OP, this is whats been bothering me since DA2. Frankly, the only reason the Templar Rebellion is still active is because of the extremely convenient Red Lyrium and because Bioware REALLY wants a Templar enemy in Inquisition. But I can understand that.

*snip*

But again, this is all moot, since the existence of Red Lyrium.

And that's the whole problem with this convenient "Red Lyrium" mcguffin and the Templar rebellion overall. The way the Chantry set everything up according to lore makes this whole thing pretty unsupportable. I look forward to seeing how Bioware rewrites and twists things so that the Templar/Seeker order suddenly comes up with all the money and connections to get the lyrium, and get the dwarves to consider trading to the Templars directly now. And red lyrium at that, which was so rare that the only time we saw it was in some obscure part of the deep roads in the form of a small idol. We'll see how Bioware suddenly makes it that red lyrium is as common as blue lyrium.

Is Lambert out of his mother loving mind? Did he forget that the Chantry controls the lyrium that keeps his Templars sane? WTF is the Lord Seeker doing taking over the Templar Order anyways? They're supposed to be separate brances.

It's not as though there is another viable lyrium source... that... oh. Red lyrium... Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Hence why the Inquisitor and Inquisition return in order to return things to balance.  The Inquisitor has power over mages, templars, seekers, etc... in order to return the world to order as they see it should be.  Similar in some instances as to what Andraste herself did.

Have you ever seen rock crystal formations grow when given the right circumstance?  If not, you should.  It's neat, and my theory behind the bolded part of your statement.

1. Red lyrium is not a mcguffin.

2.One of the major theme of dragon age is about conflict due to change and revolution. It's not surprising when in cases of the want of great social change there are group who strongly appose it. The red lyrium adds a factor the chantry never considered. Added, we have yet to know who sides with who on the conflict. Remember that Gustard is pro templar.

Who the heck is Gustard?

Are you meaning Gaspard?  If so, we don't actually know that he is pro templar, he just wants to give the mages and templars in orlais something to kill besides each other.

Maybe he meant Custard?

I mean every one loves custard, even Gaspard probably wouldn't turn his nose up at it.

Are you sure that's not just fitting the food theme?

Gaspard appears to be anti-Chantry if anything; he opposes its attempts to influence Orlesian politics (ironic, given how the Orlesian Empire's founder also founded the Chantry and seemed to intend for their synchronization forever). If working with the templars could undermine the Chantry or, more importantly, somehow leave whoever wins this religious struggle indebted to Orlais, he'd do it.

I don't see him as anti chantry.  I see him as not liking the current inability of the chantry to reign in it templars and mages.  That doesn't particularly come from any dislike of the Chantry.

Gaspard is what he is, a devout player of the game.  If getting down on all fours and kissing Justinia's feet is the move he needs to make to benefit Orlais he will do so, if destroying the chantry with the templars is the best move for Orlais he will do it.  I don't think he lets something as trivial as his own  personal feelings about the Chantry play into it.

I still haven't read Asunder, but regarding the whole lyrium problem, Alistair once said he doubts if the mineral is really important for a templar. He said it was more a means of control than a necessary element for being a templar, since lyrium is addictive.

(It's like any government that controls its soldiers with drugs, for example)

But we know that lyrium is what enables templars to use magic and fight abominations. Holy Smite is a sort of "spell", for instance, that cannot be cast without lyrium, I suppose. It's no wonder it is a templar specialty, not available to just any warrior.

If the templars break the Chantry's control over them, they'll have to form new agreements with the dwarves anyway in order to get the dust. Otherwise, they'll become like Samson.

That has been corrected by the Devs.  Allistaire was wrong, or so high of lyrium use already he didn't remember.  Either way the devs have stated implicity and it was demonstrated in the comics that templars need lyrium.

Alistair: "What was that?!" *Has pushed himself up from the Throne and has drawn his sword.

For reference:

http://swooping-is-b...om/1286233.html

TUK: The Templar abilities, are they--despite the Chantry's protestations--a form of magic?

DG: ....Even if Templar magic was recognized as spellcasting, it's not innate to the Templars, if they just stopped taking lyrium eventually they would lose the ability. Although as Alistair proves, they can use the ability for a long time afterwards.
