Racism is super lulzy.

Also, loving the implication that "feminine" men deserve mockery. Genius.

Oh, just relax for a minute.  Your righteous fury is well placed normally, but you really have to tucker yourself out.  Pick your battles because this one really isn't worth it.

Honestly, I don't see the loss of rigid adherence to super macho gender roles to be a horrible thing in either Japan or Sweden.

Guess I'm way too old fashioned.  After I cut my Razor Ramon wannabe mullet at the age of 10 (I'm 25 now so I kept that thing way too long) my hair even though curly has always been kinda like Steve Rogers...  maybe too normal.

Chris Hemsworth looks better with his Thor hair though.

Oh lord, you're one of those "the flamboyant gays make the rest of us look bad" guys, aren't you.

There's room for everyone.  I'm calling dibs on the "Sweden then" boys.

The jpop boys do pretty much look exactly like Final Fantasy characters, though.  Did video games influence the style or did the style influence the video games?

No.  I'm not at all.  Which is why your fury is misplaced right now.  Take a deep breath, because there's really no issue here at all.  It's funny from a pop culture perspective.

The popularity of characters like these:

Gundam_Wing_Pilots.jpg

Came long before your typical FF and Jpop look.

I believe it's more that the style influenced the video games. They've had similar styles since the early-mid 80s.

Maybe you should take a minute to consider how your thoughtless comments might be perceived?

You seem intent on furnishing me with 'friendly advice', so consider this me returning the favour.

Hey, Gundam Wing! Ah, good times.  ^_^

I really want the team that did the animation for Gundam Unicorn to re-do Wing with the same VAs and stuff.  That show has NOT aged well at all.

Can I also just say Mockingword and Mort...  you guys have adorable avatars.

Wait, what comment?  I'm seriously confused.  Finding it amusing that the guys in that picture look like a bunch of Final Fantasy characters has somehow morphed into thoughtless comments about race and masculinity.  I never brought up race or masculinity at all.  It's funny to me from a pop culture perspective.

Look, you seem to have gotten offended by something I said (including my attempts to defuse the situation).  I'll accept your friendly advice and just ask if we can move on from this because I really think it's all coming from misunderstanding.

If that's the only alternative to "ignoring offensive things", then sure.

Yeah. After I watched 00(my favorite of the Gundam series) I popped in Gundam Wing and was like "Wow, this looks old".

See, and I never knew that this even existed.  I'm not really familiar with japanese pop culture outside of JRPGs.  Good to know.

But the image itself is grounded in, and the product of, harmul assumptions about gender and race. You can ignore that, but it's true.

I mean, the image isn't even really accurate, Japan is a very diverse culture with a lot of different fashions. Plus, you're comparing images of middle-aged men to photos of guys in their teens-early twenties.

Also, it's true of literally everywhere. I could make an image that says "America Then: rugged cowboys. America Now: overweight rednecks at walmart".

Or how about "America Then: native american tribespeople. America Now: mass grave."?

That one might actually give me a chuckle.

I always like SEED and SEED Destiny more.  Except when Kira in the first is all whiny about fighting.

The original Gundam came out in 1979.  Wing was from around 95 I think.

Okay, fine.  Just remember that I'M not comparing anything.  I didn't make OR post the picture.  Look, I've been working for hours and I'm cranky and tired.  This is my refuge from that stuff, so I really don't feel like getting into this.  There was absolutely no bad intentions from my single comment that I found it amusing that they looked like Final Fantasy characters, so can we leave it at that?  Or, I should say, I'm leaving it at this, so hopefully you are fine with that because I'm not continuing on with this conversation at 1:30 in the morning.  If you are still feeling sore about it tomorrow, feel free to PM me and we can discuss it further tomorrow.

ETA:  Yes, I know that it is literally true of everywhere.  That's why I didn't take it as offensive.  Cultures change over time and that is amusing.
