So...just to be clear...you think Bioware is in danger of creating a gay orgy island?

This has always been such a strange thread...

No I don't think he does.  He was giving an example of what would be shoving it down his throat because I asked.  He's already stated he does not think bioware will handle it badly.  Which means if he considers that handling it badly, then obviously he does not think bioware is going to do that.

Then why bother to say anything about it at all?

If I was confident that Bioware would never force me to play as a llama and eat people to level up, why would I come onto the forums and say "Hey Bioware is great, and I like that they let you play the game the way you want, but man, if they made me play a llama who has to eat people? That'd be going too far!"

See how ridiculous that is?

He came into the GAY thread, said: "I like that Bioware lets people be gay, and I know it'll never force me to BE gay, but man if they forced me to be gay, that'd be too much for me!" This sort of needlessly hyper-defensive position only stirs people up and puts them on the defensive.

EDIT: I'm not saying he can't post here, but why not just stop at "Hey, it's really cool Bioware is doing this! I'm happy for you, LGBT Dragon Age fans!" Why qualify it by adding that paragraph where he goes on about a "too gay" hypothetical that he later says he's not actually worried would happen anyway?

Yeah, I get that. Theres just so much strange about how people phrase that stuff. Mostly, that being made to witness male/male relationships to any degree is somehow similar to have something 'forced' down your throat, which, is not the same as -but also not far off from-implying that you are literally being assaulted by the content. Its a bizarre and vaguely violent analogy in my mind, a colloquialism that doesn't pay much attention to its own wording.

I mean, a gay orgy island being your standard for content 'forced' on you is  a farther off line then mosts sure. But that makes it all the stranger to bring up, since clearly that is an imaginary line in the sand that will nvr be crossed.

It is worth noting however that there are entire dragon age locations devoid of LGBT content.

:( Did you romance Jacob or Thane? WHO DID THIS TO YOU!?

By "shoved down my throat" I meant it as a literal term as in "forced me to to do it"

So you were wanting an example of what is too far for me.....If I go into a location and everyone there is a gay male and I get constantly hit on and see guys kissing and stuff and I am forced to go and see/do this every play through.  If I play a game and my character is gay and I have love scenes like with Shepard and Kaiden, but its forced on me "shoved down my throat" I take issue with that.

I am not gay so that is not something I want to see or have an experience with.  If that content is there, but OPTIONAL and you don't get some amazing item for doing it then thats fine put it in the game you won't hear a peep from me.  Enjoy it all you want.

You see, this is something I have never experienced in a game, I don't know of a game where you are forced to be gay and have gay relationships. Unless we are talking about some sort of gay porn flash game thing, which we aren't.

yet I hear "shoved down my thought" allot and this sort of implies that this is not what the line is for the majority of people who say this.

I have played a few games where the pc is straight and has romances and intimate moments with woman that I have no choice in. I wasn't particularly bothered by this but I guess I can see why some would be.

If there was a game like that with a gay pc though would that be a problem for you?  I guess that wouldn't be a role playing game which is what we are talking about here but surely the solution is to just not buy it if it bothers you. I feel like a huge fuss would be kicked up about such a game though, despite this obvious solution.

i think I was very understanding and respectful in my first post in the thread (which was made today)

I very plainly said I take no issues with how people want to live their life.  I don't see why I put walls/defenses up with people.  In my mind I never attacked anyone.  Just shared my opinion on a line of thought that a developer of the games was on.

And you. Would you mind taking your buzz kill attitude somewhere else? Some of us are looking forward to the romance content in these games and aren't interested in having someone coming into the gay romance thread to criticize those of us who enjoy this feature. If you're that disillusioned with love, maybe a romance thread isn't the place for you to hang out.

Also, no more of this noble=straight. We ladies want a noble gay lady.

Yes! And a noble gay man, please :(

I think I'm gonna love Dorian and IB (and hopefully Solas?) they seem so interesting, but... Alistair... Cullen... oh, man!

Not complaining about current options, I'm quite excited about IB (finally a big, strong guy), but would be cool if we get the noble cute guy too :P

What is the guy in this game? Dorian?  I don't want him telling me my ass is nice or he'd like for me to bend him over or something constantly if I choose to have him in my party.

Constant sexual objectification is not something I would enjoy that much either. Maybe a bit now and again though.  :P

Still though it's about severity and keeping a character realistic. Isabela flirts with you quite a bit no matter who you are, would you be bothered by a male character like that? Do you feel like the fact that it may make you feel uncomfortable is more important than the integrity of the character?

btw, i'm not attacking you or your views. I hope it doesn't seem that way as I do not like to discuss matters in such a fashion and find those who do so rather tiresome.

I don't know if I would really equate Sera and Josephine, on "femme"ness or any other matter. They are just as different as any other character is from each other or from Cassandra. I don't really think any group can reasonably claim the short end of the stick if the only grounds are "I don't like these particular characters" even when they're all unique from each other and probably perfectly good characters. (certainly from what we know we can't comment on the quality of writing yet, but bioware has a pretty consistent record with past DA companions if you ask me)

On further examination, that was probably an excessively glass half empty (to the point of poking a hole in the glass) interpretation of what you said, as I didn't see all the Cassandra gushing on the previous page or afterwards. I'll just say, I get if you think Cassandra is something special, but try not to diminish the other characters while you do so. It felt like that to me.

