i don't know if we can propose something that can be considered by devs at this approching stade of the release but oooh now that i think about it , i wonder if Dorian gonna be the flirty one like open about his sexuality ,or more reserved ~ or if he have some spicy stories of love affairs with merchand boys and magister's sons in rented rooms huhu~~ though i wonder how he's gonna out about it ...maybe like Anders and just say 'if it doesnt bother you that i've been with men only men..'

i know that his very smart and pretty sure of himself so he might be open about it , i look forward the banters with the rest of the party !!! am sure he's gonna tease some Solas more than once :P and be teased by Iron bull more than twice x) but i think he gonna like hanging with him and Sera ! also i wonder how if Cole gonna ask him some innocent questions about it *can't stop giggling* i hope i can click on him and pet his head from time to time just to make sure he's okay ~~ such a cute baby haha nooothing to do with the topic i~~ knoow x) but he's like a sweet candy in the middle of...all this dust !

oh ! one other thing that poped in my head ! i'd really like if Varric shared something about Hawke relationship if it was gay, with a gay inquisior if he romance Dorian or Sera! it can be something serious or funny !

Just sticking my nose in to reiterate that the biggest thing for me is that whatever word people use, it's should (almost) never be a noun and (almost) always an adjective with a noun attached. Hence:

Spoiler

ANYWAY, back on topic:

I'm ridiculously excited for/curious about Dorian and Sera. I'm gonna have such a hard time not spoiling myself terribly the minute the game comes out because I'm gonna want to dive head first into all the lovely fanart and story sharing about these two and I play much slower than most.

Those few days between the US and EU release date are going to be torture for me. Among lots of other things, I really want to see how BioWare have written their gay characters in DA:I but I also want to discover it for myself.

I just want to pop in and say that I don't find the term "queer" to represent me at all.  I actually cringe every time I hear someone use it.  Perhaps it's an age thing.  I was a young gay kid in the 80's and 90's when "queer" was just an insult.  There was no appropriation around the term, so it was just 100% insulting.  I understand that the reappopriation of the work comes from academics, but Judith Butler and other queer theorists were still developing these ideas while I was in high school and early college, so I guess I had already been conditioned against the term at that point.

However, the people who I see using "queer" are mostly millennials, who were just born when Queer Theory was being developed and were able to have this term already exist as they began to better understand their sexuality.  I've not seen very many people in their mid-30's+ using "queer".  Of course some people in that demographic use it, but it's not a terribly popular term.  At least in my experience.  I understand why people use it to describe themselves, but I really really dislike it when they describe me with the term, as I'd never self-identify as "queer".

Just another perspective on the matter.

As a fellow mid-30s member of the LGBT community, let's just say you're not alone on this one.  Growing up, for me, the word "queer" was snarled at me right before someone tried to beat me up.  I appreciate also re-appropriation of words, and I'm glad that the younger generation is finding more of their own identity.  On the forums I don't have an issue being called/using the term queer, but offline, I usually hear it in negative terms.  It could be more of a regional thing; I've seen folks from Europe, Canada and other countries use the word queer to describe the LGBT community, but rarely here in the States

And this is perfectly fine ! It has a lot to do with a changing of the times I think, my generation has chosen to embrace the word, but for your generation it was generally used as an insult. I can totally understand why you wouldn't want to be called that.

Let me put it this way:  If someone in the gay community called me a queer, then I'd know where they were coming from.  I wouldn't take any offense, and I'd just move on.  If someone was straight, hung out in the gay community, and called me queer, I would make sure to listen to their tone of voice.  Some stranger off of the street?  That would make me very uncomfortable and would certainly require some context.

I'll bet.  :(

You might want to avoid the gaming news sites when the game comes out.  Both supporters and detractors of LGBT romances aren't going to be exactly quiet about this one.

That's fair enough, it does mostly depend on context and the person. While it wouldn't offend me (assuming they didn't call me 'one of them queers' or something similar, which does happen) I can still totally see why it would be offensive to the older generation.

And I'll probably pull out of here about a week before release, and I won't be back until I finish it. If there is a fuss going on when I return, I just won't post until it blows over.

Yeah, I'm going to have to do like a Social Media and Gaming Site blackout for 3 days. I'd hate to be on Twitter and encounter a storm of praise or hate over a certain feature.

I'm used to it at this stage, I generally have to ignore most of the internet between US & EU release dates, particularly when its a BioWare game.

Hopefully, I'll be still playing a couple of the games that come out in Sept or Oct so I'll be distracted.

