided, in their rush to make the game more generic and "welcoming" to shooter fans, that the codex and the lore didn't matter, if they stood in the way of being more derivative. The one common theme I'm seeing, everywhere in ME2, is the loss of integrity on part of the ME2 team compared to the original team. I know they overlap, but something is missing. It doesn't feel like an organic continuation of the story begun in ME1.

About the complainers:
It's the ME1 complainers who made BioWare ditch the elevators.
It's the ME1 complainers who made BioWare ditch the variety of weapon manufacturers.
It's the ME1 complainers who made BioWare ditch skillbased lockpicking.
And it's the complainers (or so Casey Hudson wants us to believe) who made them ditch squadmatesl armor.

If that was true they would have also ditched the mandatory mini-games and use the zots elsewhere. Well they kinda dithed em, we have all new ones I hear, oh joy!

Also I don't think I ever saw anyone complain about equipping armor on squaddies so how can anyone say the complainers caused it? It kind of boggles the mind...

In fact the only time I think they were flustered to the point of change was when they had to poke EA in the DRM fiasco for ME1.

So, lemme get this clear: can we change the armor/weapon (not the look of it) for our companions or it somehow scales with their level?

Weapons can be changed.

There is no "armor", there are "outfits". They just make the squaddie look slightly different (black instead of white outfit for Miranda, etc.), nothing more.

Even for Shepard, the armor seems to affect only things like power cooldown or grant extra ammo etc. Nothing in there about "damage resistance".

You know, this is actually more immersive to me than going to a shop in a market and seeing that they have an enormous selection of high end armor and weaponry. Why should I buy it from some shop keeper running a booth, when I am a spectre and should have access to the best equipment out there by default. I don't really see shopping as part of the "spectre experience."

I like the idea that I focus on outfitting myself with completely unique armor and weaponry, that really IS top of the line, and customized to my exact needs. Have you noticed that other armor wearing goons you encounter all seem to be wearing the old ME 1 styles of armor albeit with new textures? That just cements this feeling.

This all applies to the squad members as well. Id like to think that they have access to all of these modifications, or have had access for longer than Shep.

This makes it even more of a roleplaying experience if anything. I do agree that I would like to see a little more armor in combat situations on some of my squad mates, at least on SuZe and Miranda, but overall I am very pleased with the new system.

But just a few. No more crates. It's outright dumbification too, because those games were high-end fun.

As I said, it's Casey Hudson who justified himself by referring to the customers' complaints at the Best Buy Q&A event.

There are upgrades for the squad defences to be researched in the lab. Although there won't be any visual representation of such defences, or anything that those upgades could apply to and how.

Honestly, to an extent I prefer the outfits.

Every character has their own unique look. Some of the best characters in ME1 were Tali/Garrus/Wrex who while you could get different armour for them they still had their own unique look. When it came to ash/kaiden/liara/shepard they were just bland all wearing the same armour practically.

That said, I would have really liked a psuedo-armour customization for party members where while not as traditional armour as Shepard you could still mix and match pieces that fit the characters style. It'd be more work for Bioware but I think it'd be really neat.

I'm more pissed off at their reasoning for removing armour for party members, which basically chocks down to "People didn't like having to equip them". Rather than streamline the inventory system they just removed it and separated everything either onto the Normandy or pre-mission screens, Kind of disappointing.

From screenshots posted all over the show it seems that shields/barriers scale with level the same way health does.

The fact is we don't know if Miranda's outfits are all casual w/ high heels or if she has more robust or combat like alternatives yet.  I agree that high heels are not exceptionally good for combat (let alone walking)...  but she is a biotic. :P

I think until the game comes out and people play it to receive all the different outfits, we won't actually know if we have better options.  It would have been cool to have unique social and combat outfits for each squad member though.  Full armor customization seems to lead to dull unifying looks to everyones armor as they try to make pieces available to all genders/races.

Maybe in ME3 they will have the resources, the technology to build better, cooler and more customizable armors.

Funnily enough, clogging up the forum and pissing off people unconcerned with the issue worked pretty well for the Tali perverts... Bioware is suspectible to spam.

So how 'bout giving us some plausibly dressed for combat squaddies in ME3, eh devs? No more bimbos in catsuits and chest baring frogs somehow being as durable as Shep in his heavy armor? I'm sure the console kiddies won't mind. You can give them an "auto upgrade" feature, like someone already suggested.

o.O I play it on console and I prefer micromanaging and would prefer they keep it more on the rpg side of things then the shooter side of things.

This is the argument against squad members, not against armor.
Indeed, what use can Shepard, a SPACE MARINE, have of the people who can't wear combat SPACE MARINE ARMOR. And this goes for most of the ME2 characters. They are cool, cute and badass, but they do not belong in SPACE WARFARE.
