Well, I never thought my question would generate this much discussion.
So after reading through all of that I have a few things to say.
Someone mentioned demons not making a mage more powerful when they posses them, but I have to say it depends on the demon. As we know for demons rage and hunger are the weakest sloth sits in the middle and some are powerful others are not (shambling corpse vs Sloth from the tower). Desire and pride demons are the strongest. Pride is generally stronger but there are some incredibly powerful desire demons. I would say most abominations are probably mages possessed by rage demons, or maybe hunger. Rage demons are a dimer a dozen and weak so those abominations are fairly weak and look like hell (heh). However haven't you noticed when you come across a pride or desire demon they can go between a human form or a demon form and they are powerful.
When mages sleep they can be visited by demons in the form of nightmares but so can others mages just attract more demons. They can't be forcible taken over by a demon when dreaming (unless they are a somniari), however the constant nightmare or temptations or demons are the danger. After a while any mage could say yes to a demon if just to make it stop, this is probably why Orana became a tranquil. In the harrowing you enter the fade with lyruim so that the Templar can see if you can resist a demon when in the fade where the demon has an advantage.
As to my original question I think it would be interesting to make a deal with a demon and get enough power to finish your quest and then the demon gets your body. or make a deal with a fade spirit that is not really good or bad... something like a spirit of Duty if such a spirit exists. Hell an offer can be made to a warrior or rouge as well it's not like demons need to possess mages. Sophia dryden was possessed by a powerful demon... Though, I am not entirely sure if that was not just her corpse.
For any spelling and/or grammatical errors I am sorry.