Ah man.  36 years old and I'm the "older generation"?  I find aging to be offensive!

I really don't like the word queer, and I cringe a bit whenever I see it used.

It feels really outdated, like something from my grandparents time. I don't think I've ever even heard them use it, let alone someone from a younger generation. That coupled with it being generally considered a degrading term back when it was common, I don't see why it's become so frequently used here on the forums.

Hehe, 35 next Tuesday myself.   :P

@Ceo I hope you understand that dave and I are just messing with you. ;)

Touching a final time of the use of the the word "queer:" As I've mentioned it before, it's largely a cultural thing.  The most of the folks that I see using the term are in Canada, Europe and parts of Australia  Really, it's been more in the US than anywhere else that that term has been used in very destructive and hateful ways.

Without the baggage associated due to the ignorant and hateful, I personally like the word, just on it's own.  Long before it became the word with the awful intent it has today, it meant, "odd" or "unusual"

When I think of folks using that term on the forums, I'm thinking in the "Way Back" terms, not just in terms of their LGBTQA sexuality.  In my favorite example, the original  Alice in Wonderland novel, which I read as a kid.  I've always related to this quote.

Alice took up the fan and gloves, and, as the hall was very hot, she kept fanning herself all the time she went on talking: 'Dear, dear! How queer everything is to-day! And yesterday things went on just as usual. I wonder if I've been changed in the night? Let me think: was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I'm not the same, the next question is, Who in the world am I? Ah, that's the great puzzle!' And she began thinking over all the children she knew that were of the same age as herself, to see if she could have been changed for any of them.

I apologize for that derail there.  Back to finishing off ME2 for the second time.   :D

Youngsters the lot of you.  :)  When you get to my age (39) then you'll... blah blah blah.

Anyway, to get back on topic.  Have any of you seen the newish elf pictures?  I had planned on a Qunari mage to romance Sera for my first playthrough but those freckles have won me over.  It looks like it might have to be an Elven mage after all.  Think I'll save the Qunari for Josephine.  Maybe make her a warrior instead.

And I'll definitely be on blackout from the US release date at least until it comes out here in the UK, and possibly until I've finished my first playthrough however long that takes.

I'm 34 :wizard:

I use queer pretty much only in reference to theory. I thought about using the term to describe myself, but it suddenly felt like a heavy label that didn't fit right.

It is an option, I think, on FB, to describe oneself as queer. To me the word is very "hip" right now; if someone says they are queer, I kind of side-eye them with that "dern whippsersnapper" look in my eye.

The word I detest the most is "homosexual." Like someone else said, I can just see/hear the dumbest of the dumb in politics saying the word like they have a bad taste in their mouth lol Plus the emphasis is all on SEXXXUAL... like that's all a gay person is. SEX SEX SEX!

I did, and I was disappointed that the one with freckles was a girl, b/c that's close to how I want to make my inquisitor look, lol!

I have a feeling, after seeing the beastly face one of the devs made and called "Beauty" that the CC is SO flexible, you can probably make your male elf look pretty... pretty. :)

Meh, people who comment on anything to do with IGN always seem to be awful, plus I have noticed the backlash against SJW's has also caused the bigots to come out in force of late.  -_-

Ah, GaymerX. The convention where what little representation I though I had through Dragon Age was destroyed. :(

Are you referring to the bit about Bioware's disinterest in showing ambiguity? If not, what happened? I must have missed the info.

Ugh. I know... I read the first couple comments then stopped because people are just gross. I don't suppose a reminder that not all of us straight people feel that way makes it any better? I'm excited that GaymerX is returning, because I found the panels really interesting, and because I like seeing different types of characters represented in the games I play. And I want to see games made that as many people as possible can potentially enjoy. As a woman who didn't get into gaming until she was 25 because she assumed all the cool games were made just for the guys, I can relate, at least a little bit. I really wish so many straight people would stop with this outdated ridiculous notion that LGBT content only exists for LGBT people - the only thing that stops them from enjoying LGBT characters and same sex romances is their own close-mindedness (among other things).

I see. It's not something I specifically thought about before that happened to be honest. For myself I personally always wanted sexualities defined in that I wanted ambiguity if any to be defined as well. I admit I'm not very informed on this too much so I don't want to say something stupid, but is defining ambiguity not okay with you? Or do you want ambiguity to be left ambiguous as well? Is there a practical difference? Just trying to understand, you don't have to answer if you don't want to. :)

If they were all ambiguous like you thought that'd be more than just "a little" representation. That's 100% representation of your sexuality to the exclusion of all others. That's not really fair either.
