I haven't heard anyone saying stereotypes must be engaged in. These characters have had lives, experiences and relationships before they met us. They have opinions and attractions. Yes, characters are presumed straight unless they declare otherwise, therefore it would be nice for LI's to let us know where they stand. I'd prefer to be able to flirt with anyone, if they turn me down, fine, then we know where they stand.

then i just hope the straight one wont be one of the two characters in my already viewfinder !(i don't think i could bear a turn down !!) although i would enjoy hitting on them shamelessly just for fun playfully and why not to stir up some jealousy elsewhere if its possible~ ,what can i say i love angsty romances huhuhu

I like having characters with defined sexualities, its much more realistic and appealing for me to have being gay in common with a character, it speaks to me more and makes me feel more included.  And also knowing the bisexual dudes are still going to be available is just icing on the cake.

but the real fear in this is to be attracted to the straight one more ! :/ or not finding the gay one physically appealing  (since they did very odd caracteristics to most characters this time !)....thats what worry me a little (but i will also go for the gay one first ofc !) ...this and finding out cullen wont even be a compagnion while going on quests ....urh what a decepetion....

To be fair, with defined sexualities (i.e. not playersexual,) this is going to happen to people of all persuasions. I'm sure there were many straight guys who would have loved to have dated Traynor, straight women who were dying to romance Cortez etc.

I still think having defined sexualities is the best way to go though. I just feel it's a little bit more realistic.

All bisexual LI's have defined sexualities.  I've not seen a single playersexual LI in any Bioware game.  If Merrill said, "I am straight" to a male PC and "I am gay" to a female PC, that would be playersexual.  However, not declaring her sexuality from the rooftops, but still being able to be romanced by both male and female PCs does not equal playersexuality.

In DA: O, 4 out of 4 LIs had clearly defined sexuality (two by voicing it and two by gender gating).  In DA 2, three of the LIs had clearly defined sexuality (two by voicing it and one by gender gating).  I don't understand why people think that, if 7 out of 9 characters had clearly defined sexualities, the last two would be "playersexual" despite any evidence supporting this.

I never even mentioned any of the dragon age games. Are you just looking for something to argue about? Cause I really don't want to.

I'm sorry.  Maybe I misunderstood then.  Which Bioware game had playersexual LI's?

None of them. I used the term playersexual because it isn't a defined sexuality, it relies on the gender of the player.

Right, but that was kind of my point.  Merrill and Fenris might be playersexual.  But they also might be bisexual.  And since the other 7 LIs have set sexuality, it stands to reason in my opinion, that Merrill and Fenris are also probably bisexual.  That was my point.  So out of the 9 LI's in DA, 3 have been straight and 6 have been bisexual.  That's a variety of set sexualities.  I'm not arguing.  I'm just making a point.

I know. I agree. The only character I feel you could make the argument for possibly being playersexual is Anders. Just because he mentions that Karl was his lover if you are playing a male Hawk, whilst only saying he was a friend to a female Hawk. Even then there's nothing to suggest that he isn't bisexual.

I'm sorry I kinda snapped at you. That wasn't my intent at all. I just got a little defensive because I thought you were putting words into my mouth.

No worries.

Anders is confirmed as bisexual though:  http://dgaider.tumbl...tions-on-anders

i know ! i mean this thread was about requesting 'truly gay' characters ! so it was like my fantasy to be able to romance a gay character !! its gonna be very enriching to discover something so new (for me at least) and it does make the character personality around his friends and his whole surroundings more real i'd say..

Oh, hadn't read that. Thanks!

In game, Anders certainly comes across closer to playersexual than either Merrill or Fenris do though.

Yeah, I think they really botched his dialogue with FemHawke about Karl.  Combine that with the fact that he mentioned ladies in DA: A and the fact that he hits on the male PC and it was the perfect storm to make him an easy target for complaints.

To speak to the idea of gay only LI's, I'm totally happy to see them included.  I just don't want to see them relegated to NPC romances (which with Cullen as an NPC romance seems unlikely for gay males, at least).

Hmm, if I had to guess at the gay male romance in DA:I I'd probably say it could be DHMG, Solas possibly being bisexual and maybe Cullen as the straight LI. Assuming there are to be 6 LIs with 1 each being straight, gay and bisexual. So I think (if i'm right) that the gay LI will be a fully fledged companion. With maybe the straight women drawing the short straw again (again, assuming that non-party member LIs will have less content.)

Yeah, I suspect that exact same break down for the men.  Cullen's really  popular though, so I wonder if he will be bisexual instead.  With the talk about a character struggling with their sexuality, I keep wondering if that's referring to Cullen's sexual awakening (that sounds kind of odd when I say it like that, but you get my point, I hope) now that he's out of the templars.

Every elf companion has been a bisexual LI at this point, so that's why I'm suspecting Solas still though.  I'm definitely crossing my fingers for DHMG to be the gay romance.  I'd be over the moon happy.  If my pre-game favorite is not only an LI, but also the first openly gay male companion ever in a Bioware game?  that would be amazing.

You could very well be right about Cullen. There is a LOT of support for Cassandra being a s/s romance as well.

The more I think about it, I actually wouldn't be shocked if all LIs are either bi or gay. With no straight characters at all.

Where in the world are people pulling this "struggling with sexuality" thing? I have not yet seen David or any other dev talk about that at all.

I think they confirmed that there will be straight, bisexual, and gay LI's.  Most people are assuming that it's a 2/2/2 split, but others have pointed out that it could be a 1/3/1 split if one gender has 2 bisexual options and the other one has 1/1/1.  That would still give every gender/sexuality combination multiple choices as well as having a variety of sexualities.

I wouldn't be surprised to see two bisexual companions, one bisexual male companion, one gay male companion, and one straight male NPC.  Although, as you pointed out, this would mean that straight females would get a slightly less equal share.

I wish I had the quote handy.  To be honest, I'm not even sure where it originated exactly.  I hope I haven't been perpetuating another BSN urban legend!

Most of the time when I ask people about it, they have no source for me. And usually it all leads back to Chari...
