Why is the Warden "virtually certain"?
Because there is gameplay footage with him in it.

Cullen is also in the war room concept art. Granted, they said not all the people in the picture are companions, but there is still the possibility.
Leliana and the scribe girl were also in that concept art so that art can't be used to suggest who is or isn't a companion. At this point all of the available data points against Cullen being a companion. That's not a controversial or opinionated thing to say.
There is something I find a little odd though....
If Cullen wasn't a companion, I would have expected Bioware to have come out and said so by now - just to manage people's expectations.
The longer they wait and the more they allow the Cullen Hype to build... the bigger the letdown if they say he isn't.

I kind of feel like it may have been a mistake to say he was a LI and not say if he was a companion. I also feel like they should have said what genders the LIs would be for, though. I'm not sure what the benefits are of letting people get attached to a concept that might not be reality, but I guess I'm not in marketing. ![]()

They could be pulling an MSG2 and using his character model to hide Cullen before announcing him to much fanfare. Not saying it's likely, just saying it's possible.

I know, I said that not everyone in it is a companion. I was just pointing out the fact that Cullen is in concept art, and even though it is highly unlikely that he is a companion they haven't confirmed nor denied it so it's still up for debate. Probably not in this thread though
Why is the Warden "virtually certain"?
The gameplay footage with him in the party, for starters.
The entire blog post on armour customisation devoted to him and Cassandra two years ago is good evidence too.
But he's just been in too much stuff for me to ever believe he's not a companion. He's with other companions in concept art. He has his own piece of concept art that probably tells a pivotal part of his story.
He's probably the armoured figure in this piece of party art, to boot.
Nothing is a certainty until BW confirms it is so. Whether the rumoured Grey Warden or Cullen are companions or not remains to be seen. This is the twitter thread so I'd suggest people leave it at that and continue with the tweeting, OK guys?

It's also possible that we'll get a flying unicorn Nug companion who shoots rainbows, but some things are just so unlikely that there isn't really much point in using them as an argument.

You do realize that most people who are going to buy the game have no idea who Cullen is right? At this point, they haven't even shown him as being in the game either (we know here that he is but ouside people have no idea).
Basically, what Mike did was give a little something to the fans and nothing more.
I realize I'm probably not the first to say this, but how can Cullen be a companion if we've already got Cassandra, Iron Bull, and Grey Warden dude? It's possible Grey Warden dude is not a companion, but an even spread between 9 companions suggests 3 of each to me.
Maybe there will be important, prominent characters on our side that just aren't in the party? Maybe Cullen is that?

...just... I can't.

I'm just trying looking at it from a marketer's perspective, I have no personal preference one way or the other.
Cullen fans are a pretty vocal group and I wondered at the likelihood of stringing them along with the hopes that he's a companion only to pull the rug out from them down the line. To me, it would make more sense to manage those expectations now rather than continuing to let the hype/hope/misunderstandings build. That's all.

Whoopsie, wrong thread.

This. They promised nothing, except that he is an LI. His fans will be super disappointed if he isn't a companion as well.
I can understand why so many people don't understand why he's in DAI, or even DA2 for that matter, simply because if you didn't play as a mage in DAO you probably don't remember him and your like "WTF's a Cullen", but obviously if the Dragon Age team put him in ALL 3 games he has to have SOME important role to play.....on a similar topic I don't understand why so many people have been complaining recently about all the cameos of old characters...don't you want to see your old buddies and hug 'em...or see your old enemies and shank 'em? ![]()

that piece of art is unreal, wow
If their roles are pointless as Alistair in DA2, not really.I can understand why so many people don't understand why he's in DAI, or even DA2 for that matter, simply because if you didn't play as a mage in DAO you probably don't remember him and your like "WTF's a Cullen", but obviously if the Dragon Age team put him in ALL 3 games he has to have SOME important role to play.....on a similar topic I don't understand why so many people have been complaining recently about all the cameos of old characters...don't you want to see your old buddies and hug 'em...or see your old enemies and shank 'em?

That said, all the returning characters are supposed to have big role. Cullen has more content than in previous games, he's a LI and Ellis said Cullen's role is pretty big, Morrigan and Alistair are stated to have important roles, Varric is a companion.
I do agree that the whole Alistair thing in DA2 was garbage, but it still made me giggle :3
That being said I feel like the Dragon Age team learned their lesson on putting pointless and tasteless things into games, so I don't think they'll make the same mistake twice
