Alas, poor Ghostknife. I knew him not well.

Yes, this game has gotten me through some rough patches. But, it (rather, my past addiction to it) has also thrown a wrench into the works a few times.

Fair enough. The BSN wouldnt be famous if people here just accepted things at face value.

I could see how it could get addicting. Especially in the early days when new kits and goodies were rolling out all the time.

To the title - Yes.

Uhhh, no... I don't use games as escapism from real life troubles.

Actually I can't even play games in such times, impossible to enjoy them for me in such cases.

I agree with this also - can't really enjoy playing if not already happy in RL.

Just becomes a distraction - sometimes can work, make you forget about whatever troubled you at the time and remember with different feeling. Sometimes just useless, digging the proverbial pit even deeper...

Does boredom count as tough times? In that case, yes.

How many of you out there have used this game to keep your mind busy during a tough time in your life? I have found that the pace of MP keeps you from dwelling on much of anything but the task at hand and as such everytime I find myself faced with a situation I am sick of thinking about I wind up right back in the lobbies. Anyone else been there?

Ah, no?  Psychologically, I'd probably be better off not playing -- seems to raise my anxiety level (performance anxiety?)  I fall more in the procrastination camp -- using games  (& BSN) to avoid unpleasant things I should be doing instead (taxes, housework, etc.)

Anyway, hang in there Ghost; sorry to hear about your tough times.

It's not the games.. it's the company that I find uplifting. Pugging or playing a single player game doesn't make me feel better, laughing with good friends does. I can see Crimson's argument for Skyrim though.. since it's so immersive.

Edit: I think it's Ghostknife too : )

I "waste" time on bsn when the internet is up the creek, or when someone is on the phone for hours on end - meaning unstable connection and lag if I attempt to play so I don't bother trying.

******* annoying to not be in control of my own leisure time, but whatever...

Not necessarily tough times, but I play whenever I am sick of studying and want to get my mind off that. It's a positive way to relieve some stress and frustration.

Agreed, it's refreshing to play a couple games between thesis writing sessions.

No, I don't play ME3 whenever I have real life problems on my plate. If it work for you and it helps you, then there's no harm in playing the game whenever things get tough. :)

For me, personally, that doesn't work. If I have stuff on my mind, then I should probably want to deal with them straight away. Whenever I feel like crap, I play like crap - basically. In that case, it's best for me to avoid ME3 for a while. If I do play, then it will just lead to more frustration. Working out seems to work better, in that regard.

But to each their own. If playing ME3 relaxes you in those moments where life tests you, then that's great.

Not exactly. I use it along with whiskey after earning myself a hard earned rest from work. Killing things actually relaxes me.

The solution to my problems are at the end of this blunt.

Srsly though, this game used to be like that for me, but facing my problems and then playing is a lot more fun now.

It helped me to start feeling a little normal again when I was stuck in a deep, dark emotional hole after my mother's suicide.

Full story for those curious

It may seem silly or not make sense, but it actually helped me immensely in combination with the support I was already receiving. It was the first thing to make me laugh and smile again, so for that I will always have a special place in my heart for ME3 MP.

I don't think it is silly or nonsensical. There is "something" in this co-op experience where you have the chance to help others and in doing so bringing some cheer into their lives. It works both ways. There are many times where you can't help but notice if you help someone, they almost always return the favor if given the chance. Sometimes you get a thank you over the mic or excited voices if there is a successfully mission. These are all minor things, but even the minor things can make a difference in people's lives.

Thank you for sharing this DragonRacer.

Probably the last thing you want to hear, but I had not seen that before (I tend to avoid those sort of threads - keep my RL and gaming separate) so thanks for sharing - my deepest sympathy and respect.
