Nah my Mahariel never wanted to become a Warden; I really loved all the dialog choices with Duncan at the beginning because it lets you build your character like that. Finally Duncan gets annoyed and is like, you either die or you come with me, brat! So my Warden went with him, reluctantly lol

All throughout the game, I used the dialog choices that allowed him to identify as Dalish, not a Warden. That was really awesome that they let me do that.

Then at the end, he promised Zevran that he would travel with him, once Alistair was settled as king.

Then DA:A comes along, and it's like I'm playing a completely different character :(

I roleplayed my Dalish Warden a similar way - Duncan basically forced me to become a Warden, and I complained the entire time. Didn't want to do it. Pretty much only did it cos my Warden fell in love with Alistair.

I still didn't have a problem roleplaying my character in Awakening, though. I basically viewed it as, they promoted me against my will, and now I'm stuck doing this. So my Warden was just grumpy the entire time, treated everyone who argued against me like they were idiots for challanging the hero of ferelden and killed them if they didn't back down. And then when it was all over, I happily ran back to Denerim to be with my Alistair.

One really good roleplaying moment I got out of it was not letting Ohgren become a Warden. I figured I never wanted to be a Warden, I'm not letting anyone I remotely care about suffer the same fate.

I thought I remembered being Warden-Commander as a temporary thing to restore peace? It's part of why I didn't mind my Queen Cousland being pulled away from court as much. It does seem silly to be forced to take the role when you had options to choose from at the end of DAO.

You are forced to head canon a bit in Awakenings if you didn't opt for building up the Grey Wardens at the end of Origins.   However, notwithstanding the number of people who do just seem to go off and do their own thing (Alistair, Anders, Fiona), it was my understanding that once you joined you were sort of obliged to follow the chain of command.   The experiment in Ferelden where a Grey Warden has temporal power was something new and it is natural that the leaders back at Grey Warden Headquarters in the Anderfels would want to use the Hero of Ferelden if they could because they already had the respect of the populace and whoever the new monarch was both of Ferelden and the dwarves.  Also, since the dark spawn were still on the surface despite stopping the Blight, it would be felt that their job was not yet completed until they had been driven back underground.   So they would be asked to put any personal plans on hold until the situation resolved itself.

As it happened, it didn't take long and it would seem the Warden could then go back to doing whatever it was they wanted to do in the first place.   My Cousland consort was able to return to Denerim and an enthusiastic reception from both Queen and people.    Alastair makes reference to his queen consort if you meet with him in Kirkwall.  If you meet with him as a Grey Warden, he makes reference that love is otherwise engaged and then gives you a different pendant from the one you usually get, "The Sacred Heart".   Lelianna (Sister Nightingale) makes reference to a Warden lover as well.   The others could do whatever they wanted.   Some obviously go off on a Witch Hunt.

If you don't play Awakening, then the Warden Commander referred to in DA2 could be anyone.   I was a bit annoyed though when Anders said the Grey Wardens made him get rid of his cat since my Warden Commander had given him that cat.   And Zevran pops up regardless of what he planned to do with the Warden at the end of Orgins, so in a way I think the writers intended that the Warden Commander was no longer the Hero of Ferelden, so Zevran no longer felt welcome assisting them without officially joining and the WC thought small furry animals made you soft.
