I'll try rush this and make it short as possible. My wild theory. Is that the Elven gods were powerful Elven blood mages as many have said . Arthalan was once an actual city sunk into the ground as a means to get rid of it because the Humans plus Fen'harel or whoever else panicked because of the spread of the red lyrium the elves had created and then the underground proto dwarves found and built over the ruins and made their ancient thaigs there and they found and then were corrupted by the Idol and started worshiping it, the idol of which I think was used/created by one of the corrupt elven gods to control the populace up on mainland thedas. I also think think the Fade is a prison as Eleni Zinovia (the creepy former future teller from tevinter turned to stone statue) said the ''prison is breached'' I think the fade is a lower security prison yard holding the demons while the Black city holds the Elven gods who were locked away by Flemeth who is also fen'harel who is also a dragon who can shape-shift  to protect the world from their corruption so you could say the golden city which was probably always black/sickened is basically a huge maximum security quarantine prison. I'm not going to try explain the spirits/Demons because i'm not sure what they could of been originally. Anyway these same Elven gods realized they could communicate with the Human magisters, then by using the call/red lyrium stuff brainwashed the humans into thinking glory awaited them inside the fade/prison and these red magisters as i'll call them used the spells and blood magic thought to them by the trapped corrupted elves to try breach the prison but obviously this backfired and possibly besides trying to free the trapped red lyrium elves , the elves purposely infected the magisters to get revenge on humanity for helping Fen'Harel for destroying their corrupt civilization. Later on Fen' harel realized these humans/Tevinters would probably end up becoming more and more like the elves they fought which they did and so fen'harel posed as a human woman called andraste , wouldn't surprise me seeing how flemeth can shapeshift into a humanoid form into that of a dragon,This form of Flemeth/Fen'Harel launched the crusade against tevinter so their power would be reduced drastically and so it would lead to the creation of the chantry a worldwide religion as to discourage anyone from ever trying to enter the prison/black city again and to contain magic. Tis short and full of possible holes but it's what i think is possible.

Looking forward to Batman: Black City

Like. Yes BioWare, I'm going to do it this way.

Also, while the theory is interesting, it contains so much craziness I have no doubt it's unlikely. Though "Fade being a prison"-part actually sounds very plausible.

Hence why it's a crazy theory . Although i'm still convinced myself the elves are behind the origins of the red lyrium and the taint.

Agreed, completely.  The part about the Fade being a prison actually makes some sense to me, but the rest was a pretty rambling wall of text that made little sense.  Perhaps we can focus our discussion on the Fade/prison part?  It seems like a good topic.

That is absolutely fine with me, if the OP is as well.

There is little doubt that if the Elven gods truly exist, that one set of them is locked in the black city. I personally think it's the Forgotten Ones. Because being the gods of pestilence and evil would certainly explain the Darkspawn.

Check here for more detailed thoughts.

OP was like watching "twitch plays Microsoft word" definitely. I usually love reading theories like this, but it was so damn disjointed I felt like I had been inflicted with dyslexia.

Its more of a call to use paragraphs and thought progression. Food for thought really.

On the other hand, the bit I understood was pretty interesting, it's a little wish of mine that eventually we'll get to delve a bit deeper into the various religions.

There was an indication that Eleni Zinovia could make a return, plus we get loads of references to statues in DA to think something like this is likely.

The quarantine idea seems like a good one if you looked at from the point of unstable Spirits/Demons.  What I mean is possession by a rage demon = crazy whereas possession by a spirit of faith = more approachable.  So you're saying the Demons/spirits on par with faith are in the fade and the Demons/Spirits on par with rage are in the Black City?

The problem then is which would you quarantine where.  Whoever doles out this allocation would be doing it on the basis of imprisoning a being simply for their nature, and therefore deciding which being has the opportunity to escape from this prison.

I like the Fen'Harel/Flemeth/Elven/Old Gods idea because they do have a connection, but little information.  We have only the little information of red lyrium from DA:2 to go on, so idk.
