(And of course isn't romancing anyone in ME2, either.)

I have this idea for my next run in which he flirts with Ash but has to leave her on Virmire (actually something of a morbid tradition of mine, oddly) and then doesn't commit to the idea of a relationship again until ME3 (usually I start something up in ME2; not this time).

I just don't want something supremely immersion-breaking like a random Liara or Kaidan photo because the game doesn't know what to do.

IIRC, the portrait isn't featured. Miranda just gives you a quick briefing, and then it's off to the Suicide Mission.

Leaving your LI to burn on Virmire is a good RP device for a Shepard whose main theme is to succeed at the mission at any cost, personal or otherwise. I did one playthrough where I "romanced" Kaiden and then left him to die on Virmire.

Good point, cap and gown: it really works nicely.

In the past though when I've slain Ash on Virmire after flirting with her a while my RP rationale has been that it has a heavy impact on him; I usually roll Sole Survivor and I'm rather helplessly enthused by the idea that Shepard has one of those "what am I, the Grim Reaper?" trust issues for a long time.

Frankly, I think that's really helped me to not hate the endings. Several of my Shepards died breathing a sigh of relief that no one else will.
