Skipping to Dialogue Choices

Apologies if this has been addressed.

As a fan of the elaborate story arcs and character relationships I frequently play multiple characters/playthroughs. I personally love [trying] seeing how all the different choices play out from minor single responses, to flipping an entire interaction.

As such, I eventually reach a point were I can almost recite whole chunks of dialogue. Skipping conversation to reach the one chat choice I wish to play different eventually becomes the norm. On consoles; throughout all recent Bioware games; this is achieved by hitting "X" or "A" (Xbox). The problem is they both will select a dialogue choice if they appear.

What I propose is enabling one to act as "skip" button and one as "select" button. This way I avoid accidently selecting a choice when I become over zealous in my rapid button pressing.

Thank you for your time.

Pretty sure unless you're playing Mass Effect, it's already like that. This "issue" isn't even present in the PC version. But if it was, dialogue isn't meant to be skipped, so.....

Plus, I'd suggest just pushing the button once instead of mashing it over and over again. Just saying.

Yeah like by using the "start" or "select" button on the PS controller. That'd be cool.

(What I'd really really like though is the ability to pause dialogue cutscenes.)

Dragon Age: Origins is the only Bioware game released on last gen systems that did not allow "X" to select dialogue choice as well as skip. All Bioware games that use the chat wheel, introduced within Mass Effect, allow "X" to skip as well as select dialogue choices. I cannot speak for PC but this is how consoles are handled and I simply propose that these two buttons handle one action each via chat.

I realize skipping conversations isn't the recommended playstyle but hearing the same conversation dozens if not more times starts to become tedious. I love the little differences from select choices but even the strongest will start to impatiently press "X" in quick succession.

I only own DA ][ on the PS3. Pressed Square on the PS3 for days, and it didn't select anything. Unlike, Mass Effect, there was no "pick the top choice" when I pressed Square. Plus, that's a pretty broad generalization at the end there. Everyone doesn't love the little differences, for instance. Which aren't even there in DA ][, really. Unless you think, "Hey," "hahaha, Hey," and "I'mmakillyou, Hey," is a difference. Maybe that's just me.

This is the case for DAI.

I'd also like to know whether, when I do skip ahead, I am skipping a line of dialogue or skipping a whole scene. The seamless transitions between conversations and cutscenes in DAO meant that you could skip cutscenes by accident. I did this at Ostagar, and missed the end of the war council. I didn't even know Uldred was there until my 4th time through the game.

So you saw him the first time without knowing who he was, and on your second pass you skipped over the scene, right?

IIRC in Mass Effect some scenes are unskippable. You can skip pure dialogue and movies, but scenes with animation must play; for instance, if a character walks across the room or there's a camera pan, it's not skippable. Would this work for you, or would it cause more problems that it solves?

This appears to be a console-specific problem, right? Because on the PC you can pretty much skip anything in all DA or ME games, with only a few rare exceptions, and you always end up at the next choice without selecting it unless you press the space bar again. I've done enough speedruns of the ME trilogy that way and at least one DA2 speedrun. I can't see why it should't work the same way on consoles: hit the something-button - once! - to skip to the next choice, then select the highlighted option by hitting the same button again.

While we're at it: what about an option to skip the combat...

Yes, it's more of a console problem.

But yeah, press X to skip, press A to select is how it is right now for DAI, and I can't see that changing.  It's useful for QA too since sometimes we need to pick a particular choice, but we're powering through everything else asap.

So the problem was that on the earlier games both X and A could select dialogue choices, huh?

Once again I'm glad I play with mouse and keyboard.

PC has hitting escape as the skip option. And has always been separate buttons on the console. So I think you're safe? I know that I do miss the skip button sometimes. Especially last week when I was playing Silent Hill and had to sit through an Otherworld cutscene every time I died from the stupid Void.

I don't remember what they were for other games, but the concern was that, for example, A would be used for both skipping and selecting.  So if you press it quickly to skip, you could potentially select when you didn't mean to.

I always skip through NPC lines to get to the next one. I read the subtitle, skip, and then read the next subtitle. At Ostagar, Uldred was just a non-descript guy standing in the background during the parts of the scene that I saw (in fact, once you start speaking, he doesn't actually appear on screen). Not only did I not know who he was, but I didn't even recognise him as the same guy when I saw him in the Circle Tower.

Because of the way I skip NPC lines, I will always miss a cutscene that immediately follows interactive dialogue. There may well be other scenes in DAO I missed in this way.

I never skip because I actually like reading and hearing the conversation but I guess it would cause problems if someone is button smashing through multiple playthroughs trying to skip everything until the choices come up. I did some skipping but I have never clicked the wrong button or choice. I was on xbox 360 too for all games. I guess it just depends on the person.

I actually prefer game pads over mouse and keyboard for games like dragon age. Just more comfortable to me. So I'm glad the skipping feature is getting looked at.
