Doing a new playthrough with human noble female and going the queen routine. Done this many times and i always enjoy it, but i have been wondering something lately. Heard about hardening characters and i can't quite grasp what it means, so a few questions.

How do you harden Alistair? Is he the only character you can harden? And how does he change if you do it? For better or worse?.

Not sure i should have started a new topic, but here goes.

To harden him you pick the option in his personal quest, "People are like that. You have to look out for yourself."

You can harden Leliana as well if you do her personal quest.

Better or worse-your call really. He has more self reliance.

Yeah i read that he wants to be king if you harden, thing is as human noble you can get him to end up king either way by marriage. I am just wondering if his quirky personality changes? Like if he doesn't look at the relationship in the same way etc.

You also need to talk to him at the camp after his personal quest, most people forget to inform that. And his approval needs to be higher then 75, otherwise it won't happen.

He stays much the same. He just becomes a little bit more pragmatic, is all.

Hardened Alistair isn't really all that different from what I can tell. Leliana is more so.

Yeah, so basically, you have to act like the antithesis of what you want him to be (hence the high approval) if you want to "harden" him.

Wardens that actually practice what they preach get screwed.

Sound mechanic, IMO (... not).

The wiki page has a good run down of what changes when you harden either Leliana or Alistair.

Whether or not either one is hardened also affects their epilogues.

Technically not. You might just leave him at the camp and spoil him with gifts and by saying nice things.

But otherwise, yeah. Following the warden mentality to the bone will make his approval drop rock bottom.

How do you harden Alistair?

Hmmm.... I could think of many ways to accomplish that.

I can never bring myself to not tell him that he has me. Especially after the warden tells him that her home is with him now. She IS his family.

Hah!

I do wish we had come up with a better word to describe the personality shift. Harden? Really?

We could just say that he's erected a barrier in his mind to outside scroteny.

Uhh, I mean scrutiny.

It has always been out of character for my Warden to harden him so I've never done it. "Everyone is out for themselves," "how could you be so stupid?!" or whatever is too cynical.

Leliana on the other hand is very easy for me to harden. It's more believable. She was an assassin. Saying her **** doesn't stink is stupid. I wasn't going to tell her she was meant for the chantry or not to feel good about killing the ****** who betrayed, tortured, stalked, and tried to kill her.

You could say that. A hardened Alistair can join the Warden and Isabela for a threesome, so here the "hardened" pun is even more accurate.  You can also convince him not to dump you after you've made him king and you're not a human noble, but this will not be relevant for your character it seems.

A hardened Leliana will join in a romp with Isabela (and Zev if you're inclined to invite him) as well. Should you go the male human noble noble route and choose to marry Anora as her prince consort) hardened Leliana is willing to stick around as your royal mistress. BTW considering that route requires screwing Alistair out of his rightful crown, not staying entirely loyal to Leliana by marrying Anora *and* then cheating on Anora with Leliana, it totally should have unlocked an achievement called "You're a royal bastard."  B)

Come again? A male Warden?

Personally, my read on that is that he hates the idea less, not that he really wants it.  Your mileage may vary.

He's certainly a better king in the epilogues when he's hardened.

True, question is how good of a king will he be in Inquisition based on this choice?. Just have to wait and see i suppose. So hard to make a canon save, hate it.

Even if hardened he still give the line: "I didn't wanted to be king, and I still don't" So Alistair will likely never trully embrace the idea. I think it's more on the lines of:

Unhardened Alistair: begrudgingly accepts his fate as king

Hardened Alistair: Accepts his fate as king

This was a key reason for me to pick him:

Slave trade stopped:

Alistair is king

“With the slavers shut down in the Alienage, the lot of the city-born elves improved for a time. The new king even named the local elder to his personal court--a scandal amongst the humans, but a sign of new hope to the elves.”

Alistair is not king

“With the slavers shut down in the Alienage, the lot of the city-born elves improved for a time. A food shortage years later forced Queen Anora to come down hard on elven rioters, an act not quickly forgiven and a sign that tensions between the elves and humans were far from resolved.

If this Alienage problem is allowed to continue, then I thought it would be Ferelden's weak spot. An enemy could use the elves against them in terrorist plots.

Now that I said this the endings I heard were just rumors and I guess you should go with the one you like the best.
