Starting a new character soon after my Awakening playthrough and i have never tried 2h warrior. So thinking male noble dwarf with Oghren's haircut (Not relevant, just love that haircut.) Need a few tips on what talents to get early and differences in weapons etc.

Good 2handers i know about is Ageless from the Dragon in Orzammar royal palace,Yusaris from Watchguard of the reaching in the circle, The meteor sword from Soldiers peak dlc and the axe from defeating the vartherral in Morrigan dlc on hard.

I will probably be playing on normal difficulty, maybe hard. Ok so in general what i am wondering about is stats distribution, other 2handed weapons that will help out, what abilities to get first and why, what specializations i should pick. Also wondering if there are any of the races that begins with a talent in 2hander. Plus what is the real difference between sword, axe and mace/maul?

2 handed is usually all strength, maybe a little dex if you want to get Perfect striking with +100 attack. Disengage requires 18 Dex, so your call.

Mace is one handed I think.

I favor Maul with my 2H, very high armor penetration helps. If you want to add a little critical, equip him with the High Regard of House Dace.

Pommel Strike is good early for the knockdown.

The top-end 2-hander weapons are the dragonbone cleaver (Witch Hunt DLC) and the chasind great maul (buy from Gorim after 3 main quests are completed). If you have the Return to Ostagar DLC, the nug crusher is an outstanding option for its early availability and massive +100 stamina boost. Some of the passive abilities in the 2-handed tree are bugged and don't work as intended. The Shattering Blows passive does not work at all, and Destroyer's armour debuff only applies on critical hits. If you're on PC, however, there is a fix to this and many other ability-related bugs.

Funnily enough, sunder arms is arguably one of the best 2h talents and puts many of the upper-tier abilities to shame, best of all being only available for one point. I don't really need to say much about indomitable, as it has no downsides to speak of; get it and never turn it off.

As for attributes, strength should be your primary focus to maximize your damage output. I don't see much use of dexterity, since your strength already contributes to how accurate your attacks are and a few paltry points added to defense isn't going to provide a very noticeable effect (assuming you already have somebody on tanking duty and they're doing their job effectively). Willpower and constitution are up to personal taste. If you find yourself wanting a bit more stamina/health, it's perfectly fine to slip the odd point into either. But I advise against sinking a significant amount into either of those because there are a number of extremely powerful items that will give you several levels worth of health and stamina (in particular, the Lifegiver ring gives you +10 constitution, the dragonbone cleaver gives you +8 willpower, Chasind maul gives 75 stamina, etc.). Not to mention that you gain a bit of both every time you level up.

Berserker is probably the obvious choice for a first specialization. The tree doesn't require a high level to quickly advance, and the Berserk sustainable costs very little in upkeep. More damage is only a good thing. Once you get the constraint passive, the stamina regeneration penalty is negated. The only thing that may annoy is that it's one of those sustainables that will automatically turn off after battle (the mod I linked earlier stops this). It seems like a perfect match for warriors who aim to deal as much damage as possible, although some don't like it. I really hate the last ability and tend to skip it. The second is up to your personal preference, although champion might be the best all around (due to war cry's powerful close range CC and Rally's great area buff). Templar has a great area stun spell but it's at the end of the tree and the three abilities before it are of questionable value in my opinion. I don't know much about reaver.

The difference between greatswords/battleaxes/mauls are the attribute and speed modifiers, critical chance, and armour penetration. The Wiki compares the different strengths of each of the weapon types

Ribosome pretty much describe my build. I went Berserker/Templar only because there are places in the game where I use Shale or someone other than AL. I always make mages a top priority in that get always get a hit with their staves. I use Wynne for Gyphs of warding her herioric defense line and take her to haste. She is designed to provide CC, support and healing. I don't use Haste until I get the repeater glove. Without that Leliana is useless there is a bug with archery and Haste. Dex by end game is 18. My will is at 20. I hit the circle first to get my bonus points. Everything else goes to strength. I equip this guy with the lifegiver ring.

In the beginning of the game I use GSwords. They are faster than mauls and battle axes. Towards the end I go for the Mauls. It is slower than the GSword but faster than the battle axes but it has the greatest AP and strength modifier. You do see the difference using it. The Chasind maul gives 75 stamina is my pick. I play this as a DPS player and use a tank unless it is a one on one fight. One on one I would use this guy solo. Your male noble dwarf with spell resistance gear and templar SP can nail Gaxkang on hard or nightmare himself and it is fun.

Only thing I have to offer to the above tips is that you may wish to acquire Sunder Arms and Sunder Armor as quickly as possible to aid in speeding combat. The 2H Warrior can be painfully slow towards the beginning of the game, and these abilities help remove frustration. Enjoy!

Yeah but I always go all Strength so I'm thinking of maybe going 2 Strength 1 dex.  Or 2 Strength 1 constitution.  Or 2 Strength 1 Dex. up to 42 Strength then 1 Strength and 2 Constitution.  I used Nug Crusher all the way through Awakening.

Strength and Dex both increase your attack by .5 per point over the base of 10. So both are giving you the same chance to hit.

It has been some time, but I am one that does not follow the min/ max standard design. I prefer a higher DEX, WILL, and CON; believe it is 30 DEX, 20 or 30 WILL, and 20 CON.

While STR towers above the remaining scores, I enjoy a seemingly well balanced character with a bit more fuel in the tank.; pun intended.

Nug Crusher is one of the best early weapons you can get for a 2H warrior-+4 dex, +100 stamina, and chance of stun.

Mauls have some great stats, but the graphical image of those massive, blunt weapons slapping against the spine when moving bothers me; stick with Greatswords.

The biggest downer of a 2H-er is the slow strike animation. For this reason, accuracy is important - it's a big deal every time you miss a hit. So I would recommend a few odd points into Dex. I'd also recommend talent-spamming, since it's only auto-attacks that miss. Which means you'll want a fairly significant stamina pool, too. But yes, Str should be your primary stat.

Also, give Wynne (or Morrigan in a pinch) Haste and glue her to your hip. That helps.  :)

Another good point for a 2 Hander is the Critical Backstab/ damage items that add damage to critical hits which 2 handers can force through talents.

Since I'm on the PC and use mods there are more of these items availiable but the vanilla Dragon Age has the advantage because Sunder weapons and Sunder Armor are spam talents that both hit twice and can be critical hits. Mighty Blow, Critical Strike, and Berserk specs Final Blow (well not in vanilla DA:O...) are also automactic critical hits.

In the vanilla DA:O you can stack at least 50% extra damage from Critical Backstab/Damage items on tap.

Whenever I play as a 2H Warden. I always remember to chain abilities after AA so that I can keep attacking without many breaks because of the slow animation as a 2H warrior :). I find that I maximize my damage by chaining spells before or after 1 AA :)

Of course there are some abilities with a longer cast timer but when you learn the abilities who got no cast time you basically can get 3 hits in with 1 rotations. AA-ability-AA :)

EDIT 1:  I just noticed Elhanan has said something similar (Smart minds think alike it seems)

Only thing I have to offer to the above tips is that you may wish to acquire Sunder Arms and Sunder Armor as quickly as possible to aid in speeding combat. The 2H Warrior can be painfully slow towards the beginning of the game, and these abilities help remove frustration. Enjoy!
