And yet they can aford a computer to talk to other people on. This is shocking to know, but I think the real reason is that only folks who like modding games or hardware are into PC's, everyone else prefers the simple, already set up and ready to go, no installation needed form of gaming that is consoles. That and the tradition of getting your games from a store, before games could be able to be downloaded. People often forget about how much traditional actions, or even just actions of people in a previous generation, can affect how people act in the modern age.
Give it about two to three decades and consoles and pcs will have become so close alike that the distinction will be mostly irrelevent.
I suspect that the reasons for having a PC or console are as numerous as the amount of people you ask.
For me, consoles are nice if you just want to relax on the couch for a bit or have friends over. PCs aren't designed with multiple people using them in mind, and it's kind of a pain to haul around an entire PC along with monitor, mouse, keyboard, and cables.
From a hardware standpoint, the distinction already is largely irrelevant right now though. Consoles are basically just PCs with a specialized operating system.
