Not sure if this is the best place to post this...

I've been reading a bit about The Warden's involvment in DA:I and someone mentioned that if your warden died in Origins The Warden-Commander from Awakening would be the warden thats mentioned at DA2.  This kinda made me wonder if your Warden lives are they always The Warden-Commander?  What if you didn't play or didn't load an Awakening save in DA2;  is there any refrence to this?

Unless they die, it makes sense the Warden always becomes a Warden-Commander. I mean they did defeat a Blight in record time.

As long as you import a save from origins with a living Warden then they are always the commander. You just didn't see what they did in awakening.

Yeah, it kind of sucks; it's one of those things they pigeon-hole you into -- there's no way out of becoming Warden-Commander.

Bummer... I was hoping the Hero of Ferelden and the Warden-Commander could be separate characters :(

That brings up a question-did the First Warden confirm him as Warden Commander? He has the title in Awakenings, but we're talking about 7-8 years later. He may not have ever been confirmed as Warden Commander by the First Warden, or there might be a separate Warden Commander. I don't think we actually know that the Warden Commander referenced is the Hero of Ferelden unless we get confirmation.

Well, they are if your Warden dies killing the Archdemon.

Awakening happens 6 months after Origins, not 7-8 years.

Why would it be 'Out of Character' for your Warden to become Commander? Isn't that pretty much what he/she was doing in the OC.

Nah my Mahariel never wanted to become a Warden; I really loved all the dialog choices with Duncan at the beginning because it lets you build your character like that. Finally Duncan gets annoyed and is like, you either die or you come with me, brat! So my Warden went with him, reluctantly lol

All throughout the game, I used the dialog choices that allowed him to identify as Dalish, not a Warden. That was really awesome that they let me do that.

Then at the end, he promised Zevran that he would travel with him, once Alistair was settled as king.

Then DA:A comes along, and it's like I'm playing a completely different character :(

I'm mostly but not really over it  I just headcanon that they were like, "Okay, you're the new Warden-Commander," and he was all, "NO!  " and they were all, "Do it or we'll throw you into the Deep Roads," and so he was like, "Fiiiine.  <_< "

Funnily enough I did that with every origin except dalish  . Because the choice was clear from the get go, you either join the wardens or die a very slow and painful death. What really bugged me of all origins was the Dwarf Noble. So, I found Duncan in the deep roads, and I didn't wanted to join the Wardens (I was playing as an entitled bastard who really didn't wanted to don any real work) why I couldn't just follow him to the surface. It could have gone something like this

Duncan: Lord Aeducan what are you doing here?

DN : Yeah funny thing, I was just exiled for fratricide

Duncan: Too bad, you are my b!tch now, Uh. I meant that the Wardens don't care about the past.

DN : Hey but I don't want to join the wardens , can't I just follow you till we reach the surface, and then we will go our own merry way

Duncan: Nope

DN: Would you kill me just for following you.

Duncan: Yep

DN: Fine, let's go to your friggin Korcarri wilds.

LOL I forgot about that; I did start a DN playthrough and now you remind me of how annoyed I was with the whole Grey Warden recruitment situation.

If you didn't want to play as a Grey Warden, why did you buy Dragon Age: Origins?

The headcanon Bioware uses is a Dalish woman who made the ultimate sacrifice.  If that's the case, what is her warden-commander like? There's no reason to think the warden-commander is also an elf woman with the same political and social motivations who happens to look exactly like the deceased hero of Fereldan.

Because I wanted an epic fantasy adventure with tactical party-based combat and role-playing? :D
I have three Wardens. One made the Ultimate Sacrifice. One married Queen Anora. One became King Alistair's chancellor. Both of my living Wardens were more invested in managing the crown than rebuilding the Wardens because I chose to role-play them that way. Will I get over it if Word of God says they were dragged away by their duties? Sure. But I reserve the right to be disgruntled that we were given the option to become King/Queen/Chancellor and that meant absolutely nothing.

Alright, that's a good answer. I was just genuinely curious, is all. ^_^

I agree; it was a great answer  ^_^ As for me, I had two playthroughs, a city elf who ached to become a Warden and be a hero because he was tired of his small town life, and a Dalish, who loved his clan and was tragically forced to give up his old life to become a Warden. I find both to be compelling storylines; being a reluctant Warden is just as interesting as wanting to be a hero. I really love both characters, but it only made sense for one of them to become Warden-Commander.

I never could understand why so many players love the Wardens so much. Being a Warden sucks! The only good part about the entire organization is the cool uniform, and that wasn't even a thing until DA2!

From the way the devs talk about the default, it seems that the default choices are ones that have the least amount of impact on the plot, because a new player won't be able to appreciate callbacks. So I guess this means that if you made the Ultimate Sacrifice, the Warden/Warden-Commander won't be referenced much in DAI.

I don't know. Being a City Elf or Casteless Dwarf whom the nobles spat on now bowing to your will was a pretty good perk. :P

Fantasy settings are fun in general. I had already been playing Bioware games for several years prior and haven't been disappointed. It was created and written by David Gaider, who had already wrote some of my favorite stuff. It doesn't mean I have to like the duty of a Grey Warden though. There are dialogue options that let you voice that. Even the writers know it can be perceived in different ways. If they wanted you to like it, it'd be like any other railroaded action adventure game.

edit: BTW, good question :)
