No, the Japanese reputation for shoddy craftsmanship is 40 years old and well out of date. The Chinese reputation is well deserved. Hence all those toy recalls last year because of lead based paint.

My Theory: The Reapers made themselves. They were the first galactic civilization, and they began to over-develop. They eventually realized that technology was the limit of achievement and that flesh and blood fell far beneath it. So they turned themselves progressively into machines, and made themselves more and more advanced until they no longer could. Couple that with hyper-intelligence brought on from centuries and centuries of existence, and you have your species of genocidal robots.
I agree with this theory. I had in my current fan fic, where the Reapers were actually a specie from another galaxy, which was old and unihabitable. They became Reapers so they could survive the journey through darkspace into the milky way galaxy. Where they are using the galaxy's population and resources to make themselves stronger.

Watch the news lately? Lead painted toys, poisoned dog food, poisoned baby formula, mercury laced crayons.... I don't know why you're so quick to defend the neo-fascist People's "Republic". They're also evil overlords planning on the domination of the universe so they also have that reaper connection going for them.

(It's cause Reapers look like Squid/Cuttlefish and Squidward hates Organic Life, because all Organic Life loves Spongebob.)

The Reapers are a species of machine and organics. Since they are machines, they were once created, but from an earlier race. Similar to the quarians creating the geth.
At one point, when the Reapers was a watch dog or a servant to their creator, they eventually went rogue. Like the rogue artificial intelligence on Luna(What caused the AI to go rogue? I have No freakin clue, but only thought that comes to mine are Reapers.)
Does that event seem similar to a specie that were well and alive in our milky way galaxy? Well, it should, the Quarians!!! The Geth turned Rogue against their owners.
So, what i'm trying to say is Geth, Reapers, and the AI's on luna rebelled against their creator.
And we know why they did. Synthetics have the ability to chose their own path of righteousness, according to Legion.
The Reapers were a mistake.

See how our solar system has a center of gravity and all the planets rotate around the sun?
The same works for galaxies, they all have a center of gravity with millions of systems in them.
The same is probably true for the universe, and so on and so forth. How crazy would it be if we could eventually go to other galaxies in Mass Effect only the find they were completely destroyed by the reapers?

1. We don't know who build them. By all estimates they are atleast millions of years old.
2. Read the blurb about the new novel to see how humanity (Cerberus) think to counter this threat.
Here are some other ideas:
A. A computer virus
B. Mass effect kinetic fields do not protect from energy weapons
C. Like all races in the ME universe they are dependent on the Mass relay network. If you manage to destroy one of them then the Reapers could get stuck.
Yup. We'll hyjac one of their ships, then fly it into the Reaper mothership and patch ourselves in using their signal. Then we upload the virus and hightail it outta there!
Or there's option D. Will Smith flies infront of them and then uses the parachute in the face technique to make them crash, followed by a punch in the face and a 'Welcome to earth!'
