My gut reaction to hearing there were only 5 recording sessions sounded pretty low to me for a companion. After Gaider's comments, I'm gonna expect that he isn't going to be a companion, and just be (very) pleasently surprised if he is.
Though in preperation for him (potentially) being a non-companion-love-interest, I'm going to do a 5th playthrough between now and release with a female Amell Warden.
It's one thing to hope. It's another to believe that a situation is clearly true. If someone goes into a game convinced that X is going to be the case, and it's not there, and X is that thing that was so important to them, it can colour their entire experience in a negative way. This disappointment can then be manifested in different ways, some of which involve sending me angry PMs about how I'm a liar and so forth.
I've seen it happen for DAO, and I have seen it happen for DA2, and those are just for the games that I've helped develop. If you're one of the people that won't feel crushed if a character isn't what you were expecting it to be, then it's reasonable to conclude that the comments made about keeping realistic expectations probably don't need to apply to you.
And the no City Elf PC in Inquistion thing.
It just seems unfortunate that this happened, is all. I think most of us had made peace with the likelihood that there would be no Cullen in a companion slot, never mind romance. Greg Ellis' enthusiastic and well-meant, but probably ignorant tweets just stirred those hopes back up. Some fans may find themselves having to swallow a bitter disappointment that they otherwise would not have had to if nothing had been said/tweeted.
Ah well. This is my advice to all my fellow Cullen fans:
Tried not to get too optimistic... but did anyway.
Definately feeling discouraged. I hate the idea of Cullen being an NPC for a third game, especially considering all the interesting rationales for him being a companion.
I'm actually right there with you. I allowed myself to get caught up in all the excitement when he was tweeting that stuff, after shoving all my Cullen optimism into a jar and screwing the lid on tight just the week before. It all came springing out and I was all excited and hopeful again. Now I'm just a little on the heartbroken side, tbh.

Is it only 5 total or just 5 so far? Cause there is still a long way to go and probably plenty more time for him to do more recordings.
Though I would absolutely love for Cullen to be a companion and LI, I am still not holding my breath. Thinking his YES comment was just a 'smile and nod' reply

While he's not on my top list of people I wanna see again, I would look forward to seeing him again as he's had pretty big involvement in some major events of the last two games.

Yeah, but it was so small and had such little detail that it was hard to see him at all. This one is much clearer. I wasn't even convinced at first that the concept art was Cullen because of the lack of detail.

I actually don't like the scars much. 
I mean, that piece is very well done, no offense to the artist. If he's a love interest, though, not so into the scarred up face. lol

TY, its ok, I usually make him scarless but I thought I would give him a bit of a makeover
