Over the past couple years I have grown to appreciate Governor Beshear a lot more than I used to. 

 

 

He has rammed medicaid expansion through the state assembly, made decent progress on doing the same with minimum wage increase, presided over one of the country's most successful Obamacare rollouts, improved school standards and some performance metrics drastically, and refused calls for austerity, all things we desperately need in this state due to all the poverty we got. He has done so with relatively little of the scandal and factional chaos customary to the Kentucky Democratic Party.

 

When he got elected, he ran on essentially "I'm not Ernie Fletcher, and also here is a pie-in-the-sky plan to boost revenue with Casinos nobody is gonna build here", so it was easy to see him as an I'll-do-anything-to-get-elected dude shallowly trading on the long tradition of rural Kentucky populists, but in retrospect I think he has done a good job. 

 

This year he is retiring (term limits). The democrats have fielded only one serious candidate to replace him while the Republicans engage in a nasty multidirectional primary. While this candidate - generically handsome urbanite AG Jack Conway- has not done anything to convince me he is more than a stuffed shirt,

 

 

I think that, on the strength of Beshear's performance, I will not only vote for him but maybe volunteer as well, for the first time in a long while.
