I enjoyed playing as an archer in DA:O, but I was disappointed by the build in DA2.
I'm hoping that in Inquisition that the Archer get a more unique build and talent tree than it has in the past.
I'd like to see more variety in it, if possible.

Agreed, especially in comparison to a dagger wielding rogue, the archer specialization felt like an afterthought.
Ugh. I'm so sick of PC pro-Archer nonsense. You're a minority! Get used to it! Bioware should just be allowed to make the game they want to make, instead of being forced to neuter their creativity by kowtowing to archery lobbyists.

I effing love you so much sometimes that I want to puke.
I loved the Archer in DA:O...then I played Oblivion and Skyrim. I could not get those arrows to go anywhere I wanted. Really just made me hate archery even though it's completely different styles and games. DA2 didn't help, using the console to add Royal Archer to Hawke sort of lessened the blow but not that much.
Now I just play mages all in time in everything. Still buffing archery would be nice for people who want bow&arrow characters.

Really? I've not done much in Oblivion, but I played as an Archer in Skyrim (it was my primary weapon)...once you get a few perks, it's really awesome. You can kill most anything before they even notice you. I loved it so much.

Yeah, I just couldn't do it I have tried a few more times but they always end up the same way. Thanks to the power of modding my character is currently Hawke, champion robes and staff of parthalan included. Won't be changing that anytime soon. Unless someone makes a Sebastian armour mod for Skyrim, that sh*t is fancy.

You haven't been banned yet? What a shame.
I actually like archer tree in DA2, what i didn't like is that in both games the rest of the rouge trees were useless for an archer.

I found the rogue tree for the archer to be quite useful especially Sabotage and Scoundrel, coupled that with Assassin and Duelist Specializations.
I have to admit to being spoiled by playing Magick Archer in Dragon's Dogma.
Ugh yessss.... Though my favorite was Assassin's archery, no auto-locking and just so dang fluid.
If DAI had great archery like that game, I would have a very hard time playing any other class, even mage. There's just something so satisfying in felling an enemy from a distance with a simple arrow. Not to mention how cool bows look. ![]()

Well, that's just it. It doesn't feel like a proper specialization, just an afterthought. There's not much diversity in it compared to other trees.

I'll have to try it again. Do you have any build recommendations?

I would love something more intuitive for archery in DAI. I always loved playing snipers. It's all I usually do in Skyrim or Mass Effect. Kill 'em before they can get close enough to breathe on you, I always say.

Archery and maxed out Alchemy was a great big I Win Button in Oblivion; it was great! Seriously; stealth, some of the four-effect poisons, and Mad Archery Skills, and my wood-elf could one-shot damn near anything.
I suspect I should give my Skyrim mage a sister who arches, if the archery is still as much fun.
What did you enjoy about the archery in DA:O?

Actually, my favourite archery build was the one where I maxed out the Assassin tree, cherry picked the Shadow and Subterfuge trees for a bit of survivability and equipped for speed. It's a bit sad when the way to make an archer is to effectively ignore the Archery tree for most of the game, but my stealthy sniper was a oneshotting, rapid fire goddess. Varric for crowd control, a Mage for the faceroll factor and Aveline to put the fear of God into people (well, the fear of Her into people ... ) and all was very jolly indeed.

What do your attributes generally end up looking like? Out of curiosity?

I'll PM you the build I based it on, but it's usually Cunning to whatever level you need for traps, Dex until you hit 100% critical and then Cunning to Max. Sometimes in the early stages, I might put a bit into Con, but once you have Sturdy Decoy and Evade, you're fine.
I still think there's a good case to make Archers (or Rangers) their own class, and not a specialization for either warriors or rogues. (I'm not saying either shouldn't use bows, but there should be a separate class that focuses on special archery-based abilities.)
Do we have both strings? Archers are not complete without bowstrings!
On a more serious note, I really dislikes archery in both DAO and DAII. IMO it sucked in DAO because unless I played the archer, they just couldn't do anything right, even with perfectly set combat tactics, and in DAII the whole action game thing made them rather useless, as we were always swarmed with enemies who were jumping around like fleas, it was hardto keep a distance. I did love archers in Baldur's Gate, because you could set them up farther out from the battlefield and let them pick off the peeps from there. Anyways, it could well be that I just sucked at archery in DA games.

You have a point, they got swarmed a lot. Moreso in Kirkwall than Origins, where the combat is faster.
I loved archery in both DAO and DA2. Getting swarmed is not a problem for rogues with evade, stealth or decoy. If you have the warrior doing the tauting the archer usually can set up at a distance. Sebestian and Varric are very good at getting in to open areas with otu much trouble. Tweaking their tactics also helps.
A party of rogues is really fun. Hawke and Isabela for close range. Varric and Sebestian at long range. If you are playing Normal level set up the tactics to use their special abilities and your are good to go. If you are playing Nightmare then friendly fire becomes a problem.
Archery is my favorite way to play Dragon Age. I loved it in DAO, and really enjoyed my No-Archery-Talents build for DA2. If you do it right, you can OHK practically anything. I went with Shadow and then Assassin, making use of the attack-from-stealth mechanic to murder my way through the game. If you double-up with another rogue, man, it's almost unfair. ![]()
That said, I would've liked the Archery Tree in DA2 to be useful to, you know, archers. Playing on Nightmare with an archer is almost as dangerous as playing with a mage with that silly rainfall of arrows thing. And I was a bit put out that in Legacy I got the dagger-form of Hawke's key, and I had to keep switching back to my bow and arrow after every cutscene.

Would you mind sharing your build/attribute distribution with me? If it's okay, just shoot me a PM. I just started a new game and wanted to give archery another go, but with a better build...
But this actually reinforces my point...if the archery tree is useless to archers (even if you can make a kickass archer without it), it needs reworking.

I actually based my own build off of someone else's: mjharper's I am the Shadow, and I never miss: A Rogue Archer build (Version 2.2). It's a great read.

Thanks! I'm going to tinker around and see if I can't make something happen. Maybe I'll just take a couple Maker's Sighs with me to make sure I get the Bow for Hawke's Key. With all the dlc products, you end up having plenty of coin you never use later in the game.
