Personally, I preferred DA2's approach tenfold over Origins. The romances are some of the best i've ever encountered in a game (RPG or no) and beat DA2 by far but... even with mods (not those explicit ones) they just... it's not happening for me. The dead eyes, the awkward shaky animations, the attempts at facial expressions, the not so sexy underwear. I have a few romance mods that attempt to enhance or make them more tolerable, but it's still a no go. I skip them everytime. The bloopers did not help one bit, nor the Broodmother romancing Alistair clip on Youtube.

The kisses are fine, I like that you have free reign on them, too. Just, please... fade to black after some makin' out from now on. Wake up in eachothers arms. Doesn't work in ME series, either, for me.

So, what do y'all think? Like them, hate them, feel nuttin?

I think steering clear of puppet sex or uncanny valleys is an excellent idea. Unless they can get it perfectly right, then it's best to just fade to black. I'd rather the resources were spent on getting the kisses right.

I think the chances of that are slim to none. So yes, better to just avoid it altogether.

They need to bring these things along a bit slower if you ask me.  Which is tough to do within the time frame of the game. Cutscene or a glance between player and romanceable, next phase funny teasing convo, next phase a hug, next phase walking hand in hand, etc.  Replace the old 'pick the heart' in convo with a short cutscene that moves things along with a bit better of pacing.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that they'll be moving away from conversation icons entirely, but I have no clue where, and I might be entirely wrong, so don't quote me on that.

But yes, I can agree that pacing the romances can be difficult, at best.

My biggest concern about the romances is that they're all done in one big scene, then there's virtually nothing but an occasional pat line when you click on  your LI. In DA:2 this was most frustratiing, and I wished they had left in the ability to kiss your LI, some of the time, like in Origins. For instance, In DA2, when your mother died would have been an appropriate time for at least a kiss and a hug.

Also, the fully clothed bedroom scene, in Ander's case, was ridiculous. He didn't even take off his boots, knife, and canteen!  Hawk still had all her clothes and boots on too. Great way to spoil what could have been a real romantic scene, and still not have nudity.

Anyway, I still have hopes that someone in Bioware has an idea of how a romance scene should be done, excluding nudity, but still making it more realistic,  I read somewhere that this might be possible in DA:I, but I can't remember where I saw it.

Sexy scenes. I don't mind them. Me personally I wouldn't have a problem with fade-to-black and just imagine x number of scenarios of what happened between the characters.

I didn't buy the game for the sex scenes. I bought the game for the story, characters and gameplay. I get all the sexy time I want with my lady friend who likes to keep me smiling.

I vote yea, with caveats.  The technical skill shown in DA:O does not represent what is possible to portray.  It needs to be better.

I'm apparently not subject to the uncanny valley, so I don't have a problem with it. My big problem with DAO was Morrigan suddenly having a bra.

I like sex scenes, but I like more the romance as a whole. I think ME3 did the the best of all BW games. I'm also for more of "shady" nudity (like with Liara).

I can write my own smut. I always escape out of the Origins 'love scenes.' I did like that you could kiss or even say, "Hey, let do tent time," because it felt like an acknowledgement of an ongoing thing, instead of sticking into Act Two, Scene 6 only.

The character-specific cinematics in DA2 were mostly nice? But there really needed to be a Renegade interrupt for getting slammed into a wall by your LI in a fit of pain/PTSD/whatever that was. Even if it was "supposed" to be romantic, I feel very strongly that there should have been a OH HELL NO option just then.

You put something erotic in, have it make sense, both cinematically and logically.

That's all I need.

Things like 'Morrigan's bra'...ugh.. yeah..

Interrupts would have been great, for both sides. Give Fenris a slap! Tell Anders his obsession is disturbing and slap him. Tell Merrill to stop awkwarding up everything and slap her. Slap Isabela when she mentions her sexual prowess.

SLAP EVERYONE.

If they're going to do it, there should be a feeling of it evolving... DAO got that right. DA2 didn't. At least IMO. Alistair is a good example or leliana... you feel like it's evolving to something. With Zev the sex comes first but after that you do feel it's evolving. There is a sense of intimacy there. You have some choices in dialogue, most of which will lead you to romance. That's realistic and better than the dumb heart dialogue wheel.

