If you only use one character model and that model was female, wouldn't that look a little odd? Why would an entire group of templars or an army of wardens be female? Is it an only woman group? Same thing could be brought up about a group of all males, but males are often considered the default.

Yeah it would be odd, just like seeing nothing but males is odd too. :P But that's what we often get. Males being the default is something that a lot of us would like to see changed. No reason for it that I can see.

Odd or awesome? Because I vote awesome.

Good point, but having only one model done should qualify as incomplete, meaning, the product is not ready to be shown.

I agree, at least one generic female character model for guards and soldiers seems like a worthwhile use of resources.

Why does Bioware get so much flak for this sort of thing?
" Not enough openly gay characters."
"I want my male Inquisitor to be able to where dresses because I'm Transgender."
" Why isn't the Female Inquisitor the default?"
" We need more multiracial people in the game."
Enough is enough. Yes Bioware is great at having a diverse cast and characters in this game. It's why these games have such wide appeal to so many Audiences. Its great that it happens. But really people. Stop looking at Bioware for some sort of social justice and equality. It is totally unfair to Bioware that people have thrown this mantle on them. Give them a break. Apologies for the rant.

Why do we have to have 50/50 splits again? I like having my asymmetrical balances in factions, towards both sides of the scale.

The all-male soldiers in the DA:I concept art / screen shots are troubling, but I think that relates to Mes' question about: why is the male model always first? I'm not going to mention the p-word. (It's not penis, you pervs!) But, well, we know the answer. It is what it is. Keep pushing, gently but persistently, and things will change.

The male model is always first because males design and draw them? And market to an audience that is predominantly male? That isn't the p-word. It's what I'd expect any company to do: target your primary market.

Give a mouse a cookie, they'll be asking for the deed to your house and legal claim of your first born it seems.

Personally, I think because bioware made a public statement about diversity and representation in their games, people have gotten it in their heads that bioware owes them more then just a game, but a entire platform to chastise other games and game designers. They gave an inch, and they've been giving miles ever since.

It's not flak, it's just a thread where we can discuss.

People bring these issues up not with just Bioware but other companies as well. And they keep coming up because, to a lot of people, they are issues.

Despite this, Bioware gets tons of praise (and deservedly so) as well. For every 1 problem I have with Bioware, I have 10 things I absolutely adore.

I think it'd be wise to not attempt to shut people up. It's just a discussion.

I have never seen bioware actually praised by anyone in anything more then a off handed "Oh you did this? Cool, thanks" sort of way. Though a lot of folks seem more then ready to tear bioware a new hole and accuse them of being discriminatory or slacking in their duties if they don't get their "representation" exactly the way they want it.

Seems somewhat spoiled in my opinion, or maybe its just a generational thing? If bioware threw whatever cause I felt passionate about a bone or two, even if small, I know I'd have at least shown some gratitude without dismissing them as not doing nearly enough while doing more then almost everyone else.

Just saying. It wouldn't kill anyone to have a "Thanks for the effort" bioware thread posted once in a while between the constant flood of "WHY DIDN'T YOU MAKE MORE WOMEN THEN MEN BIOWARE!?" or "WHY BIOWARE IS HOMOPHOBIC FOR NOT MAKING EVERYONE BISEXUAL!" threads.

While I don't much disagree with OP's original point, there are female faceless mook templars in DA2:

110015.jpg

You can tell by the way they stand with their hips jutting out and their backs arched suggestively. <_<

The paradox of females in armor: If they're feminized, they look silly. If they look like real women in real armor, people will perceive them as men.

I've experienced this myself. I have a SWAT uniform I've worn for Halloween a few times. I have nice curves, but stick a bulletproof vest and a helmet on me, and people consistently express surprise that I'm a woman when I start talking.

This is probably a resource intensive idea, but how about something like Saints Row 3?

You have a handful of "slots", basically which models the game will populate the maps with. You then have a bunch of soldier models (male and female) to put into the "slots".

Thusly you could make your army all-male, all-female, or a combination.

I don't want to stray too far off topic, but I'm okay with some feminization of female armor. I think where problems arise is when the approach taken to differentiate female armor from male is with more exposed skin.

But that seems to be an actual legitimate flaw in humans ability of perception then anything sexists, because when you wear head obscuring and body obscuring clothing, it tends to make your body obscured and hard to identify. And because its rare to encounter a situation where its difficult to distinguish genders of individuals, most people assume, thanks to the brains memory of past experience, what would be the more likely gender identifier to use.

Pro-tip: If you think a thread is pointless, why don't you just stop posting in it?  This isn't directed towards anyone in particular, it's a general statement.

This is one of those things where Bioware will never make everyone happy. They'll do as they see fit and nitpicking won't change their opinion.

Because BioWare is one of the few companies that give a **** about these things.

I am not a fan of BioWare because I like it's games. After all, I play dozens of games a year and like most of them. I am a fan of BioWare because their game worlds have space for people like me to be heroes. I am a fan of BioWare because I believe they value me as a fan as much as they value a straight, white male fan.

I have never seen bioware actually praised by anyone in anything more then a off handed "Oh you did this? Cool, thanks" sort of way.

Dude, people adore BioWare for its handling of minorities.

Why are people talking about realism of women soldiers in a game where women turn into dragons

Just like real life.

But seriously just because this is a fantasy game doesn't mean there isn't room for a touch of realism and believability.

Those gosh darned "resources"...

What are the obvious reasons that the one model is always male?

Well in regards to soldiers the answer is obvious because if you look at most armed forces in our own history the vast majority of soldiers have always been male and as much as you might hate to admit it there has always been a reason for this.

Truth is males are generally more aggressive than females which makes them more suited to violence which in turn leads to more men signing up for military roles than women. Of course that is not to say that there aren't aggressive women however aggression generally comes more natural to men than women.

That's placing a lot of weight on the one line in the character creator.

I don't think we ever intended the gender divide to be 50/50 among the military forces. That said, the issue is mainly one of modeling time to do extra versions of existing forces...and, happily, we do have female versions of some of the commonly-encountered models. So the split still won't be 50/50, but you will definitely see female soldiers/enemies in the mix.

Thank you David. :D

When you showed up, this picture came to mind.

It's from a fan that has loved your work since BG2, so please don't take any offense.

Good, you can go play that then.  Enjoy the Jell-o animation of the breasts as every plot important female NPC tries to have sex with you.  Gaze into the "plot depth" behind the "Lesbomancy" scene in the sequel.   Marvel at the variety of lady models!  You can have: Child, Old Woman or 20-30 yr old sexpot.  Bang hookers on the street, bang the waitress if you want.  Women are primarily there for Geralt's pleasure, nothing more.

Thank every benign being out there that DA is not the Witcher.  Unlike CDPR, BioWare obviously cares about presenting women in their games in a manner that doesn't reduce them to sex objects and quest rewards.

That is because you know, the games are based on the books. Should CD Projekt Red change the world of the Withcer in order to promote social justice etc. ? Mess with Sapkowski's artistic integritiy?  :P

Bioware takes an equal opportunity approach, making the males into sex objects as well, so everyone can be equal. The more broken the better to give dem folks something to fix.
