I've played all three games countless times and thought about the story and characters so much! Read about how everyone hated the ending and I thought they kind of fixed it with the DLC. I thought the ending was very basic with choice of a color ending in a nut shell. However it was ok enough not to spoil the entire series. A lot of people want their Shepard character to come back for the proposed Mass Effect 4. I think Bioware intended for the first three to be a trilogy and that's the way it should stay! The way they ended it your character could of have certainly died right in front of your eyes or not with his gasp of breath after the credits. To create another game based on Shepard would not make any sense at this point given how they ended it because of the choices. Mass effect 4 needs to start fresh with a new story and characters. That's not to say they should not have a few characters from past games that could possibly be alive to surface in this new game. If they have a couple characters make a appearance and give some references to Shepard's heroics as part of history would give us fans some more closure with Shepard's story. Just a subtle way of doing that makes perfect sense! I absolutely believe that should happen with this new game. Moving on from the previous Mass Effect trilogy tie ins that should be there in ME4 let me say this new ME4 should be a all new trilogy! The character creation should involve any race instead of just human. The story should be different circumstances this time around. Bioware should feature a origin tale to your character. Not just all the sudden be thrown into a war with a character whose already the established military type. Let us play from the beginning as a younger unestablished character. Give us the full scope of the story! Story should be obviously after the events of Shepard's story. How many years after would be up to Bioware from where they wanna go with their story arc. Would suggest it be years after the Mass Effect Relays have been fixed. If they really wanted to tie the new series in to the previous in any way they could use the ending with the little boy with his grandpa talking about the Shepard. Beyond the little boy and his grandpa material that they may or may not use I would personally like to see your character possibly form into the bounty hunter type! Think it would be a different welcoming look for the new trilogy. Your character starts as a unestablished type like I mentioned earlier, but something happens and your forced to grow up and provide or avenge your mother/father. Something along the lines of deciding to become a bounty hunter to make a living to support or plot revenge against the person who may of killed them. That's just a origin story though to get the real story started. When you start your own personal journey as a bounty hunter you over time start to discover something far more sinister is happening that's bigger than any of your problems! Think that would be a great jumping point. That's my thoughts on how they should approach the new ME4 trilogy! Share your thoughts with me below please.

Why the *&!@#)!(@# do people add (SPOILERS) to topics about ME4?

Like they really know the story and don't want to spill the beans.

Geez

Why do people feel the need to rip into anyone and everyone they disagree with?

Geez

As for my own opinion, I think they need to reboot the franchise.

ME3 was essentially a MasS Effect Ragnarok.  Worse yet, it's ending is both A) Awful enough to break the base and B) Too divergent to continue.  Any direct sequel will have to either canonize certain outcomes or trivialize them to the point of uselessness.

I'm certainly not saying they should continue the franchise with Shepard, but so many want that to happen. I was merely trying to suggest a way they could make everyone happy. If they don't tie them together it want hurt my feeling!

I'm just saying: bounty hunter out for revenge has been done to death. Needs to be expanded on to make it interesting. If New Vegas was about nothing more than "find Benny" I'd say the same about it.

I agree with that. Would you rather you just start as some military mad man as opposed to having a origin story of how you got so awesome all the sudden at the very beginning of a game? That was the one thing I did not care for with the original Mass Effect. You were just the celebrated military type to begin with speaking of tired cliches....

Mass Effect: Origins does have a nice ring to it. :D

I'm OK with a silent protagonist if that's what it'd take. More than OK with dropping the paragon/renegade system while we're at it. Where we run into trouble is a directionless plot. ME isn't an MMORPG.

What's your idea of how they could not create a tired cliche? I would like to hear it in all seriousness. I'm open to anything. Just don't want a rinse and repeat of the first trilogy versus this new one! Do not want a prequel either. Read the comics and books for all the backstory I need. Even watched the animated film.

If they make a another trilogy, I'll wait till the third game is released and get it that way I don't have worry about what happened in the 2 previous games.

This entire section of the forums is one giant spoiler. It´s entirely about the ME3 story.

First, thanks for posting your thoughts. Second, just as a small fyi, you don't need to caution ME3 spoilers since the ME3 story forum is the spoiler forum. ;)

I like the name for the new series possibly, but only thing is are you saying you want a prequel? If so why? From all the source material I've looked at and read it would not be that exciting for me to play a prequel! Cause I would know what I'm getting into already. Want something completely new. No reapers! No collectors! New Alien types and locations!

I wasn't saying "prequel," I was making a shout-out to Dragon Age: Origins. Check it out, it has similarities to what you're proposing.

Deinon is referencing Dragon Age: Origins and its system of multiple playable backstories. Basically agreeing that a "seeing how the PC got awesome" could be pretty cool.

Edit: Beaten. How dare you answer a question directed at you before me, DS.

Yes! I loved Origins. Still wondering what happened with Dragon Age 2? Lol If that's what he's referring to I'm all for that!

DA2 was rushed out, but I like it a lot in spite of its shortcomings. DA: Inquisition looks to be incredible, and I'll probably be buying a PS4 just to play it.

As for ME4, I'd prefer they do absolutely no imported saves, barely any mention of Shepard and the Reapers (just enough so you know it's a sequel), and a small character-focused story like ME2.

A more personal self-contained/standalone story, set within the current timeline (2157 - 2185)

Featuring nobody from the Shepard trilogy at all. More exploration. Less pew pewing down hallways.

No more ancient invincible galaxy eating threats beckoning us to save all life in existence

More 'alien' aliens.

The protagonist dies (no matter what)

Probably to see if the trilogy is worth getting invested in, or if they're gonna punch you in the quad and run away laughing in the last ten minutes

Yeah. That's what I was saying in origin post as far as any tie ins with previous trilogy. If any just little subtle ones that make sense!
