The phrase ball & chain isn't that big of deal. Plenty of people use it in real life who also love their wives.
Its just a harmless joke about marriage and being tied to one person.

On the ball and chain comment-it was also put in for male PC's . There a conversation you have with Anders in Awakening in which he asks, "what would you do if you didn't have to be a Warden?. If you respond, "I'd go back to court", Anders responds, "Oh, the old ball and chain, huh".
I haven't tried making that response with a male character not married to Anora, so i'm not sure if it would change if it was like a city elf just involved at court. I imagine it's just something put in for those on the royal path with male Couslands.
In any case, it's clearly something the writer thinks is funny and they have a track record of putting it in there across the board.
I seem to recall Anders making the same remark ("ball and chain") to my female Commander of the Grey/Queen o' Ferelden. Chalk it up to economy, perhaps, and Bioware having a one-size-fits-all approach to things, much like Alistair's remark in DA2.

I would personally agree, since I don't want to be married in the first place. That's how much I loathe the ball and chain. haha
But other people are offended, so I can't say it isn't a big deal. It obviously is, to them.

It's not really a big deal or worth debating. Frankly I don't REALLY care. It was just something that at the time kind of struck me. I guess it is the noble if he mentions the archdemon thing and I guess that does making it sound more like he's joking about it with the follow up. It just didn't come off so well at the time to me. It seemed less kind and especially given the context that he is making this comment as a king in front of the champion and company. Actually, that might have been why I was shocked in the first place now that I think of it. He said this in front of people he doesn't really know and he is the damn king. I had two thoughts at the time. One was that I was really nice to him and now I'm a ball in chain? Pfft. The other was 'he didn't just call my PC that in front of people he doesn't even really know... very kingly. Pffft'
Yeah, that was pretty much it. It was just me thinking of how the writers once again miss the mark.
I just saw it as the way couples tease each other sometimes, personally. Particularly couples with a very good relationship. It fits Alistair's humour as well.
The only problem with that idea is that his response is actually, "I'm not afraid of her just because she killed an Arch demon." So he's definitely referring to the PC.
I didn't say there was anything wrong with them feeling that way. I'm just pointing out that I don't think the intention was to show him as disrespecting the Warden.
I don't get the argument here, it feels like you want me to condemn the developers or their choice in turn of phrase. Sorry, but I won't do that any more than I'd condemn someone for their interpretation of it.
I only offer up my view point to illustrate that there IS another way to see it and to point out that I don't imagine the developers suddenly deciding to change Alistair's personality.
You stated your opinion and I stated mine. I'm not trying to convince you of anything.
Read your comments again:
your comment: "okay? You seem really agitated by this discussion."
Why would I be? This statement didn't make sense to me. As I said I'm not.
your comment: "I think you misunderstood my reasoning on bringing up the partial anecdote about RCA. I wasn't using that as a part of the discussion. It was a piece of random trivia that fit the topic and I thought people might find interesting."
Ans: I answer this appropriately as so did others "times have changed".

Ans: You don't have to agree. Everyone has a right to their own opinion. You liked the phrase good for you. I don't. It is just that simple.
My reply was this: "It is nice that you are trying to do this. If they find it offensive, then they are in step with their current social environment. There is nothing wrong or incorrect about it.
Sorry but I can be analytical in that my background is engineering. I thought this was a discussion not an argument.
If this is an argument, I'm out. I share my views because I can but I have no interest in arguments.
Well, that's good, because, argument or discussion. We've both made or statements. You stated your opinion and I stated mine. I'm not trying to convince you of anything.

I do feel the need to point out that the bit about RCA was a total aside. It was not meant as a part of this discussion. I just thought people might find the random trivia interesting.
You also may want to consider your wording in the future lest others also misunderstand your discussions as argument.
I really don't know why you persist.
I didn't accuse you of misconduct. I pointed out that the way you went about discussing the topic came across as argumentative.I really don't know why you persist.
My statement is not * snip* "You stated your opinion and I stated mine. I'm not trying to convince you of anything."
Your statement has no merit: "You also may want to consider your wording in the future lest others also misunderstand your discussions as argument."
Argument is a subset of "statement" in logic. It is defined as an angry disagreement. There is no anger therefore there is no need for me to change what I'm writing. If there was feel free to report me but nothing I posted will show any anger or misconduct.
I didn't accuse you of misconduct. I pointed out that the way you went about discussing the topic came across as argumentative.
All I did was try to put forth a view point that no one else had brought up. I have done that. I don't feel I need to further defend a view point that I presented as being one possible and specifically stating that others are valid. Thus the *snip* which is only there to indicate that *I* removed part of your quote in my post.
If you feel the need to continue this line of discussion we can take it to pm because at this point we are only discussing our interactions and thusly severely of topic.
This is only an argument in your mind. It is not in mind. Nor do I need to change the way I communicate.
I just gifted Alistair a burlesque portrait of Mother Hannah of redcliffe village chantry. It hardened him up real good for the rest of the game..

It looks as if the writer thinks this slang is funny.
Was the term ever used when talking about the male spouse? Did anyone play female Cousland married to the King and was there the same comment?

Yes, as I mentioned a few posts up-thread, I seem to recall my female Commander of the Grey/Queen o' Ferelden got the same dialogue from Anders. (I can't be 100% certain - it wouldn't bother me or stand out in the way it clearly does other players, but I am certain I've heard the line, and I cannae imagine how else I could have heard it.) That Warden wasn't a Cousland (Esme Amell marries who she wants to marry, and who am I to tell her she can't be queen?) but I doubt the flag is checking for origin, just a condition like 'married' or 'queen'.
What I'm wondering now - since I've never done a mistress ending - is what is Anders' dialogue if a mistress Warden uses the "I'd go back to court." line? *strokes chin*

Thanks so much. I might try to make a female mistress to find out.

IIRC, when I played a mistress Warden in Awakening she didn't have the response option to say she'd go back to court.
Oh yes, I remember Anders saying that same ball and chain line.. I forgot about that. I took it as being Queen was like a ball and chain (chained to the whole political thing), not being married to Alistair.
