Eh, I think people give Gaspard too much credit. All Celene had to do "win" was get back to Val Royeaux, even with Gaspard alive. He got a couple of major hits in, but ultimately it was Briala who tripped up Celene, not Gaspard.
That's not to say that he's not a magnificent bastard, because he totally is.

It's called subtlety lol. It wouldn't take much. You could probably stop his heart or block the flow of blood to the brain.
I think that'd take too much time and concentration for the results, to be that specific.
Personally, I would love to have some kind of spell akin to D&D's Implosion, though that'd be a bit too overpowered.

Just finished chapter 8, and at least Celene realizes that she lost to Gaspard at the Game (I mean, she really did. Horribly). She admits it with no caveats, and brushes off Ser Michel when he tries to soothe her ego about it (side note: does Ser MIchel get on anyone else's nerves too?). So, props for that, Celene, and also props for the badassery in the forest against Gaspard's men. I thought it was pretty lowdown, though, that she killed her own soldiers on the Imperial Highway, and she had them killed so casually. Necessary? Hmph, I guess so. Just seemed pretty cruel. And now she's willing to make a deal with the Dalish for help fighting Gaspard, to help her get back to Val Royeaux? Interesting. It seems that this plan will backfire in her face somehow, considering how things have been going for her up to this point, but I hope not, and maybe she'll go on a little bit of a roll here soon. The book is great, and I look to finish it by the weekend.

Speaking of burning dreams, I just noticed Ishmael claimed that there are tombs beneath Orlais, dating back to Arlathan, where the noble elven dead were buried.
Now, considering that he is one of the Forbidden Ones, I think we have a confirmation that those stories about immortality were just talltales the elves told their children to make them seem more important than they really are.
We had tombs in Sundermount, too, which Merrill noted. It's not a revelation that some of the Arlathan elves died, since the Dalish are clearly aware of this.

The ones in Sundermount are however from AFTER the quickening happened, and Elves had started dying from old age and illness, so they aren't that special. The ones in Orlais, if they indeed predates humanity, might be very special indeed.

Uthenera was for elves who became weary of life, according to elven lore. The Brecilian Ruins in the kingdom of Ferelden and the mountain of Sundermount in the Vimmark Mountains are sites where Uthenera was performed. Felassan also mentions how some elves in Uthenera were able to achieve "perfection" and draw nourishment from the Beyond, rather than dying while they slumbered.
