It kind of feels like Bioware is groupthinking their marketing strategies right off a cliff. Just tell people what's going on.

Ah well. It's all a big game. (Not Dragon Age, but the whole marketing charade.) They want the forums and boards to be active and "a-buzz" with gossip. They want people to be tuning in for the next however many months until release, that way they don't lose any fan interest. It's all part of the business plan in order to sell the game because - money.

Wow. Cynical, much? ;)

We'll talk about everything, in good time. There's not "marketing strategy" insomuch as there is group discussion regarding what can be discussed, and when. While you might want to know everything immediately, we need to figure out how to address more than just the people sitting on these forums...and thus we consider how and when to answer questions, and not simply respond to every single question solely because someone thought to ask it. As has always been the case.

There are, after all, many months more yet to come. If waiting for information is difficult, I'd suggest backing off and returning (if you're so inclined) when the marketing push for DAI has actually begun (since it hasn't, and information will be limited until it does).

You came straight out and said Leliana and Morrigan were no companions. Maybe, you know, you can do the same now. (I get that stuff needs to go through official channels and all, but you two know people in high places. Poke them. :) )

The trouble is that if Cullen isn't a companion but *is* some other kind of important character, involved in a system they aren't prepared to talk about yet, confirming that he's not puts them in a bad situation.

If they didn't say what he was involved in, they'd have a bunch of disappointed people and no way to let them know that Cullen had another role to play.

Also if he's a romance interest but not a companion, maybe they don't want to reveal that either - otherwise people would start speculating about the LI status of a whole bunch of other characters, even the ones that aren't going to be actual party members.

Eh, I don't think the onus is on Bioware for what he shared.  I don't claim to know what his NDA says (if he has one), but he's been the only actor to share that much thus far.  And he's done this kinda thing before, back before DA:I was even a thing we knew about.

It's really not that hard. Yeah he's in the game but not companion. End of story.
Time will heal all wounds in time for release for all those disappointed people.
Why would they confirm any romance? The raunchy stuff could have been him dealing with a desire demon. :P
Easy. :)

That is... a very good point. [INSTANTLY BEGINS SPECULATING] [FORCES SELF TO STOP]

This is my first time following a Bioware game pre-release and so far I feel pretty lucky to receive the info we have.  Obviously creating a buzz around an upcoming game benefits sales, but the tidbits we're thrown also feel like a reward for showing up to the party early.

Not only does it appear Greg Ellis didn't really understand the Bioware meaning behind "companion" and "romance," he didn't comprehend the devotion of the fanbase until he visited the forums a few days ago.  If he had known what ravenous creatures we are, he might not have tweeted the way he did :P

I assume, because at this point, you don't want to start talking about features and events that are still in development only to have them vastly change and/or get cut later on down the line.

Yeah but it's foolish to pretend that Dragon Age is not a money-making franchise. That's why I'm coming off a bit cynical, or rather - realistic. ;)

That does not mean I don't love the game. And it doesn't mean I have no respect for the people who design/market it. I understand that promotion is essential to earning revenue.

I'm still confused about allowing voice actors to answer questions about characters (since the marketing push hasn't begun) when they aren't exactly clear on the character's role in the game. But I've chalked it up to a miscommunication between the devs and performers.

Umm...no. You guys are reaching.

Party members in previous games have done up to 20 sessions total. You cannot take that number and multiply it by x to get the number of lines for a given character, particularly when sessions vary in length (depending on the complexity of the lines being recorded), we do a lot of re-records, and actors often record for multiple characters.

I get the hope that's in this thread, and I feel ya, but I'd advise keeping a rein on your extrapolations--for your own peace of mind.

Haha.

This intervention on the part of DG has me fairly convinced Cullen may not be a companion, in spite of - well - the entirety of the thread that I started. When I originally posted the screen shot, I was under the impression that Ellis (who I know barely anything about) knew everything about Cullen and knew what "a Dragon Age" was, much less companionship and romance. I was under the wrong impression. Ellis was under the wrong impression. And we are all now under... conflicting impressions and basically back to where we were, speculating about Cullen's role.

Many people have said "romanceable NPC" and I have yet to see a dev intervene with that assertion. So I'm growing more and more "aware" of this being the possibility. Though, can you blame me (or anyone after that tweet) for thinking otherwise?

The devs haven't revealed anything about Cullen yet, but when they do, of course we will know for sure. I guess in the end it doesn't matter. I haven't been on these forums for awhile, but when Ellis made that tweet was when I returned.

Guess I'll be taking a break since even the information we're being fed now is just wrong.

Maybe, if Cullen is not a companion, then he simply is an important NPC and even finally ends up with somebody who is not the PC in DA:I?

Well, I still bet he is a companion and a LI. But a girl can dream, can't she?

He'll have to go through me!

Lol,jk! To be honest at this point I'll be fine with whatever they decide to do with him(unless they kill him off),for the moment I'm just glad to know he is 100% in the game...Although I'm still leaning more towards the important npc/advisor role from what we've heard so far, hope I'm wrong and he turns out to be a companion,a girl can always dream! :D

"Titanic's Greg Ellis"?  I get that he was in Titanic, but since his role was small,

How dare you.

Annnnnnnd there goes my "No, really, I'm fine with any level of involvement he has in the game" state of peaceful acceptance for the day. Note to self: to preserve some shred of sanity on the subject, avoid pictures of Cullen sporting a wickedly arched eyebrow.

DAT FUR

Since fur is generally associated with Ferelden fashion, I wonder if this outfit means that Cullen's returned to Ferelden since DA2?
Of course, the concept art that this image is based on is pretty old, AND the touch of Ferelden flair could just be due to Cullen being Fereldan in origin...
