Throughout DA we've only been able to romance companions which, personally speaking I think is a bit unnecessary and silly. Is it impossible that someone who isn't a good fighter could have a relationship? I liked the feature in ME2 and 3 and there have been plenty of non-companions I would of liked to have romanced (no not Cullen!) but what do you think?

I don't care if the romances are party members or NPCs, as long as there's an equal number of genders, they're open to everyone, and they have a comparable amount of content.

I think it's an idea worth pursuing.  Though the NPC should be one th player gets to interact with a lot anyway.

I fully support non-companion romances. I mean really out of two whole countries we shouldnt have to just choose out of the nine people that follow us around.

But if the person isn't following you around, then the person has to be someplace you keep going back to. I suppose this will work in DAI; there's a home base, right? It worked in ME because they were either on the ship or on the Citadel.

I agree they would have to be someone you see and interact with alot like an advisor or something. Important npcs would be good as well like Empress Celene just for an example.

If Cullen isn't a companion, for me, this would be the next best thing. I might have a meltdown otherwise.

This is what Cullen and Scribe girl will be, is my assumption.

Agreed.  I could easily see the two of them particularly playing an LI role given that they seem like they will be prominent advisors in the Keep.  I also wonder if this means that they might also expand the romance options to 6 instead of 4.  I know that they had said that they weren't planning on expanding romance options, but that was before the release delay, right?  Could we have 4 companion LI's and 2 NPC LI's, perhaps?

I wouldn't mind, the more options the better.

And these are exactly the two I want to romance most :) So I'm all for romancing NPCs!

Meant to add (sorry, should have multi-quoted) that I agree with the above bolded and feel it should go without saying!

I am always for more options!

Though I'd be sad not being able to take them around with me. I guess I'd end up creating excuses to keep going back to the base. :P I can imagine some frustrated/teasing remarks from the other companions once they catch on.

I'm not really into the non-companion romance idea. I don't see how they could possibly have the same amount of interaction, especially since they've said they're making party banter more interactive this time. There are just so many more opportunities for commentary and plot relevance with companions. Even if they gave NPCs the same amount of dialog specifically about the relationship, they still come across as being less important overall and less developed as an individual. I'd rather they just made more companions into love interests. There are always companions each time that people would like to romance and don't get a chance to. That seems like a better use of resources to me, personally.

Not a fan of npc companion romances personally as I feel all the companion content on top of the romance specific stuff is massively important in the experience.

I want a romancable NPC that is very similar in mannerisms to Samantha Traynor, however is available for romance to both men and women. I preferred Traynor over Kelly but was disappointed when I couldn't romance her with male shep.  She was just so refreshing. a non combatant romance. even Steve had seen combat.

I like the idea because it makes the world feel bigger.  And no matter how dire things get, there's someone out there to come home to, or meet up with, who you can talk things out with, get a non-group perspective of events on and forget the world for a while.

No pressure, Bioware :)

I like non-companion romances, but not as much as companion ones. I just want them to have a fairly equal level of material. There were times in my Steve/Samantha romances where I felt like it wasn't nearly as fleshed out as it could have been compared to Garrus (who had the best romance of the ages, hands down, my space boyfriend ilu so). Garrus had certain extra touches to all his little dialogues throughout the game that made it special. Samantha/Steve didn't because most of their cut-screen convos happened before the romance was available and after you only got a few one-liners when you clicked on them.

Note: I'm using ME instead of DA because there's no DA references to use.

So, if DA does the non-companion romance, I'd like to see it flourish much the same way as a companion romance. I don't want to feel cheated by it. (I felt so cheated by Traynor's romance. So cheated. Not enough material and I liked her so much).

I think if they do go this route, and at this point I'm hoping they are, the DA team has the benefit of being able to learn from the ME3 feedback .Steve and Sam were pretty well received and a lot of people indicated a desire to learn more about them. After each major mission we should be able to hear their thoughts/opinions on how things went down, and even if they can't accompany us, I see no reason they couldn't request that we go on a personal side mission for them. It will be interesting to see how something like this will progress without an friendship/rivarly/approval rating attached...unless the approval ratings will extend to NPC's? NPC's approving/disapproving and treating you accordingly? (thats probably a whole other mess and discussion though haha)

I'm not a big fan of NPC romances. It's just never quite the same as adventuring with your LI, going through thick and thin, seeing each other at your best and your worst. You can't do that with an NPC. Yeah, they're there when you get home, but how are you supposed to let them be part of what you've been through?

"Maker, NPC, am I glad you're here. Just yesterday we were facing this dragon and...heh, it was, like...man, and Varric just...I- I, hum...I guess you had to be there, he..."

*awkward silence ensues*

"That is wonderful, Inquisitor. I...uhm...sorted these papers for you."

*more awkward silence*

That was my problem with the ME3 NPC romances as well. Sam was cool and all, but...so very non-relevant. (I may also have just been pissed that of COURSE the gay romances were the NPCs...)

Samantha was relevant. She was better at info gathering than Liara the Shadow Broker was. :P
