The same could be said for Varric, imo.

I've actually had those same concerns with Varric, but he was at least involved in the dragon plot with Alistair out of the main games. He could help tie that up for people that didn't read the comic, if they plan on doing anything with Yavana and the dragons in game. Since we heard Alistair would have some role, it's possible it could help to have someone in the party that knows him.

I'll be honest, I'm not sure Varric was necessary, either. If he wasn't, though, that doesn't really convince me that we need more people back just for the sake of familiar faces. I can see where Varric would be more useful that Cullen in some situations, though. With Cullen I just can't see how he's important enough for a companion role. So far, his characterization hasn't implied he's been doing anything that interesting. I'm not saying it's 100% certain that he hasn't done something we don't know about, such as something to do with the red templars, I'm just saying I'm concerned based on what we know about him right now. I'm willing to reserve the majority of my judgment until we actually see what precisely his role will be.

It would be interesting to see Cullen as a companion or just having a more stronger precense than before in DA2.

I'm getting dizzy because I keep turning around and around with my opinions.  First, I was convinced that Cullen was a companion because we saw him in the concept art, survey, and knew that Greg was in the studio again.  Then, I became convinced that he's not a companion because people pointed out that he was never shown with a weapon and it would make sense that the three advisors would be in the war room concept art (I'm buying Leliana and Scribe Girl as espionage and trade advisors at this point).  Now I don't know what to think.  Technically, Cullen could still be an NPC with a major role (like a military advisor), but those tweets sounds more like he is a companion.  What I'm concerned about is the word "companionship".  That's not the same as being a companion, but it could be.  I believe that he's an LI, but I'm not sure what his role will be.  I guess we'd know if we heard that LIs were just companions or if there are some NPC romances.

This speculation/spoiling of companions and LIs is fun, but frustrating at times.

With Meredith dead won't Cullen already have too much on his plate? Will he be able to make field trips and actually get his hands dirty when he has to stop a rebellion?? There is always the possibility of him being kicked out of the Templars and then joining the Inquisitor on his quest. He is one of the very few likable Templars in the series.

I agree he was one of very few likeable Templars in DA2. I remember when Hawke refers to him as an old friend and he smiles and I was thinking "I really hope I don't have to kill him when I side with the mages."

That's assuming he joined the Templars that broke away from the Chantry

Some Templars stayed loyal

I assume that Cullen was kicked out of the Templqr order, or left after suffering some pretty severe repurcussions, for opposing Meredith.

I'd enjoy this development!  In another thread someone said they wouldn't mind seeing him sent to Aeonar for going against Meredith.  THAT could be awesome.  Poor Cullen, he's already suffered so much :P

I sort of assume Cullen wont be with the templars if he's a companion or major advisory NPC, because why else would he join the Inquisition? I wonder the same thing about Cassandra and Leliana, though. If the Inquisition's job is in part to investigate the possible abuses/corruption of the Chantry, it seems a bit weird to stack the ranks with active members of the Chantry's various levels of military force.

Cullen romance goes the route of traynor and steve romance, or liara romance in shadow broker dlc.

Not a companion, still can bang.

I also think there's a chance he was kicked out. I mean, especially if he stood up against Meredith with a pro-mage Hawke. I doubt the Chantry would like that very much, but I think at that point, Cullen did consider Hawke a friend.

He was willing to arrest him/her but not kill them outright. In fact from the moment Meredith calls for the rite of annulment, he expresses a lot of doubt that they are doing the right thing and seems sort of disenchanted with the order in general. It REALLY surprised me when he let Hawke go. I know some people think it was because he was afraid, but I didn't see it like that.

Well, Aeonar is somewhere in northern Ferelden and Lily in DA:O was sent there for something far less dangerous than what Cullen did.  Let's go rescue that heretic!

I don't think he was scared, either. Cullen has a long history as a soldier and a high position in the order. I doubt he's unaware that he could be killed in the line of duty. I think the character, whether you like him or not, is presented with more honor than cowardice. Also, he's been tortured extensively by blood mages, so is being run through by Hawke and his friends really that terrifying in comparison to his past experience? It doesn't make sense to me that he's just afraid of Hawke. I think he would have fought even if he knew he'd lose, if it were just that. I think he lets Hawke go out of a sense of respect and realization that he was wrong about Meredith and that Hawke protected Kirkwall from her in the end.

That's exactly how I feel. He respected Hawke and probably considered him/her something of a friend. Assuming Hawke was a mage, not only does he turn against the Knight Commander to protect an apostate, he lets said apostate go free! There's a very good chance he could have been thrown in Aeonar for being a mage sympathizer, which would be ironic.

Well, congratulations to the Cullan fan club for getting their long desired romance.

That being said I'm not convinced he's a follower. The initial question and poorly phrased and now the answers are getting convoluted. My guess is that he's left the Templars and will be serving as our military advisor counter to Leliana and Scribe Girl. Maybe he'll even be a temporary companion.

Yeah, I think that it's either this or that he's a companion (and romanceable either way).  I flip back and forth between which I think is more likely, but I've become convinced that he's going to have a lot of face time with my Inquisitor.

The 20+ hours recording lines kinda cinched it for me. He's not even finished yet, either. That's a lot of lines for an NPC.
