And he wasn't even that useful for half of the game (ME2). All of the snipers had their strengths (Thane had biotics, for example..  while Garrus or Zaeed were better with shields.. Legion comes a bit late), but Garrus fans act like he has to be taken everywhere and he's the most useful thing around. I like him, but I resent that they couldn't make a little more room for other characters. He's alloted like 3 or 4 comments after every mission in ME3 now.. he has more lines than anyone. The "word budget" could have been spread out better. Some characters barely get to say anything at all.

Garrus has Overload which is quite useful when combined with his class power. The other two squadmates with access to Overload are Kasumi and Miranda. I don't like taking Kasumi to combat missions and I don't like Miranda :D He also has a sealable armor so I take him to the environments with no/toxic atmosphere ;)

Overload is definitely useful, but I'm referring to him not being optimal to biotics and collectors. Thane is better there (while he isn't good at everything garrus is good at).

I like Kasumi a lot.... too bad she's gone too.

At the very least, i would've liked these characters to talk more in ME3. Garrus chews up a lot of dialogue time. While Thane sits lifeless in the hospital, after giving you a handful of lines.

Hell, it doesn't even have to apply to non-crew. Ashley is pretty lifeless too, and she's on the ship.

One of the best parts about playing the series when I did was how little I actually knew about the games.  I knew about the Virmire Survivor; I knew that I needed to focus on either paragon or renegade to get more dialogue choices.  I knew that I had to be careful with my squad selection for the SM, and that I needed to finish up everything but the Reaper IFF quest before I got locked into a "But Thou Must" situation.  With ME3, I knew that the ending had a Deus Ex Machina that enraged fans.  That was it, so I had all of these little discoveries.

If I remember anything else like that, I'll be happy to share it.   :)

I had only vaguely heard about MAss Effect (and nothing at all about Dragon Age) when I bought ME1/2 on sale on steam. Knew nothing about the plot nor anything else - not a single spoiler. Which is why I am avoiding the DA:I forums :P

Well, of course he is not an optimal squadmate for Collectors (although he does have some limited ability of dealing with them, unlike Thane who has no powers against shields). Good thing we spend most of the game fighting mercs :D

Garrus does have a lot of dialogue. I wonder if some new lines are available if he dies. I've seen Menae without him and Traynor patting Shepard on the back, but it would be interesting to find new crew dialogue if he's dead.

Just a little here and there. You've covered it.

Depends on the merc.. the blue suns and eclipse salarians are shield/tech users. Like I said, he's useful half of the game. I'm only arguing against the idea that he's some bro that Shep has to drag along everywhere. "There's no Shepard without Vakarian!" If there's any squadmate that actually fits anywhere, it's Miranda or Kaidan...and I'm not even that big of a fan.

themikefest is the only person who agrees with me that playing ME3 with a dead Garrus is OK. :P

Because...you get Traynor patting you on the back.

Traynor pats Shepard on the back?

Spoiler

This is dialogue that Traynor has with Tali if Garrus is not in ME3

For those that use Gibbed tweaks: If you use the Bool flag to get Kelly to give you back your fish (get 3817 and set it to True,) then she shows up alive at the Citadel regardless of whether or not you had the dinner with her. Note: I don't know if this works if you didn't save her in ME2.  No one gets left behind with my Sheps, so Ms. Chambers survived the SM.

Anyway, I just found that out tonight, because I got tired of having to buy back all my fish.   I found this flag in an old BSN post while searching the net, but no one said she'd show up.  It was a pleasant surprise.  You can then convince her to change her identity and then give her a pep talk later.  Since it's very unlikely that I'll ever romance Kelly, this will be my chance to see this mini quest-chain.   I like her and I was bummed that I had to have dinner with her in order to see her again.

Also, I don't think it'll fully trip the "romance" flag for ME2, it only seems to have given me my fish back and started her little quest chain.  In any case, I looked it up and Kaidan is okay if I "cheated" on him in between games.   I don't think romancing Kelly affects him so long as Shep visits him the hospital all three times/gives him his "medicinal" whiskey (check out the description of it sometime,) and then reassures him that she still loves him, ect ect.   I did have a recent hard save I made just before talking to Kelly when I ran into her in the refugee camp, so I figure I could go back and set the bool flag back to false if Kaidan was going to get upset.

For the record, Natashina Shepard (current character) spent those scenes in ME2 alone and staring at Kaidan's picture before hitting the Omega Relay, and after literally 13 minutes worth of credits (another thing I noticed recently,) I generally don't go back and talk to anyone on the Normandy in ME2.  I'm ready to fire up ME3 after that long, and get my Shep's features going.

Nat isn't my avatar, but my second playthrough in progress.  I still have over 3500 screenshots on my computer for my LP album to parse through in order to catch up.  I obviously won't use all of them, but I've completed most of the game with Valena Shepard (which is my avatar and my Shepard for my album.)  That's a lot of pictures to got through to find the good ones and try to keep my posts concise, so she'll be on hold for a little while.  I have been playing Nat in the meantime.

Yes, I know I've been slacking on the album.  Yes, a mega update is coming soon.