Diminishing the other characters was not my intent, and I am sorry if it came off that way.  As I stated in that post, I love the other female LIs.  All I said is that no other female LI is like her in those particular ways.  Femme is not an insult in my book, and I wasn't trying to use it as one.  I know this is shaky ground, because all the characters are obviously very unique and shouldn't be boiled down to broad categories, but I was just trying to explain why she appealed to me in particular.

I also am not trying to say that we're getting the short end of the stick.  I've said in the past that not liking the options available is not the same as getting fewer or no options than everyone else.  But I'm still disappointed, I still have feelings on the matter, and I only posted about it because somebody else mentioned feeling the same way.

That was my whole point.  I don't take any issues with anything as long as I am not forced.  I'm saying I don't care.

At the end of the day if the game bothers me I just won't buy/play it.

Why is your understanding of love any more real than mine? Who said I didn't like the romance content? You're making a lot of assumptions and want to remove me for my opinion. Sounds pretty hypocritical if you ask me.

I dunno but I now have the strange urge to play a people eating llama in a game o.o

You do have a point though.  Is why I asked him what was that line in the first place.  I was curious about how that thinking goes.  Is a chance to understand it, learn about it.  So I'm curious.

Is possible it was an attempt at baiting.

Could also be him expressing fears of future content due to insecurities.

Really lots of reasons.

I was bothered by Isabella hitting on me too.  Not from a orientation or looks standpoint, but from a whoa shes the "town bike" stand point.  I didn't want any of that either.  + You never go where your friends have been and that was Alistar's  (that was a joke)

I might not bring a male character who acted like isabella with hitting on me, but no if thats just how he is through and through no matter what I'm fine with that.  Also as a guy growing up you talk to your male friends in those ways also so its kind of "normal" (depending on the personality type)

I don't feel attacked at all and I have a pretty thick skin...especially on the internet.  You can say whatever you want to me, no worries.

I think the reason that seemed to strike a chord for so many may be because LGBT people have long been forced to play as straight characters and engage in straight content, often while not having access to an alternative. When people say they are 'fine with it as long as it isn't forced on them', its actually kinda a display of privilege, not acknowledging how often others have been put in that exact same/reverse situation. It also tends to fall in line with the idea of 'I'm fine with it as long as I don't have to see it', which is a common line used to imply that its fine if you're gay, ya know, in the privacy of your own home, but for gods sake, keep it hidden, its something to be ashamed of. So, many LGBT people are quite uncomfortable with that phrasing because whether that was the intention of your words or not (I'm inclined to think it was not btw), that is sort of like an often repeated gut punch to many in the queer community.

Well that's all I wanted to know.  ;)

I think they way you said a few things caused people to jump to conclusions which is understandable and we can't all phrase everything perfectly. I think others have already explained the problematic views you seemed like you might have been expressing but It's pretty clear now that this isn't the case so kwl.  :D

Well I think now we are getting into more personality types than we are on sexual preference.

I don't expect to go to lunch and see two men or two women making out....I don't expect to see a guy and a woman making out either.  You should be respectful in public of others as its not yours...its everyones.  Aside from a quick peck on the cheek I wouldn't sit there and do things like that in front of people gay or straight....especially if they had little kids with them.  IMO thats more of a keep your private business private than it is only do it if its in this situation with these specific sexes.

I can't speak to being forced to put up with content/situations that directly go against who and how I am as a person, aside from saying I know it would be very annoying and ****** me off.....reinforced by the fact that there are no alternatives to go to.

I have not had much contact with the gay community aside from being turned down by a girl I had a huge crush on :crying:  so I am not aware of how I am being perceived from my word choices.  I appreciate you saying this though and would appreciate it if any preexisting opinions about me because of what others have said and done are ignored as I do not meant the things I say in that way and I'm just trying to express myself the best I can.

What about holding hands?  Would two people of the same sex holding hands bother you?  Does a man and a woman doing so bother you?  Holding hands seems a pretty tame and usually accepted form of affection.  What about overhearing two people of the same sex tell each other they love each other in an obviously romantic way?

The issue here being we all draw lines on what we consider acceptable, and do you draw the same lines for both orientations?

I would probably do a double take if it was 2 guys and be just a little jealous if it was 2 women....I know they don't like me....but I like them!  No, I wouldn't care though, Let them do what they want to do and I hope they enjoy their life and its how they want it.  In my mind theres a lot of stuff to worry and care about in the world.  Who those 2 random people I just walked by in the mall want to have sex with isn't one of them.

I am not quite sure how I would feel if i had a young child though.  I'm just being honest.

I should further say while there are some gay people where I live....it isn't very common here so its not something that you see often at all or is just hidden or I don't pay enough attention to notice.

If you think that two people of the same gender holding hands is inappropriate for a child's eyes, then you're being honestly homophobic.

Not really sure.  I know I would want my kid to sheltered and innocent for as long as possible.  Not once they were in middle/high school....but for the first few years.  I don't know I can't really say.  I would have to be in that situation to really know how I feel.  I do know I don't want them knowing about any sexuality (of any kind) before they are old enough to know and mind what they are saying in front of others and know when its time to be proper and not talk about certain subjects in certain situations.