As for the sex scenes themselves, underwear is absurd. I have nude mods and mods that give you an actual scene. It gives it a feel.... like if you are watching a movie and they have an intimate scene that leads to sex and you are really wrapped up in it, it's pulled you in, then it all works really well. You feel the romance and passion and even love. That's a well done scene. In a game, it can be well done too, when written well and allowing for interactions that allow the player to feel the experience since it is role playing. Doesn't have to be some long torrid scene. Actually the shorter more romantic ones work the best I think. Just enough to give you a feel, not like porn, more like romance and people in love. They works well... you feel like you are in the romance and it's FUN. No weird awkwardness. Like being really immersed in a movie with a couple that just sweeps you away. When it's over you feel like you were part of it.

DA2 didn't have that. DAO did well for the most part but the scenes they gave us weren't really that well done and looked like crap. Mods fixed them so it's like you are watching a romantic kiss in a great movie. It's really just a matter of handling it in an adult manner, rather than making it like it is for a fourteen year old kid, and of course, avoiding what looks like straight up porn. There is a balance, which can be easily achieved. And if you don't like it, then you just don't do that part but for those that find it adds something to it... then it works well. Frankly, I would never feel a romance is complete without the couple having sex. Most writing (books, movies, TV) brings a romance to the point where the couple has sex because it is the natural progression of things and gives it a feeling that it has evolved into it's most mature state. When was the last time you saw a romance in the media or lived one in your life that never reached this point? Generally when they don't it is because it was not an ideal or even a good relationship. If it were, it would have gone further. We're doing a game romance for the ideal.

I suppose a couple kissing in a way that alludes to what will come next is also another way to handle it. That has been done very successfully in movies and tv. It could work well for games. It's all about how it is handled and if it gives a feeling of satisfaction. You don't need to see the scene to know what was going to happen next and be caught up in the feeling of it which is what RPGs are all about.

I actually don't mind them as long as I use a mod that changes the underwear to something that doesn't look like a diaper. Some of the mods out there (Improved Romance Scenes - Alistair, Zevran Romance Scenes, etc.) actually make the romance/sexy times much better than the vanilla versions. However, I think the best thing would be to combine the scenes from DA:O and DA2 into a longer scene using better graphics and more realism. A nice blend of intensity and romance that feels real and moves the relationship forward.

I think the sexy scenes are ok but It would be nice that my PC wouldn't wear that generic bra thing. I think it's quite horrible :) I think those scenes could have been made so that you just don't see the private parts. I guess I would like to see more shady scenes than in DAO because the facial expressions of the characters could have been better. I have only romanced Fenris in DA2 both rivalmance and friendship and I liked the rivalmance better and I like the slamming the wall scene very much but It would have been nice that there would have been more romantic content than just that.

I think the next morning scenes could also be handled in a way that your PC wouldn't put that bra thing on for example you both wake up in a bed cowered with a blanket or only you are covered with a blanket. I think that would be much better.

It doesn't necessarily have to be anything explicit. Jade Empire had pretty good romance scenes. Frankly, I'd prefer something like that to an awkward underwear (or worse yet clothed) sex scene.

Sexy scenes? Yes. Lord forbid we enter an era of censership where story and character's are denied the aspect of love and carnal desire. To those who are uncomfortable with scenes of an adult nature, time to ask Bioware to add a new game mode.

It'll probably be called: Sitting in a closet with a sack cloth over head reciting hail mary's while sitting with your legs crossed..... mode.

That said, the underwear models bioware went with in ME3 was...... an odd choice. Especially when you consider Liara's model. Arguably her love scenes were scenes done right where the devs just went for it without pulling their punches.

Basically, either commit to the love scenes, (Not talking explicit here, more like suggestive ala ME1, or Miranda's in ME2..... something that fit's the characters that demonstrates good taste while conveying the emotion's the developers want to illicit that carry forward through the rest of the game)....... Or don't commit and do something else.

Personally I hope they commit. It's good to see a dev tackle love and sex in games while exploring the consequences of character's having relationships. BW have always made character's who aren't cardboard cutouts, mainly because they are not afraid to push past the archtype each represents.

Agreed with Redbelle. Either do it right, or don't do it at all. I don't care if it's explicit or just suggestive, I just want my reaction to be like: "OK, they're having sex", rather than "why are they wearing that?".

My big problem with DAO was Morrigan suddenly having a bra.

QFT. I had never considered the fact that Morrigan only puts a bra on when she's having sex.