Oh, I wanted to mention:  If you play an archer and/or want an excellent crafted Late Game bow for Sera, please send me a PM and I can send you the link to an album I have.  I can promise that it is completely spoiler free.  It shows step-by-step what bow, grip, and materials I used for the first bow I ever beat the Elder One with.  I consider the Masterwork slot generally up to player preference, but I'd strongly encourage the rest.   This is all legit; I didn't obtain the mats from using CheatEngine or anything like that.  Anyone can build it if they have the mats, but this is for late in the game.

I'll warn you now, it'll take a fair amount of dragon's bone and a Superior quality rune.

3817 is only for Kelly's dinner, her romance uses a different bool. Also Kelly doesn't count as a proper romance and has no effect on the other romances with your squad.

I liked how mage fit in the story the most (human Circle especially), but the class itself.... it almost feels like DA2's mage, but I think DA2 is better.

lols, thanks for the kelly gibbed tip. I had a restoration mod for Ken and Gabby and its a bit depressing listening to them talking about Cerberus crew being recalled and they escape because the order sound odd. I remember that there's a pregnant Cerberus crew in your ship...

^Overload and Energy Drain was nerfed in ME2 for Barriers. Kinda annoying too when I forgot to switch Energy Drain with Reave whenever I got some mostly Barrier-ed enemies.

I don't know if it was nerfed per se... I don't recall Overload doing anything to ME1 biotics either. But maybe I'm wrong.

ME3 is probably an improvement though.. everyone fits, and everything causes combos.

After 4 complete playthoughs, I finally noticed a reaper destroyer(?) dropping down at the end of Priority:Mars. Also, due to lurking this website, Conrad Verner with his addtional thoughts, especially the thermal clips dialogue... +1 to him.

Here's one I noticed yesterday.  In ME2, if you rewrite the heretics, the green pulse that comes out of the derelict Reaper looks almost exactly like the green beam for the Synthesis ending.  Not sure if it means anything, but I thought it was neat.  I haven't destroyed the heretics before, so I don't know if the pulse has a different color if you choose that option.

Edit: Here's a tip for gibbed users for ME3.  If you use the default skin color, go into the skin tone wheel in Gibbed and subtract 12/11/7 from the red, the green and the blue values.  It'll produce a more natural looking skin tone.  It's subtle, but Shep doesn't look completely washed out in brightly lit cutscenes.

I'm going to put the rest of this rather long post into spoiler tags in order to save on space.  If you don't give a crap about any of this modding stuff, then just ignore the rest.  There is a couple of nice pictures in there though, if you're curious.   ;)

Overload was useful in ME1 considering most of your enemies are Geth and hardly anyone else use barrier and you get four squad member who can use Overload including Liara. But there were a lot of moments in ME2 when Overload and Energy Drain is more a handicap than a necessity. Even Tali is way more useful with her AI hacking than Garrus's Concussive Shot in ME2 & 3 (I wish he have Carnage instead). In ME3, Miranda and Kaidan combo is virtually an unstoppable juggernaut of biotic and tech destruction. They're always my go-to support squad for Super Elite/Spectre challenges.

But ME3 is funny with its banter mechanic. If you like the character, you pick them a lot and if you're alert to the priority banters, you'll be awarded. This make everyone happy but it wasn't very specific to Garrus fans.

and thanks to you guys, after so many playthroughs, my Shepard finally get a hug. No fish since I think I already kill off most of the ME2's fish on my ship and I already get Prejek fish from gibbed. Besides, I like Miranda's comment on Shepard making it a habit to kill fishes. hehehe

I did like Overload in the early parts of ME2, but it was a "crutch" ability as far as I was considered.  Once you got AI hacking going and/or cyro bullets, then Overload becomes obsolete.  Cyro bullets and Concussive Shot (if no AI hacking) really ruin most enemies' day.  Good catch.  :D

Grats on the hug!  I think Kelly looks fantastic in the game, both as her original self and her alternate identity.  The designers did a great job there.

I agree on Energy Drain but not Overload. Starting from rank 3 it overheats enemy weapons so it is still useful against Collectors and Eclipse mercs. It is not as useful as Reave against them, but it's not useless either :)

I never got the appeal of fine tuning power build before each mission. I stick with one build from the beginning to the end.

Garrus doesn't have Carnage probably because it's traditionally shotgun based (or was originally... they gave it Armax Zaeed. Kind of weird, as he has Concussive as well). Garrus covers the same territory with armor piercing ammo.

I can't exactly imagine Zaeed having a place in the story this time, but power wise, he would've been great. Plus, Javik would love him... instead of having to hang around that little whiny soldier who talks about the banshees and rachni. It gives Javik the impression that humans kind of suck. And don't get me started on Allers.

Heh, I just recruited Javik on ME3 on Natashina and I was thinking that he would have loved Zaeed.  Javik doesn't have much in common personality-wise with the current Normandy.   And Allers...yeah, I'm surprised that Javik doesn't comment on her.

I barely do myself... that was one of my main hurdles. Although I'm not as miserable as Javik.

As much as I liked the hardcore types like Javik and Zaeed (and Grunt and Jack), I grew pretty attached to EDI, Traynor, and Cortez. They're the nicest characters ever... but also like my lifeline to ME2. Go team Hammerhead  -_-
