I've considered doing this for over a year.  I finally pulled the trigger a couple of weeks ago.  I introduced my 65 year old mother to Mass Effect.  My mother has always been a sci-fi enthusiast (not a fanatic).  She's the one who introduced me to Star Trek and other franchises.  At least franchises from TV and film from the 60's and 70's.

As you might expect, my mother's computer doesn't support even running ME1, so in order for her to experience ME, I need to pack up my PC and bring it over to her house.  That being the case, this thread will be updated only as often as I am able to pack up and transport.  Or if I can get my place cleaned up enough to let her come over here.  *fingers crossed*

Anyway, this thread is going to be dedicated to the story of my mother's Shepard.  I first introduced the idea in the "What did you do in the ME Trilogy today?" thread.  The next post is essentially a reprint of that post.

Today I had my 65 year old, sci-fi enthusiast mother begin ME1.  As I expected, she took nearly an hour to set up her Shepard.  After watching her coordination while trying to walk around the Normandy (so much fail!), we decided that I would be the one to run the combat while she made all the dialog decisions.

We've only gone through Eden Prime, but so far Gloria Shepard is tending toward neutral with a slight Paragon bent from her Spacer/War Hero beginnings.  I've told her nothing as far as spoilers, so she's even managed to mess up the first sparks of the Shepard/Kaidan ship.

It's been a looooong time since I've played with fresh eyes.  I'm really looking forward to continuing Gloria's career.

why does my mother have to be an anti-sci-fi extremist? *sigh*
well, kudos for getting your mom addicted to mass effect.

Be prepared to go from "best child ever" to "family black sheep" as your mother goes from ME1 to the end of ME3...

Keep in mind that while my mother is a sci-fi enthusiast, she isn't an avid gamer, or even someone who seeks out sci-fi.  She will just choose sci-fi over most other genres of entertainment.

The ME story is something completely divorced from almost anything that she has previously experienced.  That is one of the reasons I'm looking forward to seeing the story through her eyes; she isn't hard-bitten and jaded from every game that has come before in the last 20 years.

... if she chooses Liara the forum will explode.

Good luck with this, I wish I could get my other half interested (and she's only 34 :( )

Neat! I'm looking forward to all updates.

My bf has played the trilogy, pretty much near total Paragon except for Destroy.

And my cousin played ME1 but not anything after that :(

Do not be surprised if this child of the late 1940s shoots Wrex, let's Kaidan die, spares the Rachni queen, and sacrifices the council, and romances Liara, and shoots Balak. Do not be further surprised if when it comes to ME2 that she helps Zaeed kill Vido, and goes about 90% renegade. She'll probably destroy the Heretics, too, and side with Tali.

Next game session with mom is going to be Sunday afternoon.  I'm hoping we're able to get as far as leaving the Citadel, and wondering how much of the content there I'll allow her to miss (since I'll be in control of the walking).

I think it's totally awesome that you introduced your mother to the mass effect universe :D. I've actually done something similar but instead of my mother, I'm playing for my 5 year old daughter. She loved to watch me killing everything as a krogan in me3 mp and asked if she could play. So, here's hoping she'll enjoy it as much as I do. I hope your mom finds many enjoyable hours in the mass effect universe :D

If I could find a girl that played Mass Effet (along with a few other things) I would be a little suspicious. It would be a little too ideal.

Be sure to tell you mom, she is not alone.  I'm 63.  Love games that let me play a female.

Since mom has NO idea how to go about leveling up, I'm the one who will be pumping up both Charm and Intimidate so she has access to as many choices as possible.  I can tell you that there is a ZERO percent chance that she will hook up with Liara due to her religious beliefs.

I actually expected to see an almost pure Paragon score and have been pleasantly shocked at how many Renegade responses she's taken so far.

Is your mom familiar with the works that ME plagiar..... um.... is inspired by? Hyperion Cantos and Pohl's Heechee novels, in particular.

I'm 61 and fell down the slippery slope to renegade. Well mostly renegade. It's just that with Kaidan dead, there was Liara.

Being an avid gamer might've been a good thing as gameplay is the only thing that's consistently improved over the series. And I'm not sure being jaded from previous games is what made ME3 so hard to swallow.

Still I'm must admit I'm curious how you mother will react to the more "artsy" things in ME3, being a hardcore sci-fi fan.

And the fact that you're playing together is just awesome by itself. I feel that needs to be stated.

I'm really interested to see what becomes of this. I've always been intrigued with the choices other people make in games like these, and it'll be especially interesting to see how someone who doesn't normally partake in games perceives the world of Mass Effect.

Especially when it comes to stomaching the ending.

This is really cool. I think you may have shown me how to get my Wife Doni to play. I'm going to run this pass her and see what she thinks, Then there would be another FemShep on the board.
