Playing on normal (of all things) went and respec'd and distributed my stats 2:1 cunning:dex

My hit rate is 67%

Spec'd in bard. Got Aim/Rapid Fire. Already tried alternating between the 2 and it seems to be around the same. Am currently level 8 or 9 and I've just been to the circle of magi (with the other locations untouched)

Seriously, I think Alistair is out-damaging me at this point haha

What am I doing wrong?

Personally, I leave Cunning at 22 a majority of the time, and increase DEX, esp in Awakenings.

Oh? Wouldn't that mean I'd need to take the lock picking talents?

Might try getting Duelist first and using Bregan's bow early on. Have Wynne spam Heroic Offense during combat. If you can afford to bring another rogue, Leliana can offer a bit more attack after lvl10 with SoC. Later on, things get better with increased SoC, HO boni, +DEX and +attack bonus across equipments and so on so forth.

Pls do not feel that you must be restricted to some pre-set min/ max numbers. Most of my Rogues use Heavy armor at end game, utilizing Leliana's DLC armor early in the game as soon as I can get STR to 20. And a long time ago, folks were saying that such a STR build could not or should not be done.

If you wish to use a Cunning build, go for it, but patience might be required. Personally, I prefer DEX, and almost always take those Lock Picking talents, too.

It's completely normal for an archer do be doing crappy damage early on. The simple fact is that archers are not terribly well implemented and are weak, so you're not doing anything 'wrong'. Just stay as you are (perhaps lean towards putting more into Dex, actually) and you'll be turning a respectable damage output by the end of the game. Archers are just late bloomers.

One of the things I found really helped my archer was getting Ranger at level 7. The summoned wolf can Shred and Overwhelm from the start, and gets Overwhelm at least 5 levels ahead of Dog. It helped equalize things for my archer until his skills caught up.

Alright so I've gained a couple of levels and evened out my dex/cun (40/40) as I approach my second spec. Also got repeater gloves. I'm now hitting much more reliably than before.

As one of the above posters pointed out, it seems only ranger has any appealing benefits for my play style. But where do my stats go from here? Just max dex till the end/str for some armor variety?

Thank you everyone for the replies. Helped me out heaps.

"Archers are just late bloomers." This explains it best. By end game if you have the survival skills you can use Arrow of Slaying to do 400 damage. By end game Leliana does 400 max. She is still only 10-14% contributor. Alistair runs at about 20%. I pretty much use Leliana and Alistair as my main companions through out the game. My main character typically does over 50% of the kills.

Let your other rogue Leliana do this. or take the lockpicking. The Dex increases defense and attacks which improves your hit rate. In Awakening you pick up accuracy and now you are doing a max that is over 800 damage.

Personally, I like higher STR and WILL than most; prefer to wear heavy armor and have more fuel for Talents, but DEX and Cunning are still the priority scores.

And all my Rogues are Duelist/ Assassins; did not care for Ranger pets, or Bard being frozen to one location. I allowed Leliana to keep the latter.

But as mentioned earlier, this kind of build went against the idea that one only should improve two scores; that is balderdash. Have well over a score of playthroughs including mostly solo runs (kinda difficult to keep Dog from getting involved early in the game). My point is, build how you wish. Also, the Respec mod is helpful at allowing for adapting to the environs.; recommended.

Yeah Leliana's hit rate was awful for me last game.  I'd go 2 Dexterity and 1 Cunning.  Using Repeater gloves and aim increase your hit rate but I think you're slower and do less damage so I don't like Repeater gloves or Aim.  I think Leliana's does way more damage as a DW melee rogue.  But I still think archery is fun.  I get 20 Strength for wades armor.
