Wynne and Evangeline weren't/aren't insane.

Eva-who?

Wynne drinks with Oghren, how's that not insane?

A character from Asunder. Since you don't recognize the name, I won't spoil anymore than that which has been spoiled.

Except the Spirit Eater mechanic (note: not the story, but the actual gameplay mechanic.)  Screw that noise.  The rest was awesome though.

@Skuld Do yourself a favor and pick up Asunder.  Unmarked spoilers are everywhere on the forums and it's actually a really good book.

i usually don't pick up game/setting-related books (i blame forgotten realms and a book on icewind dale, crystal something?). but if you guys say it's good i might actually give it a try ;)

i don't really mind spoilers. unless it's something big like...

Doesn't change the impact of the some of those major spoilers.

Skuld, I don't usually read the EU either in most of my games, but you might want to in this case.  You won't be able to avoid the rampant Asunder spoilers all over the forums.

Natashina: not a punishment. It's a choice. With extra power comes extra risk.

Natashina: not a punishment. It's a choice. With extra power comes extra risk.

It still doesn't change the fact that I think it's a poor idea that seems like it would have clumsy mechanics, would take a lot to explain for new players and seems rather pointless considering similar mechanics have been rejected in the past.

The extra risk should be walking into a town and having your reputation as a blood mage proceed you.  People cowering in fear or slavers trying to tempt you. Or have your party members turn on you.  Or you'll have to deal with extra random Templar encounters because they want your head on a pike.  Stuff along those lines.

There should be risks, you are right.  However, those should be more of a RP thing than a game mechanic.

Doesn't seem like a game play thing either. 1st encounter with Cullen and not a word about my mage raining lightning from the heavens.

The devs have already said that the specializations in the upcoming game will have story impact.   We're limited to one as a result. This includes the appropiate reactions from party members and NPCs if you're a blood mage.

For DA2, there is a stated and simple excuse: They were planning on have Cullen as well as other NPCs react to a blood mage Hawke as you figure they should have.  However, thanks to the ~12 months of total development time the game got, it was cut for time.

So yeah, we won't need a clumsy game mechanic to give us that RP experience.

Why would you want random lore-braking game elements?

WOT - mages are in danger of becoming posses. ALL mages. Blood mages are in even greater danger.

Why do some many mage-players want the "blessing" part of being a mage, but want to "ignore" the curse part, and don't want it "forced" upon them.

Forced? It's like saying you want to be an elf in DA2 but you don't like developers "forcing" pointy ears on you.

Trying to reduce negatives to just RP choices, makes an already bad representation of mages even worse. Demons and possession as it is right now is a joke. Feels like a joke and not an actual threat.

You're applying egregious double standards to how you want to see this implemented. Yes, mages are at risk of possession, just like warriors are at risk of getting their guts ripped open... but the latter, in Dragon Age, is never a luck-based affair, but a skill-based one. As should any issues a mage faces with demons be. It keeps things balanced and lets player skill matter.

Except this isn't entirely true nor a comparable situation given a Warrior can retire from the field and avoid combat, A Mage faces the peril of possession every time they sleep. Every time they cast a spell, Every time they step into the Fade consciously, Yes a Warrior is at risk to die from combat, but a Mage is at risk every time they do something as Mundane as sleeping.

Yes, but if you have to do this every time your mage goes to sleep the game will drag on a bit. Sort of like the Deep Roads in Origins, only potentially worse.

You should get the hint when your mage accomplishes quickest and cleanest harrowing of all time in DAO. That mage is not getting possessed.

Not much is known about Hawke however we know how disciplined and capable Malcolm was, I suppose his children are like him as well.

Also we know for a fact that demons hate the taint therefore grey warden mage abominations are very very rare.

I was under the impression that any mage can become possessed. It's just that really skilled ones are unlikely to. (Or more unlikely to, since if most mages got possessed the setting could not exist.)

A silly strawman.

First, all classes are at risk of getting their guts ripped open. Death in combat CAN happen.

Death from possession cannot happen.

If you want to talk about a double standard, there is one. Mages are immune to their "curse".

Also, for a RPG game, it's the characters skills that should matter more than player one, but the reason I said something like QTE (difficulty might depend on various factor) is because it gives the player a chance to avoid it.

Just because you CAN get attacked at any time, doesn't mean you will.

That is kinda what I meant really. It's very unlikely therefore Xil was right to compare it to a warrior getting ripped open because that is more likely than a mage with such capabilities getting possessed. .

More powerful mages are more attractive to demons and attract more powerful ones.

So powerful mages are not immune to possession, nor is it very unlikely.

I never mentioned power without discipline and in general being smart. Name one smart and powerful mage who got possessed. They are not immune but its very unlikely because they will never get possessed in their dreams and they can fight demons and only if they lose the fight they will get possessed. Your character can mop the floor with pride demons aka the strongest demon known. Overwhelming the mage is the only way a powerful mage can be possessed and it happened with Uldred. As long as you win the fight with it you won't get possessed.

Powerful mages might be more attractive to demons but the demons are smart, they know they can get wiped out if they attempt such a thing as well.

My point is the game is very OK with mage player not getting possessed. Only if you lose a fight to demon you will get possessed and that is when its practically "game over" as you just lost. (critical mission failure or whatever)

I see your stance and I agree with you.  However, the point that the others I think were trying to make is that even the most smart and careful mage could end up overwhelmed at any time.

Well the demon needs to be in the same world as the mage, be it fade or Thedas in order to fight and overwhelm the mage. If the player can defeat the demon there will be no possession. Yes the smartest mage can become possessed too. There are mages who their risk of getting possessed is lower than getting struck by lighting. And this was my point, at this point possession becomes a minor threat as it as less than 0.000001% chance of happening. The mage Inquisitor is one these mages.
