Just wondering, rogues and archers get along fine in light, warriors do fine in massive so who benefits from heavy?

Ive played all classes and never used it on any of them apart from when they are low level

People who want to look cooler than others, that's what. :)

Seriously though, best armor in the game is heavy: Evon the Great's mail. Good for Warriors or strength rogues.

Mages are best with heavy armor, Arcane Warriors and Shapeshifters. Fatigue is a factor in how much mana you need to cast spells. I was shocked when I saw Blizzard cost 132 mana with Combat Magic on, but 76 if you have a low fatigue score. Shapeshifters add their form fatigue onto whatever armor you might wear, so a fatigue reducing set like Wades is very useful for them. Wades armor set is good for all mages in fact.

On a sidenote, I'd recommend Venture for those types. Another cool heavy armor set, but for awakening. Sentinel is overkill. In addition to being ugly. Reminds of those daedric armors from TES. To each their own though.

Good for all mages, unless the mage isn't an Arcane Warrior - they do exist, believe it or not -  and in that case the idea of putting points into strength just to be able to equip something other than robes is just silly. (IMO.)

More OT, I only use heavy armours for tanking warriors, early in the game and until they can equip massive, and for my squishy dex build warriors because they don't want or need massive.

There's also the third option. The strength heavy talent spamming warrior. My personal favorite.

Heavy armor is fine for many uses. It's medium armor that doesn't find as much uses.

I'm not a fan of heavy armor even when I played as a warrior. I usually let Sten and Alistair wear heavy armor. I prefer the medium armor that Wade makes from killing the high dragon from the ashes quest for my rogue or warrior.

Wade can make 3 kinds.. medium, heavy, or massive. And then the light drake scale armor, of course. Still prefer the heavy there myself as well. If only because the item set still gets a bonus with Evon the Great's mail.

Seems like in DA2, "medium" is the standard armor for high level rogues. So I guess that's it's niche.

Heavy armor for my Thieves and Mages, and those Warriors not wearing something else. This seems to prevent fatal Overwhelm attacks, and allows my mages to wear something else besides those hats.

Well, the shapeshifter forms Bear and Spider have their normal attacks do more damage with increased strength, so they have a legitimate reason to increase strength. Spellpower increases their stats too, but the strength scaling for spider is a bit slow.

All of the classes can benefit from wearing heavy armor; I guess it's better than sprinting about in your smallclothes.

It's true there are very few heavy armor pieces that remains useful after one gets access to the top tier light and massive armor sets. Evon's Mail(with or without Wade's Heavy Dragonscale) as already mentioned, and Armor of Diligence in Origins are the only one that comes to mind right now.

The way I see it, I believe these provide the best dividends for certain specific builds, like say a defensive warrior, or an Arcane Warrior or a specialist Shapeshifter. There are better alternatives for other builds, at least from a min-maxing perspective.
