Maybe the Keepers built them. Vigil, the VI on Ilos surmises that maybe the Keepers were possibly the first race harvested by the Reapers. What if they were, but not only that what if they were the creators of the Reapers? The Keepers (or whatever they were originally called) build the Reapers, the Reapers become disgusted by organic life seeing themselves as superior and virtually wipe out their creators, relegating what's left to a servile race that maintains the Citadel.

It could be none other than the rebel billionaire himself Sir Richard Branson who made the Reapers.

so some thorian decided to go with cybernetics?  or maybe the reapers stole indoctrination from the thorians...and in reality, most of the thorian race has been previously harvested?

The thorian Theory is as old as sin it self, there are however strong evidence that the Thorians are the ones that made them

I think its odd that they are ships, with living space, corridors and such. I don't see why they would have these if they developed themselves.

I imagine instead, that they were created simply to be vessels of war, their computers given AI and then they out-lived their creators, or killed them in the traditional sci-fi manner. They either then forgot what happened (memory wipe?), or simply refuse to acknowledge it.

They could have been made to protect their creators from attack by other advanced spacefaring races. Maybe that's why they return to wipe out civilisation every 50,000 years? It could be that's how long it takes for a species' technology to advance to the point where its considered a threat?

I dunno - It doesn't seem like a very dramatic storyline for the galaxy's greatest threat, does it?

I think Bioware already did a "Defenders of an extinct people go nuts and threaten the current generation" storyline though.

you're all wrong: Bioware made em.

Hm close..

The reapers are obviously EA's fault! Not only does EA random evil things like ruining whole game series (C&C). There are direct hints!
1. BioWare got indoctrinated to make this Bazaar thingy, obviously,... and the reapers do not gain profit from this, EA does however. Indoctrination was EA's gift to the reapers.
2. The beginning of ME2!! There's an EA logo in the Mass Relay! The Mass Relay technology was submited to the reapers by EA.

Since the reapers are made to look like organic species, it is most likely their creators look like some kind of alien beetles.

after reading Archie's post I think a big victory will come from making a star go super nova and killing majority of reapers. Seems like foreshadowing when doing the Tali recruitment mission not to make a star "dying" important to the plot of stopping the reapers.

The reapers were probably some species from another galaxy and being big stupid shellfish they decided to turn themselves into abominations of "flesh and steel" as Saren put it and thus became living starships.

In reality the reapers think it sucks, and can't reproduce either, so they want to spread the suck around so everybody can "enjoy" what they do. When they tried it with the protheans, it didn't work because the protheans were ugly bug or squid people.

My Theory: The Reapers made themselves. They were the first galactic civilization, and they began to over-develop. They eventually realized that technology was the limit of achievement and that flesh and blood fell far beneath it. So they turned themselves progressively into machines, and made themselves more and more advanced until they no longer could. Couple that with hyper-intelligence brought on from centuries and centuries of existence, and you have your species of genocidal robots.

Either we think alike or you have been reading my mind.
Kidding aside, this seems like the most plausible hypothesis.

This is the biggest question I've been wondering. Where do the reapers come from or who made them? Does anyone know? I wonder if we ever find out. And if sovereign nearly killed everyone how is it even possible to beat a whole armada of reapers. Mass effect 3 is gonna be pretty interesting. Image IPB

Come on man, No one knows. Did you really have to ask that. Allthough bioware did ment..................
