Well it is an Mature Audiences-rated crime drama so there's the usual stuff you'd expect with that

Then there's the combination of McCaunaghey's character's otherness and moral and metaphysical angst - conveyed through unnerving monologues - and Harrelson's character's blind, groping rage, which can be intimidating.

In general it puts a lot of effort into cultivating a sort of ineffably, almost mystically creepy vibe, being heavily inspired by various weird/cosmic horror writers (most explicitly robert chambers, but also arthur machen, william hodgson, alan moore, etc)

I think stylistically you can draw some comparisons to the coen brothers' adaptation of No Country for Old Men, where the ultraviolence tends to be more shocking and unnerving than in most media because it so suddenly erupts into the midst of carefully-maintained, quiet tension.

the tension between the protagonists is a big part of it.

you perpetually expect their relationship to erupt into something horrific

I mean it's got a lot of the same pernicious use of gender dynamics that you would find in something like game of bones, so

ORPHAN BLACK IS A SERIES

A CANADIAN SERIES!!!

starts off with this british drifter who gets off a train and watches a woman prepare to probably kill herself and ****. she slowly approaches this woman to try and be like yo, no, don't do the thing!! but then the woman turns to face her and dun dun DUN

she has her face!!! they look exactly the same!

basically the premise is that somebody made a bunch of clones of some person and now there's a bunch of them living all over the world and whoever made them is slowly killing them all off. or something. we're only halfway thru the series

the biggest selling point is tatiana maslany, the lead actress. she plays like 8 different clones of herself and it's rly just a masterclass in acting. it's so far not very sci fi-y, kinda just these people tryin to figure things out and this woman who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and gets tangled up in the mess, u kno, the uze,,

i'm really enjoying it. we're trying to not speed through the season cause there's only 1 so far with the second currently airing sighs

WOW you guys. I just finished Broadchurch and I HIGHLY recommend watching it if you love crime dramas.

I would compare it to True Detective without the gruesome bits but with much better female characters.
