Wait, what comment? I'm seriously confused. Finding it amusing that the guys in that picture look like a bunch of Final Fantasy characters has somehow morphed into thoughtless comments about race and masculinity. I never brought up race or masculinity at all. It's funny to me from a pop culture perspective.
Look, you seem to have gotten offended by something I said (including my attempts to defuse the situation). I'll accept your friendly advice and just ask if we can move on from this because I really think it's all coming from misunderstanding.
But the image itself is grounded in, and the product of, harmul assumptions about gender and race. You can ignore that, but it's true.
I mean, the image isn't even really accurate, Japan is a very diverse culture with a lot of different fashions. Plus, you're comparing images of middle-aged men to photos of guys in their teens-early twenties.
Also, it's true of literally everywhere. I could make an image that says "America Then: rugged cowboys. America Now: overweight rednecks at walmart".
Or how about "America Then: native american tribespeople. America Now: mass grave."?
That one might actually give me a chuckle.
