I am having difficulty fighting the first shadow priest. I was told to just fight them with force but nothing is working. I'm a druid and all my spells are failing n none of my attacks are hitting. It's making me really mad and frustrated. I'm about to just delete that character n saying screw it. Anyone have any advice?

Who are your companions? You can buff up your attack bonus with potions or spells (especially if you have the priest companion). Otherwise, you'll need to find out the the weaknesses and immunities of the shadow priests and use attacks that use that information.

Alright, I'm thinking of a completely different opponent than Tchos may be thinking of. The "first shadow priest" you're talking about is the guy in the graveyard crypt near Fort Locke, right? In this case, there are two possibilities:
(1) you have Khelgar and Neeshka with you. In this case, as you walk towards that room, you see him in there so it's not cheating to prepare a bit. Buff up with whatever spells you have - Barkskin definitely. If you have a potion of haste/speed, this would be a good time to drink it. As soon as the cutscene ends, pause and target your attacks. Khelgar (and your animal hopefully, but this is out of your control) are going to charge him, and Khelgar is going to knock him down (maybe use a two-handed weapon for this to be sure). Meanwhile, you and Neeshka are going to fill him full of holes and try to prevent him from throwing any spells. Arrows - not spells (I can't think of anything you might have yet that's worth casting as a direct attack on him; when you have 4th Level spells, that changes). You should also have a summoned creature to engage the zombies. Once the priest is fighting and not casting, things become easier but do not underestimate those zombies. By the way - remember this approach because you're going to repeat it in the near future.
(1a) if you still can't get it done - bypass it. Try going on to Highcliff for now and see if you can't pick up a little help along the way. The shadow priest will wait.
(2) this assumes you have gone on to Highcliff and you have some more help with you. The same tactics apply, but you'll have an easier time.

Weapon size doesn't matter, or even that you have a weapon or not. It does for disarm, but not for knockdown.Khelgar is going to knock him down (maybe use a two-handed weapon for this to be sure).
As usual, I can't offer much help regarding OC fights because I haven't played it in years. I'll just say that some other important druid buffs you may want to use (I don't know what level you are) are Stoneskin, Flame Weapon, Freedom of Movement, Death Ward, Tortoise Shield (doesn't stack with Barkskin but it's better), Spell Resistance, Awaken and Greater Magic Fang for the animal...
