From what I understand, we'll have greater control over follower skill sets this time around. So, if a character is a warrior, they aren't locked into W/S or 2H forever no matter what their initial build.

I really hope this is true. I would love to take Aveline with me and make an awesome all-women party, but I don't really enjoy playing with a tank :/

But Varric already told Cassandra everything he knew, so it doesn't make him essential per se (unless he lied about some of the stuff, ofcourse).

Mike said there's a reason why Cassandra and Varric, specifically, decided to team up after the events of DA2.

It is odd, I'll admit. Hope there's a good reason. I don't want Varric to be another Garrus and have them overdo the "bro" thing or something.

My main concern with having Varric in the game as a companion again is that he won't have much new perspective to add.  I loved Varric the first time around, just like I loved Garrus the second time around.  The second game, though, Garrus had very little to say aside from romancing him.  We already knew about him from the first game, and his dialogue was so little in the second.  I hope that Varric is full fleshed out again.  I don't have this concern with Cullen because we still don't know that much about him.  Sure, we've seen where he's been in the past twelve to fifteen years depending on this timeline, but before that?  We don't know that much.  Same goes for Cassandra.

I think it's not possible because  we have different protaginist this time. They didn't know each other before.

But it's difficult to not like him so he propably will be "bro" with Inquisitor. :P

You know that the Dragon Age writing team are almost entirely different people to the Mass Effect one, right? Comparing the franchises just because they come from the same developer doesn't seem all that useful.

I do, but it is still a slight worry at the back of my mind.  I have faith that they will do it justice, especially since Varric was one of my favorite characters.  I still can't shake my slight worry, though.  They did a good job with Anders, in my opinion, when bringing him back for a second game, but they haven't had any other characters as companions for other games.  Anders is so changed from one game to the next that he almost is a different character-which fits since he was possessed by Justice.  With Varric, we've had him as a companion for one game and some comics on him.  There just doesn't seem to be that much undiscovered at Varric.  As I said, I'm sure they will pull it off well.  Since some people seem to be concerned about Cullen bringing nothing new to the table because we've seen him before, I'm just saying that I think Varric would be more of a problem over Cullen.

Looks like a standard amount of companion's lines. I remember DAII companions had around 1500 lines each.

Ooh cool, I was wondering what the average number was for companions.  Thanks ^_^

Cassandra's a Seeker, and they fall under the same umbrella organization. Cassandra does fine for this and Cullen is redundant.

We literally have no idea what role Cullen will play in Inquisition.  Seems premature to call an undefined role redundant.  Cullen's been around for some huge Templar/Mage events, so maybe he licked the Lyrium idol and accidentally created the Red Templars.  Or maybe Cullen isn't the anti-mage character, maybe he's the anti-Templar/Red Templar.  Or maybe Cassandra is more concerned with the Veil tears and doesn't giving a flying fart about mages in DA:I, so Cullen being the anti-mage isn't redundant.  Or maybe his role is something else entirely that I can't come up with because I'm not a creative writer.  I'll save my judgement for when I see what people who write for a living come up with.

I think worries about Cullen result from fact that Cullen is not that interesting character. It's not that I don't like him I just don't understand why he is so popular. :pinched:

Oh, he's got that whole tortured mind/forbidden romance thing from the first game going on.  It's not too much of a mystery to me.  People who didn't play a female Amell or Surana probably have little clue that this happens, though.

Plus, he looks like Justin Timberlake sort of.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Cullen chaste?

Oh, a proper chaste romance? [SIGH] Don't tease me so.

I'm pretty sure that Templars are not required to take a vow of chastity like Brothers and Sisters of the Chantry are.

I know. A girl can hope, though. (Not too hard of hoping, however. I know lots of other people would be displeased if Cullen were chaste.  )

I dunno if you've read the comics, but from the looks of things the writers have a lot more mileage to go with Varric. Not only has he got a few unsettled skeletons in his closest, he's also got a lot of emotional development to go through. Varric, unlike Garrus in ME1, never got all that much development in DA:II, he was always kinda just the shoulder for Hawke and the others to lean on. The comics hint that being that shoulder has kinda gotten to him, and I'm suspecting will start getting some payoff in DA:I.
