I've never even heard of this game before, but it looks interesting. I'm not normally in to MMOs though.

Yeah, me neither. I spent exactly one weekend playing SWTOR, but the whole MMO style really didn't appeal to me--I really didn't want to pay to play, but you kind of have to do that if you want to make any progress. Not having voice chat or real friends to play with probably decreased my inclination to play, as well.
This is a good article I read a while back about the difference between Destiny being not an MMO, but rather a "shared-world shooter".

It helped me understand that it is going to be rather more of a cooperative game setting with shooter elements.

It's not a straight MMO. it's more of a single player that has both competitive and cooperative events sprinkled in.
Its the game I plan to buy an XBOX one for.
