in the pre-release a big deal was made out of that. It was showing their ~~~innovation that they had very intelligent, dishonorable dwarves, with american accents... instead of drunken honor-fixated dwarves

Bhelen for example, very different from what people have come to expect from dwarves

With bioware game, people always have the option of going "well, maybe the story was dumb and the level-design was bad and the combat was uninspired and it was technically unimpressive, but at least the characters were cool"

 

that mold's gotta break at some point, which might force them to care about the rest of the things more when they can't rely on character fandoms anymore 

 

maybe this could be that time? 

cullen is a dumb inclusion

cassandra is hot and all but I've never registered anything particularly interesting about her 

varric is neat but it's hard to see where they can go with him, exactly 

they'd better hope the unknowns impress.

i was thinking the exact same, pups.  i don't find any of the characters very interesting, except for varric, but i don't really care about varric.

I don't think any female character has jumped ahead to clear popularity yet.

In DA2 Merrill and Isabella were equal cayse they alienated players in different ways.
Similarly here, Cassandra having short hair and rougher facial features ... the mage being black and French, they will both alienate people.

Cullen is the clear and away favorite like Alistair was for DA1
