Just as a note, "20 hours in recording booth would not mean 20 hours of recorded dialogue."

To do that, a voice actor would need to be recording 100% of the time without dropping character, without interacting with anyone else, doing it all in one take.

I don't know how much dialogue time gets recorded in a particular session, but I have seen the "20 hours of dialogue" go around quite a bit.

I'm pretty sure he's a companion, but I've been trying to contain my excitement about having him in the group. He's my favourite Templar in the games, mainly because of his whole character development and stance on the whole Mage/Templar thing. But I wouldn't mind if he were not to be a companion, because I think it's very plausible that he's some sort of advisor or at least a very prominent character in the game.

Oh and if I were to choose, I'd rather have Evangeline as a Templar-companion, but then we'd have to get Rhys as well.

Thank you for clearing that up, though I sadly doubt people will use the "20 hours" differently now.

20 hours works out to about 1500 lines, on average, which is about what the DA2 companions had. Or so I understand.

It was great fun reading all of Greg Ellis' tweets and getting confirmation that Cullen is in the game. That's awesome! Beyond that, I assume nothing. He is not a romance nor is he a companion unless or until the devs explicitly say so. I'm still hoping he is, of course (as a long-standing Cullen fan), but I know better than to risk my heart shattering into a million pieces if I assume and then it turns out not to be the case.

TL;DR: I still hope Cullen will be a companion, but it ain't over (or true) until David Gaider sings. *

*Disclaimer: This is in no way meant to imply that Mr. Gaider is overweight or in any way akin to a fat lady!

I've had the amazing fontofnothing look at the DAO toolset. She found this:

alistair_main.dlg: 1427 lines
leliana.dlg: 982 lines
morrigan_main.dlg: 1265 lines
oghren_main.dlg: 608 lines
sten_main.dlg: 635 lines
wynne.dlg: 636 lines
zevran_main.dlg: 956 lines

Make of that what you will.

Do you know if that removes comment/non-spoken lines?

Apparently it's not all the companion lines, like some of the combat barks are in another file. But it's the bulk of them according to fontofnothing.

I'd love to see a comparison of some major NPCs too.  If Cullen were an advisor type character in the Keep, who would be comparable?  Are there NPCs that have over 1000 lines?

Oh yes, it'd definitely miss those ones just looking at the conversation files.  If Alistair says something during a plot critical dialogue, that line would be written in that dialogue.  Same with follower interjections and whatnot.  I'm just curious what constitutes the line count as I no longer have super quick access to the toolset anymore.

In the conversation editor, many of the lines aren't actually spoken by the character, but are actually comment lines the writers will add to make it easier to keep track of the flow of the conversation.

So it looks like a branching tree, with green text that might say "IF WARDEN COMPLETED REDCLIFFE ALREADY"

An advantage of doing it this way is that the details of the content can change while the logic in how the conversation branches is contained in this line, that will have a lesser chance of being accidentally deleted, and stuff like that.  (and it just makes it easier to read at a glance anyways)

Haha, that may or may not be a work in progress. We (the Cullen thread) have asked, but I'm not sure if she's looked. It is hard to tell though, since Loghain is probably the biggest NPC in the game, but also the Secret Companion. Other important people, like Arl Eamon, don't really start talking until about half way through the game due to how the story works.

Major NPC: Joker or Hackett might make for a good comparison. I think I remember seeing somewhere that people saw Joker had a significant bump in lines from ME2 to ME3 and that led to speculation that he might be romancable.

Yep, I agree that there really isn't anyone in DA who fits the bill, but Joker or Hackett or Anderson might be interesting to look at.

Excuse my wording. I meant 20 hours of recording time. He was recording dialogue in that 20 hours. Obviously he didn't record 20 hours of dialogue - that would be like a fourth of the game. I just misspoke/typed.

Yeah, I don't think people actually thought he had literally 20 hours worth of dialogue. Pretty sure that would make this game Cullen Age: Inquisition if so.

He's recorded 1000+ lines by now, at least. Which is around the same as Alistair/Morrigan and most of the DA2 companions, as I understand it. It could still point to him being a major NPC, I suppose. Not sure how many lines they usually get.

ok, here is something i found some time ago (it's OLD though), it says that DA:O had 68 260 character dialogue lines, and it compares it it to  movies, which have aprox 3000 lines. so yeah...Cullen nearly has a movie i guess ;)

Here is the link if you haven't seen it...

Raunchy's always good. Guess Cullen's been beating himself up for not taking Amell's/Surana's offer for sexy times in DAO, so he's got all that pent up sexual tension going on 10+ years. Implications... pleasant.

I really can't picture Cullen getting extra cozy with just anyone, though. That would seem quite out of character for the guy, which leads me to believe he'd have to develop a meaningful relationship with a certain someone before he'd kick it up a notch. With a hypothesized 1,500 spoken lines, he's either a very talkative NPC, the new town crier, or he's a companion.

Hmm, if only we could ask Ms. Black how many VA sessions (or hours) she's done so far, then we might be able to compare her amount to Ser Ellis'. We know Morrigan's coming back as more than just a cameo, so I'd label her as an important NPC. If Cullen's an important NPC as well, their lines would probably be close in number. I dunno, it's just a thought.

In Gaider's tumblr post he said that a "player character" can do as many as 20-30.  Does that mean the pc or is that also companions?  I hope he's a companion!

Aaaand...I'd totally be okay with Cullen as a town crier.  Greg Ellis has a marvelous voice.
