So, I have a question that I hope someone can help me out with. I wasn't very careful with my ME saves. I.E. I have one save. I had completed the game, and then decided to start a new game plus on top of my completed save. Needless to say new games came out and all I managed to do was beat like the first mission.
Did I shoot myself in the foot when it comes to character transfer to ME2? I understand you have to have a completed game save, well mine technically is, it's just got a new game plus over top of it. Will I have to finish that new game plus before I can use that character, or is my data from the completed save stored somewhere in the save and it can pull that information back up?

Everytime you beat the game (defeat sovereign and that little chat after), the game makes a hidden end-save. It doesn't matter if you play again using NG+, that save is safe deep in your MU (or else). You'll be able to use when importing from ME1 to ME2.

Thank you so much for this response. I had asked a couple other people and all I kept getting was "You have to have a finished game save on your hard drive" which wasn't as clear as what you just said. I can rest easy knowing I won't have to play through the entire game again if I want to transfer my character.

N30795, I was wondering the exact same question...& thank you for the answer, but is there any way to confirm this fact? Just curious as if this is true then I'll go back & get a couple achievements before the 2nd mass effect gets here (my issue is I played through once each with two different ppl, both "good" & "bad" & I like the way both turned out in the end & I've always been afraid that if I restarted, I'd have to make exactly the same decisions AGAIN & then beat it AGAIN for it to show up in Mass Effect 2)

If you want to see the end game saves, start up the game, start a new character, and choose 'select existing ID'. The newgame+ feature uses the same saves that are going to be used for importing your Shep into ME2. Otherwise, they are hidden on the 360, and I suspect may be hidden inside the gamertag files themselves. On the PC they're easy to find.

Does that apply between ME2 and ME3?! I made that same mistake today!

I've been having a discussion with a Bioware Rep about this issue. The short answer is: yes and no
According to Bioware's Brian Russell the hidden save file that is created at the end of ME1 should not be overwritten if you start a newgame+ with that same character. However, I have verified on my system that if you have downloaded the DLC and gone back to the citadel to play it that file is overwritten. Also, it is not copied if you upgrade your HDD and use the microsoft transfer cables. This won't be an issue in ME3. For the whole hairy discussion you can see it here: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/107/index/761083/14#1168866 with the real meat being on page 14.
