I'm at the part at Redcliffe Castle where Morrigan goes into the fade to find the possessive demon in the kid. I can't kill this demon to save my life. Any strategy or hints that may help. Thanks

At which point are you getting problems? What level is your Morrigan and which spells does she have? What's her spellpower?

You can list the spells like this for brevity: "Primal -/-/3/1", omitting empty spells schools altogether. Alternatively, give the name of the highest spell in each row, e.g. Cone of Cold, Lightning etc. pp. but it's not as übersichtlich* as the former.

*) easy to take in at a glance

The desire demon at the end? Use horror/paralyze/, don't let her strike first and keep pounding you with spells, or you will never recover. Strike first and pound her with spells. You can use potions in the fade, or run to the lyrium veins for mana boost. Once I used Jowan, and he was not powerful enough, but Morrigan was.

Like Luna mentioned, rush her with disabling spells and then pound her with everything you've got. If she gets the upperhand, restart and repeat.

I'm still new to the game so i'm not really sure how to use lyrium. There are different kinds to?

I don't think i have horror/paralyze. I have spider shape, rock armor, winters grasp, frost weapons, lightning, mind blast, vulnerability hex, disorient, and drain life.

I could be wrong, but I thought Morrigan starts with Horror.

I'm guessing you're around level 7/8. Spider Shape won't do enough damage at that level, and you'll really be missing Cone of Cold. Lightning and Winter's Grasp for Damage, Drain Life to heal.

If you've got a earlier save though, you might come back to this fight after you get a few more levels in and better spells.

The trick here is to know which is the real demon. Find the one that is a little different than the others and only focus on that one. Morrigan has a Spell Shield, cone of cold and the fist. Drain Life is also good. Glyph of Paralysis also works. Lyrium veins can be used to replenish mana but I don't typically need it. I do Redcliffe after the Circle.

Son, you have Horror but I don't think the Desire Demon really gives a sh•t.

Pin health and mana poultices to your quickbar 'thing', where your talents and spells are.

Hit that b•tch up with Vulnerability Hex then alternate between Winter's Grasp and Lightning. They both have short cooldown times. Don't bother wasting mana on Drain Life.

The OP might not have a lot of health poultices if he hasn't made it over to the Dalish town yet. You go through a lot in the early part of the game and there's a irregulars quest that requires 20 health poultices. If he hasn't made it to the tower either, not a lot of mana poultices either. In that case, the lyrium vein might be the best bet.

Morrigan has Horror even if you pick her up with a level 4 Warden, but the desire demon resists it even with negative mental resistance (from the hex). Same for Mind Blast.

On normal difficulty you can get through without potions by using the hex and Drain Life. The trickiest fight is not the one at the end against the ranked desire demon, but the last of the warmups. The one with the two rage demons. With Cone of Cold you could just take a few steps back and freeze all three demons; without it things are not so easy.

The rage demons are the greater threat here, their fire attacks can take you down quickly. Their melee attacks are much less dangerous, so freeze the one you will be running away from and not the one you'll be getting closer to. Hex up the Desire Demon so that you can heal if need arises, finish off the first rage demon with a staff blast and get started on the second. Move one or two steps between spells/attacks but do not move clear beyond melee range of the remaining rage demon. Watch out for Flame Blasts being telegraphed.

The end fight is a cakewalk in comparison, unless you get horrored when your health is low. Just space your heals (Drain Life) and don't forget the hex. When the desire demon creates phantom images then she won't be in a hurry to continue the fight, so wait for your spells to recharge and slurp a lyrium vein. The phantoms are lighter, more whitish than the real deal.

P.S.: this refers to a low-level fight, so no danger of things like Crushing Prison. RUNSCRIPT LEVELPARTY 8 emptied the inventory and removed all equipment from my three mages, but everyone at camp was still okay. This means you could tunnel a staff by sending someone to camp with it before downlevelling, or just buy some junk from Bodahn.

As Mike mentioned, the wherewithal for indulging in Herbalism is somewhat limited until you have access to the Dalish camp (elf root), the Circle Tower (lyrium), and the Lake Calenhad docks or Denerim (flasks).

Apart from that it wouldn't be unusual for Herbalism to be too 'sophisticated' for a Warden, like all of mine except for my nightmare solo mage who is allowed to brew as many lesser lyriums as she wants.

So, if you take the demons "deal" for blood magic, and they send Connor to Tevinter for training, does he become an abomination later in life? O_o

In the epilogue, he escapes while he is traveling with the Arl and is never seen again. i think he only goes to Tevinter if you don't do the deal with the demon.

What about buying the ingredients from another vendor or harvesting them?

I have bought unlimited lyrium from the merchant in the tower. All you need is one point in herbalism to make lesser lyrium potion and lesser health poultice. Also, the Quartermaster in Ostagar sells small quantities of it along with unlimited bottles. Elfroot too, small quantities, and you pick up some along the way.

You go through the lesser potions and lyrium bottles really fast, even with all you can pick up and make along the way. I swear Wynne just inhales the lyrium bottles, and might use 50 going through the tower. You really need Herbalism 3 and infinite supplies to make that skill shine, and by that time Wynne helps lessen the need to use herbalism.

Lesser potions give you the most bang for your buck; ingredients for higher-grade potions are much more expensive. If you reserve them for emergencies like tough boss fights then you'll find more than enough even at the lower drop rate of nightmare difficulty.

However, it's a question of tactics (in both senses of the word). Companions with guzzle tactics will guzzle; that's the price you pay for convenience. Potion quaffing can also be used as a substitute for battle tactics, but in that case you'll probably rack up some expenses... As a rule, Wynne should be able to do all necessary buffing and healing from her natural mana regen, regardless of the Warden's class, except during tough boss fights ('Andraste', Gaxkang) or when your battle plan explodes in your face.

The problem is that the in-game information regarding abilities and enemies is by and large useless, and even the wiki is somewhat limited. This means that there is no substitute for experience, and how is a warrior or rogue supposed to have got that in order to control Morrigan in the Fade? Or to make effective use of companions of other classes, and to select appropriate stats and abilities for them at level-up time? The game's auto-levelling is totally useless except for two-handers, and so are the game's tactics presets. The only way around that is to treat every clump of enemies not merely as an obstacle, but also as an opportunity to experiment, play around, and gain experience. Until such time as you slay them without breaking your stride.

YOU go through them at a rate of knots, perhaps.  Those of us with a bit of tactical clout (i.e, be a sneaky bugger) do not.  Herbalism is a useful tool for simpletons to fall back on.

Well, it would normally be against my ethics to make judgements about someone based on one forum post. Then again, the homeboy is struggling with the Desire Demom so...

You obviously do not appreciate the moral dilemmas I face when trying to make helpful forum posts (incidentally, my post is the most helpful).

There is no moral dilemma involved in denigrating people as homeboys or simpletons simply because they are beginners and have to struggle with the same difficulties as we all did at that time.

On the other hand, things are different if - after a long time of playing - someone still has no better advice than to push the "I win anyway" button of potion quaffage. Sure, it can get you through a lot of difficulties in the short run but in the long run it's no substitute for learning how to fight.

P.S.: For me, the Grim Reaper brought that lesson home forcefully. My level-25 mage had all the normal, greater and potent health/lyrium potions that she had found in Origins (minus three normal health) and she still failed the first two tries. When she won the third time the whole team had used only two dozen potions in all.
