I think it's alright if an NPC is not able to judge us by how we look, I honestly think it would be pretty hard to implement such minute details, but then again, there could be nods from NPCs for carrying staves and certain weapons I suppose. But when it comes to things like Blood Magic however, that's definitely something an NPC should not be able to overlook.
In DA 2, there were many who noticed what you were when you used Magic, but not so much when you used Blood Magic. You can use Blood Magic while fighting Wilmod and Cullen won't even ask about the magic part in the least.
Then in DA:O, there are situations where people just knew that you're a mage like the Mother in the Redcliffe chantry. So yeah, overall, things have been pretty inconsistent and I'd like them to stick to one route.
My suggestion for the "identification rules" would be this:
- NPC identifies Mage PC only on magic use.
- NPC identifies Blood Mage PC/companion only on Blood Magic use.
- NPC does not know whether the PC/companion is Mage/Blood Mage/Spirit healer/Whatever related to magic, until actual use of these talents, or being told about the talents by the PC.
P.S.- Remove AI from your topic title as it is misleading.

that's... not an AI.
Technically, it is a form of artificial intelligence.
