If any of you all have been fans of the Action genera of NWN, you probably are familiar with Legends of Chance (1, 2, and or 3.)

LoC3 shut down about a year ago sadly, and their forums have now officially closed as well it seems.

I have seen many good ones come and go over the years, and now after being involved in the development of one over the last few years, I have more respect than ever for what it takes to create one, and especially one that is novel and pushes the envelop.

LoC3 was certainly that. I received copies of all 3 versions, and was blown away by the level of building and scripting, and everything else that went into it. With DM Shine's blessing we integrated some of it's content into our world (and probably will more), both for our benefit and to help preserve some of what was, but to merge fully was impossible (at least for me) given the degree of development we already had (10+ years) and the degree they had.

It is sad to me that so much time and effort, and amazing quality of content could not sustain itself. But I have to say to Shine and everyone else who was involved in it's development, cheers to you all. May the memory burn bright, and your efforts bode favorably for you in the future. And who knows what the future may hold.

Much respect.

Lazarus Magni

I would of liked to see what it was like but oh well.

I can't believe it has been almost 3 years since the close of the server. It saddened me to see it go. I truly wish it could resurface in some way, unfortunately since then I have not had the heart to play NWN. I dont think that anyone could come close to incorporating all of the magic that LOC had. The god level system was amazing and made building characters so much fun.

So what sort of features did it have? Anything worth exploring/duplicating/enhancing elsewhere? If the server is closed do the original builders or those currently carrying the torch condone a release of the modules?

Indeed. We run one a truly epic server, but I agree, the death of this server was a true loss to the NWN community, and all gamers who enjoy this type of play. Although our server is epic, there is a lot of things LoC3 did that we did not. And it is truly sad this loss of diversity for a player experience has manifested. :(

So why do you care? Last I knew you didn't care about this genera of gaming...

P.S. I am not whatifIDied.... I have no clue who that player is, but I do feel the loss of action servers. One of the best generas I feel came out of NWN. Sad to see the decline of them. And no! This is not an endorsement for the world I am involved with, just an endorsement for the the genera in general. To hell with the BS SX servers. We put it down for real (and by we I don't me us, or the server I am involved with, but I mean the genera in general. From Funky's PoA, To the lost LoC, or Badlands, or many others.) Yes guess what? Some of us are still here, and some of us are still going strong, and for only one reason. That being, because some folks (players) are interested in what we (including the players) are doing.

When I first started playing NWN I started on Aventia when Ralt was owner, and then I went to LOC2, and had a TON of fun on that server. When LOC3 started declining I went to Aventia 3 for a bit. Then when LOC3 officially shut down I stopped playing all together because even though all players who were active were given a copy of the module, I could never get it to work properly.

Did someone hack your account, this does not sound like your prior post.

What is not working properly? With details I may be able to help.

The database is missing. It was a highly DB driven world. And no, nobody hacked my account.

Yeah without the database, having the mod was useless

I've often wondered what would be done if I died, in regards to my PW Server.

I wouldn't want my players to be deprived of the server in the event of my passing, but at the same time I don't want to release it while my main server is still alive and kicking - as it would just encourage a dozen clones to pop up over night.

Kinda makes me wana setup a gaming escrow site.

People register -

Upload module content and all resources needed for re-creating the server from scratch.

Create one or more contacts to pass the module to in the event of your death.

Setup a Dead Man switch system : (Regular E-mail that gets sent to you every week, fortnight, month, semi-annually, annually etc

When x amount of e-mails are ignored / not acted on (activation link clicked) - It makes the system thing you are dead- then it releases the content to X Contacts in sequence.

I've heard of companies doing something similar - with post-mortem video messages etc

the server that would never die,

designed like a virus, to replicate to new hosts when one dies,

had better be a fun server.

I actually posted my post thinking that this topic was about a server admin having died or something.

Still sorta an important topic I guess - the community does lose out on PW Servers, when their owners die - it would be nice to have a way of passing on the PW Server as part of an estate.

In other things - I would love to see some sort of decentralized server.

However I think such a thing would be nigh impossible (highly difficult) to develop for NWN.

Would need to keep content in sync across all nodes of the server.

Route players to the server which meets X requirement : eg - maybe we want to direct players to the node which has the most players on it.

Eg: 20 Nodes, all of them has 0 players, except for 1 which has one player logged in. A second player comes along, joins the network - and gets directed to the server which has one player on it, making it two.

If that server goes offline, the players get booted they rejoin the IP address or maybe even portal'd to another server, but it routes to the next available server that is up.

This would perpetrate the 'notion' of the players joining the same server, with the same content, etc

The only problem would be around Local vars and state within the module for quests - but nwnx has already provided a pseudo solution.

nwnx already hooks the SetLocal commands.

It could conceivably be possible to have SetLocal commands be replicated across a network of nwservers.

When a quest status is updated on one server, it gets updated across all servers.

Alternatively - the module could just be developed with a decentralized nature in mind, and have this replication process built from scratch in the form of a new nwnx plugin?

@ ehye_khandee

I am not sure why you ruffeled my feathers so bad that night. My apologies to you for that. You are still, umm how do I put this nicely.... kinda proving my point, for immortalizing my words in quotes. But whatever, I have said harsh things in the past, it's part of my M.O. I have no filter sometimes, and just tell people how I really feal. It is what it is, some people hate it, some respect it. So be it either way.

Be well, game on.

Friend Lazarus Magni,

I don't filter much either. It wins me no popularity contests but basically I don't care about making nice at the expense of truth/honesty.

There are no shortage of folks who don't much like me nor my posts. *shrugs* No matter to me. I just try to dispense solid lore.

Apology accepted. We are good Lazarus.

Please, everyone, note, I'm not here to ruffle feathers, just distribute hard-core lore where such is needed/requested. What I write does not always read like 'a letter to mom' - but it is packed full of good lore for those who wish to avail themselves of it to any degree. I'm just a busy guy, in a boat load of pain daily (disabled), who is managing and building a NWN server (to help distract myself from the pain). Yesterday I weeded about 3 sq meters of my garden space, and spaded another 1.3 meters... today, I can hardly move. I'll be at the keyboard eating anti-inflammatory pills all day and trying to NOT bite people's heads off in casual encounters.

In my condition, I think DAILY about transitioning the server, when the time comes. It is my good fortune to have Eriniel as my cohort in this NWN server project, she being much younger, in reasonably good health and having family I figure she's likely to outlive me by many decades. It is possible the server will carry on, if not, *shrugs* I'll have had my fun building it and learning as I went.

Back to the last bit of topic, I think the links in those two articles and the two articles themselves should be of use to anyone thinking of passing a server or other IP on to be maintained after the IP owners passing.

Best wishes to you all.

Be well. Game on.

Indeed you missed out Icy, LoC (Chance) 1, 2, and 3 were special.

Cheers to DM Shine.

P.S. @ ehye_khandee apology accepted too.

what was the database for, the character you had created?
